Your childhood memories sleep with the fishes!

Tell us about this design.
Growing up along the Gulf Coast, there were a ton of side-of-the-road, greasy spoon seafood restaurants, and they always had some sort of cheesy souvenir t-shirts of the "I got Crabs at Barnacle Bill's" variety. I thought it would be fun to take that sort of aesthetic and mix it up with a bunch of my favorite aquatically-based characters from a wide selection of modern culture.

How would you describe your style?

Wait, I have style? Did someone say that? Awesome!

What historical figure do you most admire?

I know most people probably say someone important like Abraham Lincoln or Ghandi. Maybe even Elvis. But I'm going to have to go with the guy who invented the cans of aerosol cheese (or "squeezy cheez" as I like to call it). This is a man who knew his market (people for whom opening the individual slices of American cheese was just too much work), knew what they wanted (to move as little as possible) and made their dreams come true, all while putting a little coin in his pocket.

If you weren't designing shirts, what would you be doing?

Before I got into t-shirt design, I worked for a film and video company as their lead editor / compositor and motion graphics artist, and was looking to get into independent movies, so chances are I'd still be working in that field. So yeah, either that or a SPACE NINJA!

Would you rather spend a weekend in a tent or an igloo?

Oh a tent, without a doubt. Tents speak of the enjoyment of the great outdoors, spending time with friends and fun weekends away from computers. Igloos seem like a way to separate a person from nature (by protecting them from it) rather than letting them enjoy what's around them.

Retro gaming vs modern gaming: which would win the battle?

There's no doubt that video games have come a looooong way in the past decades - with increasingly stunning graphics and immersive storylines - but our expectations have grown at the same rate. It takes more and more to impress us now, so that I think that the actual experience of playing good games remains very similar, whether it was Metroid in the 80's, GoldenEye in the 90's or Halo in the 00's.

What has been your favorite travel experience?

Between high school and college, I went to Ireland for 2 months to visit my best friend who I hadn't seen in several years. In addition to all of the normal sorts of shenanigans, we took two weeks and went on a car camping tour of the country, staying in a different campground each night and exploring the country from the Ring of Kerry to the Cliffs of Moher.

What is the strangest client request you've ever gotten? (from FuzzyLogic)

Like everyone else, I get lots of weird emails from all manner of people including startup companies, Asian manufacturers and kids with an inkjet printer who want to print out an iron-on of a design. One of my favorites though was this email: "you every thought about doing hip hop inspired themes" That was it. No name, no email address; just a vague and random question. So I just said "yes" to the air, hoping it would travel over the ether and into the ear of whoever send that email, but I never heard back. Which is a shame because I think I could have rocked that.

Your Polar Beer shirt was awesome! Do you intend to ever do any more lost themed T shirts? (from dippycow)

Now that the show has run its course, I thought the fever for LOST shirts might have died down, but I guess not? I do have ideas for a couple more LOST-inspired designs that I might still develop when I get the chance.

If you had one piece of advice to give aspiring artists fresh out of college, what would it be? (from trey_3d)

Learn everything that you can from anyone that's willing to teach you, even if it's not directly related to art. The skills and mental processes that you pick up can prove invaluable as you apply those disciplines to other areas of your life. I studied computer science for two years, and while it's been ages since I wrote a line of code, the problem solving skills I learned in programming help me on a regular basis as I tackle a new design challenge. Think of Daniel LaRusso (no, not an artist - The Karate Kid!) Wax on and wax off may not seem like important skills to know until you instinctively employ that knowledge when someone starts swinging at your face. It's the same way with art, though without the righteous headband.
