Like like like! I kinda agree that it leaves a lot of empty space on the tshirt.. Want to buy but not sure, well I have the whole day to think about it!
nice and simple but executed perfectly. i love how the teacup isn't just a plain old white cup but apart of the wave/painting as well. Just wish it wasn't smack-dap center of the shirt. kinda empty feeling compared to the original.
I decided I would hate myself if i didn't buy it. So, Bought!Oh, and I found the print which I will also be buying sometime in the future for my kitchen :)
It pains me how good this shirt is, but I feel like its just not doing what it could be doing, surf board table..... something to fill that space ARG
the guy took the time n' all its there in the work, its just not filling up the shirt : / hell a life raft donut with this n a surfboard counter/ something.

Love big siblings... nicely done on that... but what about a tee fury tee... with the evil bird and the other bird... that would sell like hotcakes... so designers or whatever please get to that awesome future could be shirt that i would so buy and wear lol
i agree that there is no need to fill all of the space on the shirt, and the colors are grand.
the only thing that would make this a buy for me is different placement of the cup possibly, like near the bottom of the shirt possibly.
this is still a very nice design tho, congrats :]
i like it but i think that the Mona Lisa and Security Camera side art is way better. This shirt is just lacking something. The design barely covers the shirt and it just seems odd to me.

You can have your very own Mona Lisa, or any other picture for that matter, in the same art form.
What happened to the misplaced-themed shirts on Tuesdays anyway? Not that I want to own 846 misplaced shirts, but WWJLD and Smokey protecting the island were definitely awesome...looking forward to the Desmond "Brother" (Constant is good, Brother is better) and Hurley "Dude" shirts in the Fairey Barack illustration style that was on the side when WWJLD was released.
Um, I don't know why the word L.O.S.T. was replaced by "misplaced", but ok. Also meant to add that the illustration of Desmond would in my opinion be enhanced by him with his beard rather than clean shaven. Geez, O.B.A.M.A. was also replaced with Barack...is big brother on TeeFury???
I LOVE THIS. I will absolutely be purchasing this no questions asked!
The design is perfectly sized, rendered, and does a great job giving a proper nod to Hokusai. Perfection!
If I didnt just buy Tragically hips Coffee girl shirt with a coffee cup on the front, on a saucer then I might be down!!
ahhhh, such a sucker for anything asian and anything awesome! this hit both right on the head. bought!
and i am wearing the coffee one you are talking about actually right this moment, still bought both!
I don't agree that this needs to fill the shirt. There are far too many that fill the shirt and end up looking cheap and tacky. This actually looks cool in this minimalist format.
Love this (and I love Mona Lisa and would totally buy that too... depending on what it looks like of the shirt, of course :)
This made me smile! I love the original artwork, and this is a fun spinoff. Definite buy; it's been too long since I've seen something on teefury jump out and grab me like this one!
I often(everyday) wear button-up overshirts with my tees, so I like graphics of this size and placement so people can still see it beneath the button-up. That said, this is a gorgeous design and I would never have thought it was a TeeFury-printed piece. It's really good stuff. I'm in for 2.
I think this is awesome! I love how it's the Asian art inspired style wave. On the zoomed in version at the bottom, you can really see the edges and stuff of the cup and I like that. :)
As for the side art, I absolutely *LOVE* the 1st one. BIG BROTHER!
the art is beautiful, but it's not a "me" shirt. Congrats on the printing, and i really wish this was a shirt that i could say i would wear because i would buy in a heartbeat if it was. No offense meant to the artist, as i love the simplicity of it. I will be buying the print for my apt, though.

