Hear Evil, See Evil, Speak Evil
About the artistArt curated by
A word from the curator:
Monkey business is just a bit evil, it seems!
Tell us about this design.
A few years ago I went to the Tōshō-gū shrine in Nikkō, Japan where the three wise monkeys originates. The original says 'see no evil, hear no evil speak no evil'. However, the reality is that everyday when we watch TV, look on the Internet, walk down the street we 'see evil, hear evil and speak evil'. This does not necessarily mean we are evil, but rather, that we now live in a society where our eyes are open because we have access to information like never before. Hence the design.
Where are you from?
Melbourne Australia - has had its fair dose of popularised evil in the past - enough gangland drug wars to sink a ship! Apart from that, it really is a great place!
How did you get started designing t-shirts?
When I was the tender age of twelve, I made my first t-shirt using black permanent markers on a white t-shirt. It was a collage of my favourite band logos and artwork from their album (yes that's right album) covers. This was the 80s man!!
What advice would you offer to aspiring designers?
Concept is key.
What would be your dream job?
Certified Bum / Millionaire. No work, all play!!
What are your feelings about unicorns?
Dangerous rodeo addition. Clowns would have great trouble avoiding that thing!!
What would your dream house be like?
Industrial!! Massive open plan area smack bang in the middle of the city. Industrial fan in the wall turning slowly like the Gerry Springer show. Massive art studio - hooked up!!
Comedy vs. tragedy: which would win the battle?
Depends on the plot. Sometimes there is no joke upon reflection of a 'situation' but then, 99 percent of time there is. so I'm going with the odds - Comedy!!
Describe your favorite shirt that you own, and why you like it so much.
Well, now that I have reminisced about the first t-shirt I ever made, I'm going to say that one!!
What was your favorite as a kid: comics, cartoons, or movies? Was there a specific title you liked most of all?
Asterix, ET or the Smurfs??? I can't decide what I liked the most...
What are a few of your favorite websites?
delicious.com, vi.sualize.us, urbandictionary.com
Any shout outs?
To my beautiful partner Vicky. We are having a baby boy due October 3rd!!
