I'm actually a bit disappointed of the huge difference that culture has gone through with the terms of being a "geek" or "nerd." When I was in grade school, I was made fun of for my nerdy interests, style and even having glasses. Now, everyone seems to trip over themselves for fake "geek" wear, so they can be "unique."

Well, I argue that being a nerd is still uncool. You still don't really want that label, unless you're calling yourself one. Geek is the positive word, and the one that Hollywood and the graphic tees fashion industry made chic. Nerd is still the negative one. But you're right about everyone suddenly wanting to be one, especially hipsters.

The only people who use the word "otaku" are otakus themselves, or actually Japanese. And even the Japanese use it as kind of an insult -- someone totally obsessed with something (manga/anime or anything else) to the point that they are awkward.
