About the artist
Words from the curator:
I've been a fan of Jeff Finley ever since I found his work on Emptees and GO MEDIA. I really digged this one because it's a welcome change to his usually crazy and ornate illustration work.
Tell us about this design:
It’s a simple design that’s not intended to be overt or in your face. It’s calming, yet fashionable.
How did you get into t-shirt design?
I started freelancing in 2004 and did a few designs for bands and apparel brands on Myspace. I worked for cheap and tried to get as much work as I could.
What's the first thing you do when you start a design?
Start sketching an idea on paper.
Do you own alot of shirts? If so, what's your favorite?
I own too many t-shirts, my fav is probably this shirt for MeWithoutYou that I bought at a show in 2005. I haven’t listened to the band in years, but I still wear the shirt because it is so comfortable and the design is interesting. I always seem to wear it before other shirts in my closet.
Where would you like to see yourself in 5 years with your art career or other?
Still with Go Media and still doing meaningful and fulfilling design work. I see myself attending more shows like SXSW and doing more panel discussions. I see myself coordinating a successful art, film, and music fest in its 5th year being compared to a diy version of SXSW.
What advice would you offer to aspiring designers?
Freelance as much as you can and find likeminded partners to help you in area where you are weak. Being selfish won’t get you very far, so collaborate with each other and share knowledge.
