I saw some really neat “Kick-ass-girls” designs on various web pages and decided to rework the classic “damsel in distress fairy tale” of Little Red Riding Hood. The designs is meant to be a simple, narrative and moody scene – since my origins lie in animation and comics, I am much better at this than in creating punch lines.
Where are you from?
I am from Graz in Austria, a really neat city which I recommend everyone to visit. It’s much cooler than Salzburg and Vienna, I swear! And it has a giant hill in the middle, which the devil has supposedly dropped there. And no, the tourism office doesn’t pay me to say that! I really love my city. Currently I am living in my second favorite city, New York.
What do you want TeeFury fans to know about you?
I am a nerd. I read comics, I draw them, I know that a dice can have up to a 100 sides, quote Monthy Pythons, Futurama and Ren and Stimpy on any given occasion and sometimes disappear for a whole day to play a video game. I can even sing the pirate song from Monkey Island 3.
What do you absolutely not want them to find out?
That I use my “career” as an excuse for still being single. Oh, and that my secret weakness is ice cream by Ben&Jerry. I also didn’t like the new Battlestar series all that much and I hated the ending of Lost. Please don’t hate me!
Name a few of your favorite things.
Playing a darn good pen and paper RPG with friends!
Dreaming, preferably lucid (I swear, two of my dreams had end credits so far!)
Anything that somehow includes the Monty Pythons.
Space, with all its nebulas, planets, black holes and the way it confronts me with being really tiny.
Cats that are cute (which is almost all of them)
What are your feelings about the 80s?
When I think about the 80ies, all I can think about is Night Rider! David Hasselhoff at his best! Remember when he talked to his watch and people thought he was crazy? Or when he activated the Turbo Boost?! Also, all the animation series that were only shown in Europe: “Wiki und die starken Männer”, “Die Biene Maya” or “Alfred J. Quack”. Sorry, US-citizens, you won’t know those!
Would you rather be stranded on a desert island or a distant planet?
On a distant planet, of course! I don’t want some smokey monster to kill me and stuff. Distant planets promise much more interesting activities; Worshipping great old ones, finding all the missing left socks, meeting hot space dudes, eating space ice cream (Spice-cream!) and maybe fighting for the future of the universe.
Dinosaurs vs. time travellers: which would win the battle?
Time travelers just need to travel to a key moment of dinosaur evolution and step on whatever comes out of the pond (we know that from Futurama or the Simpsons), but on the other hand, “life always finds a way”, right. SO in an actual battle, I say the dinosaurs win, as long as they have laser beam eyes and explosives strapped to them. And, of course, Kamikaze Pterodactyls would make all the difference.
Describe your favorite shirt that you own, and why you like it so much.
It’s Monkey Business by Alex Solis. I love that it shows a monkey in a Mafia costume, it only has two colors and simply looks bad ass. One of my first ideas for a shirt was a Mafia monkey. But he did it first, and he did a great job. I love how the figure melts with the black background, and how evil that monkey looks at you! Also, I need to mention that Mel Gibson shirt you guys posted a while ago on facebook by Tom Ledin (“You are a pain in my ass – stop being that”) – maybe it’s been printed here when my interview is published, but for me it’s a sure buy.
Which is better, gaming, reading, or watching movies? Name your favorite title in your chosen medium.
Oh man, do I really need to decide? I love all of it – movies for not having to do anything, reading for the ability to carry a “pocket-universe” with you anywhere you go and gaming for the interactivity. But if I had to decide, I would say I love gaming the most, because it enables you to take part in a story (depending on the game of course). My favorite titles are the Monkey Island series and the Half Life games in the computer game field and indie games such as Fortune’s Fool (Pantheon Press) and RISUS by John Ross in the pen and paper sector.
What inspires your work?
Besides a ton of illustrators and comic creators such as Moebius, Lewis Trondheim, James Jean, Claire Wendling, writers such as Garth Ennis, Grand Morrison, Neil Gaiman, China Mieville and Warren Ellis, painters such as Brueghel, Caravaggio, William Turner and Van Gogh, it’s good stories. I love to listen to fantastic stories, true or fictional, as long as my interest is awakened. My favorite must be mythical stories, involving magic of some sort, urban landscapes and interesting characters. Almost all of my designs are based on a narrative. Also, traditional animation plays an important part for me; such as Samurai Jack, Secret of Kells or Miyazaki movies.
