Yay for my first post on this site since joining! Hi all! Anyway, I'm really enjoying the colors in this design. I'm a big fan of green anyway so I'm attracted to it just based on the color. XD but I do like the take on what's a very classic picture. I wiiiiish I could have gotten the robot with the butterfly though, that shirt is just...me.

the robot/butterfly shirt is a highly successful design found at uneetee:

Without being told so, I would not be have known they were zombies. And I agree with Emily47, especially since others will not necessarily know they were zombies also.
Very well done, I love your style! The line work is solid, and the texture of the background gives the image great depth.
However, I too am feeling like the IwoJima thing is reasonably disrespectful :/ I get where you're coming from but I'm def not the kinda girl to be ok with the imagery used in this context, more like the kind to be found sitting in peace at a memorial, taking photos or just kinda meditating...
This is one of those tshirts / art pieces where not having been informed of the title of the piece I'm not sure whether I would have understood its concept as much...
Am I an insensitive butthead because I don't look at that image and think "OOOOh, Iwo Jima or 9/11 or Racially Diverse 9/11 statue based on the 9/11 photo"? I see it as an iconic image of several people putting up a flag. And I firmly believe that anything iconic is required to be parodied at least once. So people need to stop being so sensitive... PARODY IS FUN! :-)
Anyhoo. I like the concept, but to me it's a bit hard to tell they are zombies (in the shirt mock-up) without being told. I'm not sure if shading, as opposed to the silhouette, could have helped that.
It kind of looks like a random zombie is attacking the soldiers who put the flag up. The borders look like a whole bunch of other zombies are incoming.
Reminds me of Left 4 Dead, which reminds me... need to save up for the release of L4D2 for the fiance :)
To those who are butthurt over the parody, get over it, its not necessarily a "parody" but just a twist on an iconic image that most of the people who visit this site love. TF is good with the parodies, TF is good with Zombies. So why not a Zombie Parody?
great great idea, and good design. the one thing i would say though is that i think it would be cool if the zombie effect was a little more prominent, at a glance i think it looks like a design simply based on iwo jima, rather than a soon to be BRAIN FEAST!!
How can people not tell that they're zombies? They're all ripped up and falling apart. Theres hands reaching out from the border and the zombie on the left has his arms stretched out, hungry for brains. Bought.
You can't tell they're zombies at one glance, cos at a shirt chest size, it's almost humanlike, but I lvoe the contrast and colours in this. THe choice of green is lovely. Has that eerie feel don't it?
Definitely one I would wear.. if I had the $$$. ; /
I have to disagree with some of the folks on here. It's a take on a specific photo. It isn't like the artist is making a parody of the holocaust, the a-bomb, or anything like that.
I just can't connect the iwo jima image with zombies. Why would they be hoisting a flag? I wouldn't think they would give a Cinderella about a flag- Now if it was brains on top of the pole, I can see them clamouring for it.
Other than not getting the connection between the two, I do love the image itself- awesome palette, and really nice line work.
Sorry, but I, too, find this design to be poorly thought and in extremely bad taste. It struck me the wrong way, the moment I saw it. The style and the colors are striking, but the subject material is waaaaaaay out-of-line.

