Tell us about yourself:
My name is Marques Cannon, I'm a Ringling School of Art & Design graduate (Illustration major) living in Sarasota, FL. I play a lot of video games, read a lot of comics, and know way more about various nerdy subjects than anyone ever should. I also create music under the name I KILL PXLS (ikillpxls.com).
What do you do for a living?
I work at a small local sign company doing most of their design work. I do some freelance tshirt design on the side as well.
Do you own alot of shirts? If so, what's your favorite?
I own a ridiculous amount of shirts but I can never get enough. My favorite at the moment is one by Mr Rocks. The art on that is good enough to be a tattoo.
What's your art process like, from initial sketch to finished product?
I usually get an idea in my head first. Then I sketch out a basic composition out on paper while getting any reference material I may need (like in this case, pictures of T-rexes and various kinds of heavy armory). Then I draw and ink the final linework on paper, scan it in to Adobe Photoshop, and clean it up there. After that, if I'm dealing with a tshirt design, I bring it in to Adobe Illustrator, vectorize everything, add color, and I'm done.
If you had $25,875 to spend, what would you do with it?
I'd probably use a lot of it to get my music professionally recorded, mixed, and manufactured. I have a new album worth of material that I'm working on at the moment but I really want to make it sound as professional as possible. The rest I would use to pay off my student loans haha.
What advice would you offer to aspiring designers?
Try to push your own boundaries by trying out as many different styles as possible. Diversity is an excellent skill to have. Don't ever waste your talent since there are people out there dying to have an ounce of your ability. Don't ever take that ability for granted.
MAC or PC?
I've always preferred PCs since I can build them, I know my way around them, and I can customize them if I want to. My family's first computer was an IBM that only ran DOS so I'm not afraid to get in to the guts. It used to be that Macs were better for design purposes but these days there's no significant difference between the two.
What are a few of your favorite websites?
I visit a lot of blogs. Destructoid and Kotaku for video games, iO9 for my nerdy sci-fi fix, Penned Madness and Trash Menagerie to find new music. I lurk around the NeoGAF forums a lot as well.
Any shout outs?
