I think the characters are done well, but I don't get the reference haha.
Did you bitmap the cats or halftone them with a photoshop filter? If you're submitting it here (I'm not sure if they'd lean more towards using less colors or not) but I'd just shoot for using the full multiple shades of grey.

The cats themselves are vectors and they have halftone shading in black. There's only 5 colors if you don't count black, so if you did count it, isn't 6 colors still in the limit? You can tell which parts are the halftone and everything else is a full grey tone. As for the reference it's based on a Vogue magazine cover with a bunch of women actresses :).