I'm on the fence about buying it but I really really like the concept and the execution. You see "the waves" referenced in a lot of places and I haven't seen it done like this before. Yay for that!
Tell us about this design:
I'd been wanting to do something with Hokusai's waves for a long time but hadn't been able to come up with a decent concept. I finally sat down to seriously think about it and it all came together pretty quickly.
You guys asking for the design to fill the cup are incredibly dense.
The design size is perfect for what it is...a storm in a TEACUP...
Let me be blunt, how big is a teacup?? Its small yes?? Well the purpose of this design is to show its absurdity of having a storm within a small teacup...Would it be as effective if the teacup took up the entire shirt as you are suggesting??? ummmm no
On a side note, I listened to some of your music, and I like that, too! It's sort of a Vampire Weekend/Dr. Dog/New Pornographers mix, with your own thing going on, too. If I had a million-dollar recording contract, you'd get it.
That's quite the design. The metaphorical aspects of the shirt bring out the complex reality of life. In the simplest, most basic existences we can find the violent and chaotic truth. Life, like the water is formless and limitless, and yet it is a power force beyond measure. To contain this emergence, capture it, truly capture it in simplicity, is indeed powerful. Although weather may be the concept presented here through use of Hokusai's "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" , it truly is a metaphor for the nature and chaos contained within that which is civilized and man-made. Bravo.
On a different note, I feel the need to play D(te)evil's ;) Advocate for a second here...

I honestly don't believe that Teefury *purposefully* picks/prints designs they think their site's audience is going to dislike.
Part of it's going to be each curator's personal preference, in which case, you're totally allowed to not be a fan of someone's taste in designs, but that's just the way things are in life. Everyone isn't always going to like the exact same things. That's the beauty of there being a *NEW* design every day!
On that same note, 1/2 the people here complain when there's a [insert pop bacteria icon/reference here] spoofalicious design, but guess what? The other 1/2 are saying, "Whoo! I
But most importantly, when you've got to put up a new design every day, and you only have the submitted designs that you have... It's always going to be a judgment call, and you try to do the best you can w/ what you've been given.
Looking at yesterday's shirt, jimiyo had a design for sale, which, even though it wasn't my particular style, was a stunningly executed design, and that's what gives me faith that these guys know what they're doing. Because regardless of whether their particular style is your cup of tea, they're all still phenomenal artists.
I just get really tired of people accusing Teefury of not holding themselves to high standards. I think they do hold themselves to high standards, and that's a completely different matter from whether or not their audience feels that those standards have been met for that particular day. In the overall history of this site, if you felt like Teefury consistently selected poor designs, would you really still be coming back here every day?
And really, if *every single day* there was a shirt that you thought was fantastic, you'd either go really broke really quick, or just be constantly frustrated that there were these amazing tees you wanted to own, but couldn't because you couldn't afford it!
My very long-winded ;P point is, you're totally entitled to not like the design for the day, and you're totally entitled to talk about why you don't like that particular design, and you're totally entitled to think that the people running the site don't know what they're doing, but if that's the case, you're also totally entitled to go somewhere else.
So, Teefury, even though I'm obviously not buying every single day's tee, I definitely own a decent amount of them, and it's as much due to the skill of the designers as it is to your guys' ability to recognize the skill of those designers as well. So as far as I'm concerned, keep on doin' what you're doin', 'cause even though I've never bought, or barely even visited, anything from any other t-shirt sites, you've had me hooked on your site for over a year now. =)

awesome simple shirt. i like the minimalist design and the color choices. makes me think of the RHCP song on stadium arcadium. i purchased one. please print more of this artist.
a tee with tea!
i love "the great wave", so this was not a hard decision for me.
and i just remembered i have a pair of vans that will match with it perfectly.
keep up the good work. i definitely will buy more shirts like this.
I have to say, if I were to draw something along the same lines as what comes on every apple computer as a desktop, I would not have kept the same image... I agree with joshamman, its one thing to have a great idea (aka tea cup with tsunami waves coming out of the cup) but its another to cut and paste almost image for image. Great idea though, just not very personalized
mleff@pobox.com said: The design is a perfect size. The "Sponge Bath" shirt from a couple weeks ago wraps around my boobs and you can't see the whole design.
^^ exactly how i feel! a lot of the designs wrap around, or cut off because of mine, and it's the perfect size design! i am quite happy with the size! :)
But I dont get it. I thought that the tees available on teefury are available for 24h exclusively, only, and no other place than teefury, because this is what makes this place so special. 2. The design's merit is not in the artist's ability to cut and paste a famous drawing of a wave and render a teacup, but in the matching of the two concepts into a cohesive idea.