Okay I would like all of you who are slamming this tee shirt as insensitive to take a quick second and think about this.
My grandfather (who is 96 this year I believe and is still living on his own) fought in the Iwo Zima Campaign. To this day he is reluctant to talk about specifically what role he played on that island. War is a terrible thing, and no photograph can ever truly represent the sacrifices these brave men made on that island. Many a good man died during the campaign, both American and Japanese. The photograph which this work is based off of is actually a photo of the second flag being put up. It is a very iconic photograph indeed, however it is just that, a photograph. My grandfather has indicated this himself. It gained notoriety because for many it represented American success in the war, and it was eventually used to drive bonds for the war. The true irony is that the image has been exploited for decades since in the form of commemorative plates, coins, and other For Profit Ventures. The true disrespect is how so many business men have used this photo to pull at our wallets convincing us that shelling out money to them is a form of patriotism. I would argue that a parody of which is not so much a disrespect to the photo as a tribute to it, a new twist on a classic icon. I enjoy that someone has taken a the idea in a new direction, rather than redo what has been done so many times before. This parody does not disrespect the soldiers: a disrespectful parody would be one that would portray the men involved in the campaign in a negative light. This work says nothing pro or negative of the brave men who fought for our freedom, It merely mimics a classic photo that came as a result of many a heroic action.
And regardless of whether you are for or against this shirt, I urge you, rather than try to argue about how wrong or right it is to parody this photograph, make a real difference. Go spend time with a war veteran. Thank then for the sacrifices they have made for this country. Show them that you really do care. Any personal thanks that you give will have a far greater positive impact.
mostly_harmless_mike makes a very good point. My GFather was also in the war and spending time with him is so damned refreshing. The younger kids forget what SleepingBeauty these people went through to give them what they have today. Damned pesky kids.
Uh, a huge number of Americans and Japanese died on Iwo Zima. To suggest "What better way to celebrate an unforgettable and undying image than to use the undead to keep it alive!" is appalling. With respect, that's how you keep such an image alive. geeze.
My dad was in the Pacific Campaign in WWII as well. They died for us. "This parody does not disrespect the soldiers: a disrespectful parody would be one that would portray the men involved in the campaign in a negative light." For example...portraying them as mindless zombies.
Josephus said: My dad was in the Pacific Campaign in WWII as well. They died for us. "This parody does not disrespect the soldiers: a disrespectful parody would be one that would portray the men involved in the campaign in a negative light." For example...portraying them as mindless zombies.
How exactly does this portray THEM specifically as mindless zombies. The essential flaw with your argument is that you are making the assumption that the figures are representing the soldiers themselves. Aside from the copying of the pose I see little that would indicate that these are the men who actually raised the flag its self. Now if the image was more like this http://www.foundSleepingBeauty.com/oil-rig-raising/ i would agree with you. However similarities in poses does not constitute it being the same people, or even soldiers for that matter. Hence, saying that this artwork portrays the men who raised the flag as "mindless zombies" is simply a overreached connection.
"saying that this artwork portrays the men who raised the flag as "mindless zombies" is simply a overreached connection."
riiiight. The zombies in the picture ARE raising the flag itself. If not for the one on the far left and the hands randomly sticking up, you wouldn't really be able to tell that they are zombies. You can tell that they are raising the flag, in a way very similar to the soldiers in the Pulitzer Prize-winning photo. This image is designed to evoke Iwo Zima. The designer even says so.
I'm not sure what's all the fuss about these past however many shirts being halloween themed...if it were up to me, the halloween theme would've started at the beginning of the month! hah

I get where you're coming from, but I'm with mike on this one- I see it as a moment in time from a future dystopia, not a statement on the events of the past. The allusion is to the strength and boldness displayed by those soldiers, and (maybe most importantly) how the sight of that flag affected their enemies, imo. That flag meant they were winning, even in the face of some seriously rough odds.

