"But what in the world did that have to do with the leaf???"
A tanuki (which is, contrary to popular belief, is not exactly a raccoon) would, in folklore, use a leaf, placing it on its head, to transform or disappear. That's what the tanuki suit has to do with the leaf. I'm not too sure that tanuki are supposed to be able to fly in Japanese mythology, but, I guess it probably does if it's supposed to have something to with the tanuki leaf.
ok so i was was wondering about this shirt also.. like i had seen it before... so i went to the Archive to find it.. didnt...but then i went and counted all the dates.. what happened to July 5ths?? its not there...

As artists maintain the rights to their artwork, we do sometimes remove designs from our archives at their request.
Lmao. I remember seeing this on the sidebar. I dont think Mario has enough running space though... :-(. Spread those arms and wag that tail and fly my fat plumber friend. Your princess awaits.. Hopefully she not allergic..

thanks for the info. I always wondered that myself. I got '1UP' on my friends now. I never put much thought into it though considering I was 10 or 11 when SM3 came out. Though the raccoon suit and tanuki suit were 2 different suits. The raccoon was the leaf where as the tanuki suit actually looked like a miniature raccoon suit. I valued the tanuki with my or actually mario's life. Im just a statue.. I swear.. Walk by me already goomba!!

Unless you have a totally flat chest, the stuff on the bottom won't really be seen.
Agreed. Hate shirts like that. That's why I like big prints...cuz I have boobs (well not much of them but still) and I don't want designs to make people stare at my boobs for prolonged periods of time to figure out a design on them because a) I know a sketchy guy who jumps at opportunities to stare at people's boobs for prolonged periods of time and b) It's just awkward and creepy
So love the design, don't like the fact it had a boob print aspect to it
Adorable and creepy at the same time. Super Mario Bros 3 was made a few years before I was born, but I do remember the ears and the tail on the cover. :o Too bad I already bought a shirt this week and the grab bag. D:
I love the design in your portfolio with the two Light bulbs (I'm Ecologic)(Hippie)!!! Is that being printed anywhere, I would love to have one!?!?!?! I totally laughed out LOUD at work (Small office setting).
I remember getting a nice preview of Super Mario Brothers 3 because it was in the movie The Wizard before the game was out. Tanuki suit Mario was great. I always liked the frog suit, hammer brothers suit, and riding in the big boot more though. Although the tanuki suit was probably the most useful suit seeing as how you could just fly off screen for a whole level.
AWWW I want this T-Shirt so bad but I have got no money till next friday which is a week too late ... missed out on grab bag deal aswell due to no money :(
teefury should definitely start carrying shirts in kid sizes and hopefully shrink some designs to fit them. my kid would be extremely jealous of this shirt when i get it!
Pi master. You are insane. I love it. Your entire leg is Mario!! Yeah I'd give you a shirt for free if this was my site, but if you can spend that kinda money on a tat i think(hopefully) $9 wouldn't break you, but smuuuuuurf sweet..anywho now that I went to the atm to make certain I'd be ok. I now bought this shirt. More red for my collection. I hate red but need more to make washing my red's easier. Its a me Mario!

Well the problem is, after spending $1200 on the tat, and probably $200 on nerdy t-shirts already, it's gonna be hard to convince the "old lady" to let me buy another one. LOL
actually i had to log onto my computer to buy this because my phone is being a screwball for some reason and looking at pi masters tat. Its your arm. Great sleeve...figured I'd correct myself before someone else did. Peace!
Finally a return to the quirky humour I'd loved about a few of the shirts on here, and on a great coloured shirt too!
One question though... what's happened to the little sidebar thing that used to come up with the artist's other work? I haven't spotted one for the last few days...

You paid 1200 dollars for THAT?
Ouch.
What did you pay on all yours Fuzzy? The price of Jimiyo's townhouse? :P LOL!
I'd hate to add up what the ink is worth on me.
Lucky enough to know some brilliant artists that I've bartered with.
Extremely picky about who tattoos me as well.
So, not so much a matter of cost as is a matter of talent and artistry that I'd let go on my body.
Feel free to call me a snob. There's way too many good artists out there to just let some Johnny Jackhammer put permanent ink onto you.
I was hoping this would be up soon when I spotted the image again in the pics for the randoms. I almost thought I missed it then, but realized it was a teaser. Perfect timing for me too, a racoon got in the garage yesterday during the middle of the night and made a mess. Then a few hours after this shirt went live, I found it in the live trap that got put out yesterday.
This will go well with the Mario themed shirt I wore today when visiting my Mario fanatic 5 year old nephew, plus SMB3 was one of my favorites. Good thing I came home to find a message from work calling me back for a while, my wallet won't be hurting so bad.
Scarah said: Oh man I spend soooo much time playing this game when I was a kid... I was awesome at the slot machine-like bonus minigame thing.
Wasn't that SMB2?
Maybe they're talking about the matching the top, middle, bottom pieces? SMB2 did have the cherry slot machines.
Yeah I did mean the 3 part top middle bottom thing. I couldn't think of a better way to describe it... I did play SMB2 as well but those minigames were infuriating and impossible...

A word from the curator: Mario 3 was a mysterious game, and at the heart of it all was this strange new leaf power. Gaining the leaf was amazing, because you were outfitted with this badass raccoon/tanooki suit. But what in the world did that have to do with the leaf??? This design tells us what we always suspected: that leaf was a diversion, and Mario was one deeply twisted dude!
Tell us the background of this design. This design emerged from the remember of playing mario, I was in class one day and suddenly came to my mind, the game mario and thought thought I had this idea How did you get started designing t-shirts? emepze a diseñar camisetas hace 4 años, descubrir una web en español que hacía concursos de camisetas, y emepeze a participar, al principio mis diseños eran muy feos, pero con los años vas aprendiendo a utlizar bien los colores, las luzes de los cuerpos.. (rough translation: began to design t-shirts 4 years ago, to discover a Web in Spanish who made contests of t-shirts, and began to participate, at the outset my designs were very ugly, but with the years you are learning to use the colors, shape of the bodies well.) What advice would you offer to aspiring designers? My advice is to never lose hope, if not a day goes well, however much they want to not go well, you have to spend much time, patience and above all win, not born knowing how to design, but is learned over time, and noting much the work of other artists What would be your dream job? create a t-shirt shop with my own designs and create a contest for other designers to participate, other than that devoted to the illustration Do you prefer comedy, theater, or the circus? Comedy! always The moon vs. the sun: which would win the battle? Moon, Moon is the highest tranquility Describe your favorite shirt that you own, and why you like it so much. Now I have two favorite, this shirt is being sold today, because I think a touch of humor is very black, yet necessary, and other design I have a cookie, which is sold in a shop Spanish, because it is a the first design win, and I make this much money now, hehe What was your favorite as a kid: comics, cartoons, or movies? Was there a specific title you liked most of all? Cartoons, a specific title.. yes, Dragon ball What are a few of your favorite websites? ffffound.com smashingmagazine.com
