I must admit, I didn't like this at all until someone on facebook mentioned it's a quote from "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" by Edgar Allen Poe. Now I like the idea but dislike the execution. The art is great, but the style is wrong. It's like teaming up a smurf with a literary nerd.

(1) i would soooo buy the deer.
(2) the "ed hardy" reference was funny 'cause it's Ed Poe.
(3) disagree with FireCoral about the execution - i like the freshness brought to an "antiquity" of an idea.

Have to disagree with the grumps. This doesn't remind me of Hardy at all... and I think the style fits a Poe story very well. I especially like the details. The apple, the scissors, the heart... what else is there...? Love designs that make me dig deeper. ^_^

My daughter is a Poe fan and I'll have to think of getting this for her.

Aw, I was immediately disappointed to see text. Unless whatever it says is really clever or really funny, I'm not at all usually game.

It's a nice quote, but it doesn't speak anything to me. The design itself *is* quite beautiful, though. I personally had a hard time reading the text, but I don't know if that was just me or not.

Ireally, really like this. The quote is wonderful but the shirt is very... busy.

And where the heck are the models?? Especially with this much design going on I need to know where on my body it will be!! (Some things don't need to be accentuated).

Just a bit too complex for a t-shirt, in my opinion. People will stop and read it, or ask me about what it says/means. That would be annoying. Also it may be a bit bold to say, but having quotes appear in such a gaudy nature on a shirt to me is something that both tools and rednecks would do. Sorry.

However, I adore the lower two side-arts, as my issues with this shirt are echoed in the Neutral Milk Hotel one.

Not a buy for me. It's too hard to read. Not nearly as impossible as the sideart "milking" (I still haven't figured out what it says), but could be easier on the eye. On the other hand, it's a great pickup t-shirt. Just come near a hot chick and wait until you grab her attention and she snaps "what does your tee say?"

Beautiful quote and detail, but I don't like shirts that a person has to stare at to understand. It's like, Hey, awkwardly stare around my boobs to read this. Maybe it's different for guys. The colors are great against the black and the details are cool, but this is a no-go for me.

I might be wrong here, because this is not my main language, but when I get this right, fervor is british english, which should be correct when quoting Poe. Fervour is the american english version. I for myself would also prefer the correct quote.

Okay people, this is a type of an artistic design which has been adopted by the culture of America to despise; for the sole purpose to make fun of certain forms of entertainment. If you could read the elegant phrase, you would not find that it has been endorsed by the league of martial artists, nor the cast of the shore; it is by Edgar Allan Poe. Some of you would need to get a life and ignore certain atrocities that are appearing in television. Even though, I have not read "The Murders in the Rue Morgue", I love the use of the apple, the heart, and the scissors because it adds a little mystery; for it is best not to know. I applaud Karl Kwasny for using this popular motif for his illustration. Have you visited his website? Original ideas plague that page, my friends.

I dig the filigree, apple, heart and scissors.
It is beautifully detailed. I just am not fond of
the type of shirts it reminds me of. Infection, TapOuch, , Rage Fighter, Hospitality, etc.. :o)

It would be fun to market towards this crowd and see how many could get to buy the shirt that had no idea what Poe was and somehow, be a fly on the wall when someone would come up to them and say "Woah! I had no idea you were into E.A.P.!" and hear the reply "What? Yeah... he's a bad arse MMA fighter, huh!?" *grin*

There is not a single Ed Hardy design that looks anything like this or is even reminiscent. Ed Hardy designs have massive
pieces of his tattoo flash art as aprox. 80% of the piece with sometimes then having a tattoo banner across or around it.
Just sayin'. Not a fan of Ed Hardy either. ;-)

While text-centric shirts just aren't my style, I have to say that after checking out your gallery online, I've really fallen in love with your work. You have a great way with suggesting form in contour lines, and faint hints of color. The pages from your journal really hit me too, as I'm going through some of that stuff right now and it's illustrated pretty much perfectly how I feel. So thanks. While it's true that lines like Affliction and Ed Hardy have championed the "more is more" aesthetic, that doesn't mean that they have the copyright on highly detailed designs. And in fact, the carefully thought out and excellently rendered work here feels like a solid rebuttal to those designs that are all overcomplicated flash but no substance.

Oh Edgar, how I adore thee. So I have to get this, even though I know people will think I'm wearing gangsta art.

I love the nod to literature and intellect. It's an odd quote to take from the story, although beautifully written.

Wow, oh, wow would I EVER love a raven tee in this style; "quoth the raven nevermore". My heart is all a flutter just picturing it.

Both are correct. "Fervor" is the American spelling, "Fervour" is the British spelling. I've seen both used with this Poe story, so he's not wrong ^_^

What's a day in the life of Karl like?
I wake up and then I draw. It's not very interesting.

Why are you an aritst?
I get a lot of satisfaction out of making things. Also, I think that making things is the purest form of ownership. That's not supposed to sound pretentious!

It looks like you might have a book coming out? "One illustration per week for two years"... Can you tell us about that?
Yeah! Well, I really want to force myself to produce more personal work. My job is drawing pictures for other people, so I often don't have any motivation to do personal stuff. If, however, I'm working towards some grand project I'm far more likely to do it.

You've been working as an artist for long time. Can you tell us when you started, and how it was back then?
Not that long! I've only been doing this for money for three years. It's a huge struggle when you're starting out and it's very disheartening.

What was your first printed commercial piece of artwork?
I think it was a t-shirt print for Mooks.

What's in the future?
Chrome with the desert reflected in it/hovering/nuclear war.

What other interests do have?
I play music, too, but let's not go into that.

What inspires you?
I don't know.

If you could go only to one restaurant for the next five years, which would it be?
Is it a single restaurant that I am forced to go to for every meal, or can it be a chain of restaurants? It'd probably be better to choose a chain with locations in the greatest number of countries to afford more travel options. Also, is someone paying for my meals or am I forced to pay? If someone is paying, I suppose my answer would be the restaurant with the greatest number of locations and the highest price per meal.

What advice would you offer to aspiring designers?
DON'T get discouraged by people not replying to emails or returning your calls. When I was starting out I would send maybe ten emails per day to companies I'd like to work for and very very few would even respond. As cliche as it sounds, don't give up. You just have to keep trying despite all the rejection.