I'm completely frustrated by this thing. I think it is a wonderful design, and I want it. a lot. But I, at the very same time, can't get past the huge influence of the history of that image. So many people died, on both sides. Saying that it is meant to be a future dystopia peopled by zombies isn't convincing to me. The raising of the flag on Iwo Jima was a seminal event in the battle and ultimately an icon of the war for the Pacific. I'd ask my dad about it, but he'd either agree that the image is OK, or he'd agree that it isn't. I have no idea which, nor does it matter because it would almost certainly be a lie designed to avoid having to talk about that period.
and I think that's the difference here. The Obama picture is just a harmless poke in fun at a sitting President, using an image that he pretty happily exploited himself on his way to election. That image was also photoshopped from the original, so you aren't even parodying the original. In this case, we're looking at a Pulitzer Prize-winning photo taken five days into a 35 day battle in which there were close to 50,000 casualties (total).
I got it on a Woot shirt recently and had to look it up. It's the opposite of Utopia.
I went to Mexico once. I thought I got the same thing from there. Didn't know you could order it from Woot.
I'm so angry that this shirt isn't white, and it's not a Darth Vader shirt!
Did you bring back Swine Flu? It was a random woot shirt. Although if they did offer it for sale it would probably crash their servers. Woot servers are made out of Popsicle sticks.
Somehow there needs to be a shirt on here that's white and black and features skulls, animals, and Star Wars.
Oh and Jimi way to kill a sale for Winterartwork by making the tiger getting punched by a boxing glove on Burgunday. I would've bought it from crappy DBH if it was on white. :P
Excellent Shirt, love the black and green contrast.. almost mystical! People need to lighten up getting all pc on this shirt..it's a freakin shirt.. Keep up the good work!
what's with people these days, claiming they cant spot a zombie or better yet, 5 of`em? anyways...
i think it's an awesome zombie shirt and i am very tempted to get it.
mostly_harmless_mike said: This work says nothing pro or negative of the brave men who fought for our freedom, It merely mimics a classic photo that came as a result of many a heroic action.
It's not just a photograph. It's a moment in time that represents loss of life and struggle against bad odds. You're splitting hairs to say it's not offensive because somehow it's not exactly the event, but a representation of it. Whatever helps you sleep at night, man.
I agree with Josephus. Representing those men as undead creatures is both flippant and disgusting. It is absolutely negative.
Oh AWESOME!!!! I love the reference and I love zombies. However, I really love the side art. THe firebird is so sweet. Really great artwork here and I hope we see more of it in t-shirts. Way to go!
Think I have to agree that it's in somewhat poor taste because of how much death surrounds every war and zombies are kind of a mockery of death, a lot of zombie movies are funny because of how ridiculous they are. Just think about what you would say if a vet who perhaps watched one of his friends die next to him in combat or something sees you wearing that shirt and asks what it means...what would you say? I do like it, looks cool and all, but I would never wear it because I just find it unnecessary.

FuzzyChronic I don't like their shirt material. There are a lot of good shirts on there though. Their prices are kinda high though. That and I don't like the "I voted for you. I agree with Josephus. Representing those men as undead creatures is both flippant and disgusting. It is absolutely negative.
It is not the same as the actual event. Period. It is merely a design biased off a photograph that was highly associated with the war effort in the pacific. If you find it more suiting to interpret a parody of a well known photograph as the equivalent of the event its self, be my guest. Taking ones inspiration from a particular piece does not constitute defamation of the original piece, or in this case defamation of the people who were in this piece. If that was the case, then hundreds of other similar art pieces would have run afoul of this photograph alone. This photograph is constantly imitated and parodied by everything from children's cartoons to professional paintings simply because of how recognizable this scene is. If we are to denounce one rendition of this, we would have to denounce them all, the funny, the patriotic, the meaningful, and the zombie.
I can't believe all the people freaking out about this. History is just that, history. Maybe we need a zombie with wings flying into the trade towers. I can only imagine the whine-fest that would happen then.
Butternine said: I can't believe all the people freaking out about this. History is just that, history. Maybe we need a zombie with wings flying into the trade towers. I can only imagine the whine-fest that would happen then.
Honestly though, it's just a t-shirt.
@ butternine - couldnt have said it better myself. i totally agree
ok people seriously, this is a great shirt! great design not at all in bad taste, and as far as running out and hugging veteran, dont think so! freedom? i cant even marry who i want without the goverment hving a say so in it, so my point is...the zombies shall rise!