I was looking at the original design by Hokusai and this design. It seems that the artist was intentionally trying to mimic the style but I think that he didn't just copy and paste the waves. They look subtly different but similar enough that you get the idea. I think it is a marvelous design and I love how there is a large wave coming out of a teacup. I also think that the size of the design is perfect, its not overpowering. And since when has it become "plagiarism" when an artist is *gasp* inspired by another artist? People need to chill.
I love the concept of the tsunami in the teacup,
it's like the human spirit in a body. Also culturally, I've always loved the style,
and the art, and well, it's the power of the ocean... what more can ya say?
Everything about the design is awesome.
Lastwill said: Bought it, Now I will be pissed if tomorrow's shirt is even better because I just used my funds up.
Follow Teefury on Facebook and you get a 30 minute preview of the next days shirt. Perfect for those people that must buy a shirt then and now but worried the next days might be better.
Tell us about this design: I'd been wanting to do something with Hokusai's waves for a long time but hadn't been able to come up with a decent concept. I finally sat down to seriously think about it and it all came together pretty quickly.
What's a day in the life of Ross like? At the moment very lazy. I've moved cities and am in the process of setting up as a freelance designer. As such I'm not rushed off my feet which is nice as it gives me time to catch up on some training, do some art and get back in to playing the piano.
Do you own alot of shirts? If so, what's your favorite? I own a ridiculous amount of shirts which is actually very handy if I don't get around to doing the washing for a while. My favourite shirt is by a Melbourne designer called Mike Hepburn and it's called "Big Fat Robot Has A Victim"
What advice would you offer to aspiring designers? Plug yourself into the collective consciousness as much as you can. Fill your head with pop culture and 'high art' and enjoy what comes out of the mix. On a more practical level, have an idea before you fire up the computer - a rough sketch or a series of thoughts, otherwise time will end up disappearing rather quickly.
What's been your most successful design? It would have to be "CCTV Government" which was featured on BoingBoing a little while ago. I think it just happened to be the right idea at the right time, particularly in the UK which has more CCTV cameras per capita than any country in the world.
MAC or PC? Oh definitely Mac. Without a doubt. Using Windows makes my brain feel like a thousand ants are biting it from the inside. I can't be the only one who feels like that can I? Surely not.
Do you have any interesting hobbies or tales of intrigue? Do tell! I wish I did have tales of intrigue. It would mean my life is more interesting than it seems. I do use a false name to send bizarre, nonsensical letters to companies asking weird things about their products but as yet haven't received any replies. I am a frustrated musician. And by frustrated I mean no record company executive has recognised my latent innate talent and handed me a million dollar recording contract. I do have a few songs people can listen to online: http://www.macjams.com/artist/Myshkin
just in case they know any record company executives...
Any shout outs? Please check out the work of RubyRed, Scott Robinson and Caanan, all of whom are here on TeeFury and all of whom are ridiculously talented (and wonderful people to boot!). Also check out the online comic "The Plastic Age" drawn by my friend Rhys McDonald

^^ exactly how i feel! a lot of the designs wrap around, or cut off because of mine, and it's the perfect size design! i am quite happy with the size! :)

I was wondering the same thing:
"I know you can straddle the atmosphere
A tiny storm in your teacup girl
I know you can battle the masses, dear
A tiny storm in your teacup girl"

"never to be made available for sale again (at least through teefury.com - artists retain full rights to their artwork and may choose to make the piece available at a future date)."
It's in our FAQ

I was looking at the original design by Hokusai and this design. It seems that the artist was intentionally trying to mimic the style but I think that he didn't just copy and paste the waves. They look subtly different but similar enough that you get the idea. I think it is a marvelous design and I love how there is a large wave coming out of a teacup. I also think that the size of the design is perfect, its not overpowering. And since when has it become "plagiarism" when an artist is *gasp* inspired by another artist? People need to chill.
Congrats on the print. A fantastic design.

Very first thing I thought too, even without reading the title...after reading the title, it's kind of obvious

it's like the human spirit in a body. Also culturally, I've always loved the style,
and the art, and well, it's the power of the ocean... what more can ya say?
Everything about the design is awesome.
