Words from the curator:
Another eco-friendly message brought to you by Teefury superstar, wotto!
When did you realize you wanted to fully pursue art as a career?
When my babysitter taught me how to draw cartoon characters. I decided then I wanted to do it forever. My whole life has been driven since that moment. I wanted to draw and make a living out of it. It was a dream and only recently has it really started to work for me, many years later.
Did you have formal training in school?
Yes I went to a high school like everyone else but I doodled through all of my classes and only really paid attention to my art teachers. They were a huge inspiration to me. Next I went to Art School and then University to do a degree in illustration. It was good and I learned a lot but the social side of student life was a huge pull. I'm not fully convinced you can't self teach these days, the internet has some incredible tutorials.
What are some of your favorite colors to use in a palette?
Black, white and red I love. Simple and striking but I don't get too many chances to use it. I also like dirty looking colours in my illustration. I am trying to brighten things up but I always slide back into the colours I know and love.
What is the most unusual influence for your work? Whether it's an unlikely artist, musician, or inanimate object.
Hummm that's hard for me to answer. Obscure things influence me all the time, I seem to see things in the strangest of places. I read a story about the bald eagle recently that blew my head off, so I imagine one of those might appear soon. I have a lot of junk laying around my desk that influences me, random shapes and objects. Music plays a large part in what my work turns out like too. Right now I am listening to "Susan's House" by the eels that always makes me want to draw crazy stuff. My art is often an adventure and even I don't always know where it will end, It's worrying really.