I totally agree! People these days are SO easily offended.. i dont even get it. I love the design personally, and I think its even cooler that you have to take a second look to see they are actually zombies. Side art is amazing too!
I guess as far as generating controversy, as long as people are reacting passionately to your work one way or the other you have to be doing something right...
the only zombie i see is the one coming from the back.
i think the other ones look like soldiers.
as for all this hubbub about offensiveness, its 24 hours.
and then something new comes!
I can't believe how crazy some people are getting about this. First, its art, art pushes boundries, deal with it. Second, disrespecting someones art on the premise of your belief (unsupported) that they are disrespecting something else is kind of hypocritical. This is an awesome shirt with tons of interesting connotations, not everything is going to be a picture of a fuzzy kitten.
Don't like it. I think it is in poor taste as well. Now if it had been using zombies to portray the iraq war, then I would totally understand. This image is an iconic American image of triumph. They were not "zombies" back then like they are today! They actually fought proud and for a cause.... not because some jerk republican tells them to! I am sorry if I offended any vets because I truly do support our troops, but this war is not our war and the powers that be have really created an army of zombies to do their dirty work. It is a true shame. Now on a positive note I liked that robo-skeleton with the butterfly picture on the side! That was awesome!
I'm telling you, read Flags of our Fathers. The photograph was NOT a pose. It was the replacement of the first smaller flag with a larger flag that one of the commanding generals wanted so it could be seen from down below Mt Sirubachi (that's where this flag raising occured). Another fun fact.

It was given to me for my birthday, so I now own(and wear) it. In my opinion, it is a stunning piece of art, and though I did not choose this one, I like it all the same. :)
Words from the Curator: What better way to celebrate an unforgettable and undying image than to use the undead to keep it alive!
Tell us about this design: i like zombies, monsters and all creatures, it was a long time that i want make a mix with zombies and the d'Iwo Jima war.
Tell us about yourself: I am 27 years, and i work in a communication society, my job is to create and make website or animation for promote what the clients wants to promote.
Do you own alot of shirts? If so, what's your favorite? Yeah i wear a lot of shirt...I have no favorite tee shirt, I just wear tee shirts based on my mood. By cons I have a big preference with tee shirt with dark colors
What inspires you? mainly music, everything starts from there I open the itunes to shuffle and let myself be lulled by the music
How did you get into art? Beh I always was drawn to art in general after the tray so I did a degree in applied art. It was cool but since I rarely used the computer I decided to make another license and an MFA in multimedia to improve my skills with computers
What would be your dream job? A dream job would be to work for a very very big box of video games or movies, it really should be kiffant to a website with a very great film or a very big game videos
What are a few of your favorite websites? Oo I have great site I love to share their graphic quality and design. Here's a short list of website that I found very powerful http://www.scarygirl.com/world.php
Any shout outs? I hope that you will like this design;). and sorry for my answers short but good enough I'm French and I'm not very good with English I can understand very easily but I write very bad English. Go to the next time I hope;)

Josephussaid 120 weeks ago

I enjoy it in the same way I enjoyed Zombama Brains :)

True about the exploitation of patriotism. Could've seen it in full force at ground zero after 9/11.

What is dystopia?
Sirknifesalotsaid 120 weeks ago
I got it on a Woot shirt recently and had to look it up. It's the opposite of Utopia.
jimiyosaid 120 weeks ago
I went to Mexico once. I thought I got the same thing from there. Didn't know you could order it from Woot.
I'm so angry that this shirt isn't white, and it's not a Darth Vader shirt!
Josephussaid 120 weeks ago
I wish I could buy it, but it just isn't OK.
Sirknifesalotsaid 120 weeks ago
Did you bring back Swine Flu? It was a random woot shirt. Although if they did offer it for sale it would probably crash their servers. Woot servers are made out of Popsicle sticks.
Somehow there needs to be a shirt on here that's white and black and features skulls, animals, and Star Wars.
Oh and Jimi way to kill a sale for Winterartwork by making the tiger getting punched by a boxing glove on Burgunday. I would've bought it from crappy DBH if it was on white. :P

pucksaid 120 weeks ago
It's not just a photograph. It's a moment in time that represents loss of life and struggle against bad odds. You're splitting hairs to say it's not offensive because somehow it's not exactly the event, but a representation of it. Whatever helps you sleep at night, man.
I agree with Josephus. Representing those men as undead creatures is both flippant and disgusting. It is absolutely negative.

FuzzyChronic I don't like their shirt material. There are a lot of good shirts on there though. Their prices are kinda high though. That and I don't like the "I voted for you.
