Tell us a bit about this design.
I have always been fascinated with heraldry and Anglo-Saxon tradition; that and my own lineage, might I say, what with myself having been descended from the manor-born. As an ARTISTIC act, it is a new way to further the preservation of the old traditions and the aristocracy itself, for I believe that society runs more smoothly when an Establishment is firmly in place to deal with the day-to-day---- Aw geez. I was trying to strike the right balance between what one might actually find hanging somewhere in King's Landing, and what Arya Stark might have done to it in stealth, using the skills acquired from her dancing master and limited sewing techniques she had learned from her septa. And a Lion of Lannister in a Cone of Shame. I am hoping this happens in Book 7. FINGERS CROSSED.
Where realm are you from?
Originally? Really? Ooh geez. I am from Reno, Nevada. I live near Pasadena now, but soon Portland, Oregon likely. Not much to tell, other than I lived near Lake Tahoe but disliked skiing and snowboarding, and now I live in Southern California and I can't stand the beach or the heat. So naturally, the Pacific Northwest makes sense. Please tell me that it makes sense.
What do you want TeeFury fans to know about you?
I designed Blue Sun. THERE I SAID IT. *Takes hand off own horn*
What do you absolutely not want them to find out?
Out of the four variations of the Blue Sun design I submitted to the art director, we took them straight to Joss. Joss Whedon chose the only one I really didn't like. But we had no money, small staff, and even less time to create a full-sale sci-fi show. There was the Production Designer, Art Director, Set Designer, myself, an Art Department Coordinator, and an Illustrator for only the first three weeks of preproduction on the pilot, and that's it. I was really young and fresh, but I am proud of what five people accomplished in terms of designing the physical sets. Which also meant the Chinese just HAD to be mistranslated in the first couple of episodes in which it appeared, too, didn't it?! "Green Sky" I think is what we heard back from a Chinese native speaker at the network. Might as well have said "Murphy's Law". I absolutely don't want ANYONE to find that out EVER. I was lucky to be there at that moment. Why am I talking about this? I made a GAME OF THRONES shirt!!!
Name a few of your favorite things.
My wife, my dogs (FOUR!), Lego, Star Wars, TeeFury emails featuring exceptional art every day in my inbox, John R. R. Tolkien, George R. R. Martin, George "The Beatles" Martin, George and John and the other Beatles, virtually everything Chris McVeigh does, rain, cool weather, tacos, chocolate, beer. Why do I always answer this question like a sixth-grader? Speaking of which: Could you beat me in a challenge of rhetoric? Is it a good idea? SHOULD you challenge me to an argument of rhetoric? What are the possible outcomes? Is this a productive undertaking? No? Maybe?
What is your favorite thing about owning regal pets?
One of my dogs is a chihuahua-terrier mix. He looks like a Direwolf, a tiny Grey Wind. He chews on the bed spread every night and every morning. His name is Donkey and NO amount of shaming or discipline will keep him from gently rolling that IKEA bedspread in between his needle-like canines. He is a wild creature, and one would do well to give him ample clearance. "Your kibble is bloody tough!" my cat, GreatFalcor was once heard uttering, it's a true sto--DANG IT DONKEY!!! Don't hump the kitty!!! DONKEY!! TO ME!!!
Lion vs. Direwolf: which would win the battle?
Direwolf. Are you kidding me? Next to a Direwolf, a Lion of Lannister looks more like a DandyLion.
Describe your favorite shirt that you own, and why you like it so much.
I JUST BOUGHT "Dawn of Gaming" by Naolito. I love everything about it, especially the fact that seeing as it's the "Dawn of Gaming," gaming itself will not truly advance until DK can hit that START button... SO CLOSE!
Which is better, gaming, reading, or watching movies? Name your favorite title in your chosen medium.
Although I have been reading more lately, it's movies. Games are great, but I really only do the classics: Ms. Pac Man, Gauntlet, Star Wars Arcade, Tron, and the like. I don't have the time to invest in some of the great games out there, sadly. But as far as films go, the original version of The Empire Strikes Back would have to be my favorite of all time. No beginning, no end, and all extremely character-driven. And westerns. Sci-fi and westerns. I wish screen writers would read some Chekhov and figure out how to close some of those glaring plot-holes, man!
What inspires your work?
Deadlines! Other artists, and DEADLINES.
Any shout outs?
I already gave one to Chris McVeigh! So no double-shout-outs, okay Chris!!! Chris would be embarrassed because he's so cool and modest! So I won't mention Chris McVeigh again! No way! (Sup Chris!) I'd also like to mention Letter_Q's "Neverending Fight". I got it for my wife. It's exquisite. And everyone who has done Firefly work. Bamboota, John Sumrow, QueenMob, et al... SO. GOOD.
