I mean, how well known is H. P. Lovecraft? I had no idea who he was until I researched him after seeing a bunch of shirts on this website. And I majored in Lit. Is the person in charge of picking the shirts a huge fan of his or something? I mean I like his work now that I know about it but hardly any other writers have designs show up o here.

I should probably google before I post this, but aren't the Arkham Horror board game and the Locke & Key comic based on his work? He has a big fan base.

They very well may. I still didn't know who he was. Those things are more recent? I watched a hour+ documentary about him on YouTube about him and recall hearing the term Arkham, it made me think of batman though he was earlier than natman. Then I recalled a question on Jeopardy about him. So I know he is out there and has influence a lot of things there haven't been any mainstream movies made of his work but has anything else been made?

Lovecraft is one of the most influential writers of horror and the supernatural of the 20th century. His somewhat florid style might not be to everyone's taste, but his tales of the Cthulhu Mythos have inspired several generations of horror writers (among them a young pup named Ramsey Campbell, whose first collection of stories - The Inhabitants of the Lake - was an unabashed homage to Lovecraft published when Campbell was still a teen). It was published by August Derleth at Arkham House, the press which Derleth founded to keep Lovecraft's stories and legacy alive, and which was hugely influential itself. Lovecraft is pretty much right up there with Poe in terms of influence on the weird tale. Go check out 'The Dunwich Horror', 'The Shadow Over Innsmouth', 'The Outsider', 'The Lurker on the Threshold', or 'Pickman's Model' to see what's what.

Arkham board game is indeed inspired by him, and even the name of the Batman asylum was supposed to be the same inspiration. I must say I've seen LOTR, Sherlock Holmes, Harry Potter, and many other works of written literary art as T-shirts on this site--I was also an English major--and honestly, was never asked to read any of those authors in my major either. If you look at the month (October) and the coming holiday (Halloween), there are a certain genre of authors and written work which might be celebrated during this time of year. Lovecraft is definitely one of them.

Not to mention Re-Animator, From Beyond and Call of the Cthulhu.

I agree with you there. As much as I know people love Lovecraft (a bit repetitive there!) and Tolkien, I'm kind of hoping people do a few more modern fantasy shirts! I guess there's just no quantifiable audience there, but I would totally buy a Rothfuss or Sanderson shirt in a heartbeat (if it was well-designed).

Neat design here, though! Just not sure it stands out against the rest of the Lovecraft shirts that have been put out. It's a bit less... unique. But then, there are a lot of folks who prefer subtlety, myself included, most of the time.
  • yourgirlyui said 25 weeks ago

As we are talking about how Lovecraft is known....
I came to his work thought a known german writer (Wolfgang Hohlbein). He did a big piece of work for the Cthulhu Mythos. Sadly it has never been translated to english ;(

Guillermo Del Toro has been trying to get the Mountains of Madness made into a movie for years.
If you've seen Hellboy, then you understand what an Elder God is (ie. the big tentacled bad at the end).
In the Mouth of Madness, the Re-Animator, and so many more movies are based around his work.
He literally is a genre of story-telling.
I hate to say (because I am a biased lover of this man's storytelling) but your school apparently is missing a chunk in its curriculum.

Read a book once and awhile. It will open you to many new and great things. Lovecraft is HUGE and many many horror movies are based off his works. They have a convention here where I live. I don't know half the anime stuff they have here but I don't show my ignorance.

In addition to what everyone else has said about his work, his visage is what makes up the World Fantasy Award.

There's no need to be rude about it... They said they majored in Lit, so I'm sure they read plenty of books. Doesn't mean someone knows about every author out there. I only know of Lovecraft because I play the game and I've read some of the comic.

Not a huge Lovecraft fan ,I like Poe better !!!!! But what I really want is for teefury to make T-shirts of this artist's side-art,especially the breaking bad and Sherlock Holmes Tshirts !!!!!!!!!!
  • bigbadbrad said 25 weeks ago

Ok, Lovecraft is cool and all but c'mon, lets get some variety in here. Lets bring out some real geeks.
Anyone up for a design depicting some of his work that's been woven into modern classics like ... like Reanimator, Die Monster Die!, or even Arkham Sanitarium.
Just saying, I think even the great Cthulhu can only take it so far
  • Dracu1a said 25 weeks ago

A very nice design, best one in weeks! It would have been nice to have more color options for the shirt.

I would like to see more Cthulhu based designs, like the baby Cthulhu from a year ago.

    Good work!

  • disembodied head said 25 weeks ago

I'm a huge fan of Lovecraft. I'd rank Lovecraft and Poe at the top for being the most inspirational and influential literary horror writers out there.

As for this design, doesn't really do anything for me personally but it's a good idea.

I would so love to see him get this done. At the Mountains of Madness is my favorite Lovecraft book.

I used to own a gaming and comic book store. We had a huge Lovecraft crowd and were lucky enough to be the testers for the Lovecraft card game Mythos.
  • bassistbrad said 25 weeks ago

How about an At the Mountains of Madness shirt? I'm a fan of Cthulu and all, but those are the only designs that ever come up! I'm a huge Lovecraft fan and I would love to see some of his other works inspire some shirts. The Dunwich Horror, the Outsider, and the Horror at Red Hook are a few suggestions
