Hi, straightforward question. I'm doing research on copyright and patents and in terms of some shirt designs where they take two (supposedly) copyrighted ideas and transform it into one idea, are you required to secure permission from the copyright holders or is there a loophole?

Thank you for any future reply.

Parody laws protect most daily sites from copyright infringement. The mashpotatoe designs take two unrelated intellectual properties and have them reference one another or a some unifying commonality making them fall into that gray area. There's been enough altered from the original that neither company can claim it as their own.

Now every daily site is guilty of blatant copy right infringement at one time or another, they choose their battles wisely. You'll see some sites avoid certain franchises all together after being called out on it. I've see clearly obvious parodies taken down on this site just to avoid the headache(I'm assuming here) of trying to defend the design legally.
