It is a boat. In the ocean. For people who like boats. And the ocean.

    Also, it looks rad ;)

I like the old pirate-y feel, but this design looks kind of bland on white and natural to me :/

Thanks for putting up a tee once in a while where there doesn't have to be something to "get". Nice job Kristen
  • SteelWoolysaid 123 weeks ago

Hmmm,.. yea, just can't get into this style even when someone approaches it with the whole "I wanted to pay tribute to this style" thing.
I agree, the swallows hurt to look at because of the cliche factor.
I think if you would have made something in the piece somewhat unique then at least it would be a new take on the imagery.
Maybe lightning bolts from the clouds,... like the one on your face:), then the "Til Death We Sail" might have more meaning/impact...
  • robinzeggblusaid 123 weeks ago

kgvect said: I don't get it.

facepalm... not only does the artist explain the thought behind it, but the meaning isn't that deep, there isn't anything to "get"

Nice job on the design :D I do love that you dont have to know a meaning to have a nice illustration. The swallows are classic tattoo, so you have my approval!
    keep up the good work!
  • blahmcblahsaid 123 weeks ago

Wow, this is almost worth buying on Gildan. Almost.
  • Wookeesaid 123 weeks ago

    I really like this design.

This looks like the picture has it on the "silver" shirt not the cream looking natural shirt. I would prefer it on the silver to the natural. I got a natural one before, with the lion head and the shirt is really rough. Did TF previously print on better quality softer shirts and have since switched to Gildan's that are rougher?
  • Ogresaid 123 weeks ago

I really want this shirt. I have to check my funds. I'm with Kristen on the anti Ed Hardy thing.
  • Sirknifesalotsaid 123 weeks ago

Isn't Ed Hardy part of a tag team in WWE?
  • Kimoppisaid 123 weeks ago

I dig this artist more for despising Ed Hardy. I truly feel that Ed Hardy RUINED the old tattoo style art. My younger sister equates ALL tattoos to Ed Hardy and it makes my soul die a little every time.

Kris: Art is great. Style is great. Shading is great. I just wish the flag had been a little more interesting.

Now that I think of it...it reminds me of like.. Sailor Jerry... which is a good thing.

    The man and the rum.

  • steveomacsaid 123 weeks ago

really like this design a lot! clean, simple, classic. there's no joke that needs to be explained or a dated pop culture reference that needs to be justified. just a cool t-shirt.
  • hezaasaid 123 weeks ago

meow, seems kinda dull, not as fun and whimsical as the artist's other pieces. I'd like to see this artist give it another go.

  • DeRocksaid 123 weeks ago

Being a commercial fisherman in Alaska I can definitely relate to "the death we sail". Given I don't have a sailboat, but anyone who has been on open waters knows how dangerous it can be. At the age of 17 I can say that I have legitimately almost died a few times in my life, most people can't even say that when they're 50 years old.
  • DeRocksaid 123 weeks ago

It's like Drinky Crow, Ed Hardy and Flapjack had a baby! Or a background artist. The simplicity is cute tho albeit not cute enough for this purveyor of cute :P Also, it seems like something is missing, like it needs a focal point other than the ship. Both til' and 'til are incorrect and annoying to see. SO MANY people make this mistake. They think they are shortening "until," but the English language already includes the preposition "till" in its vernacular, so there is never a need to shorten "until" with a dump apostrophe. In fact, any dictionary will tell you that till and until are interchangeable. I don't get why people think this is correct. The shirt should say "Till death we sail."

And that is why I will not buy this shirt.

    To prove my point:

i think it just comes down to the fact that it is not common knowledge that "till" is the appropiate word to use. my entire life i thought "til" was the proper word to use right up until now that you informed everyone, so thank you i will spread the word so to speak.

"Till Death we Sail" would look weird, I think. Plus I don't think they had dictionaries back in the day of pirates (though there are still pirates today!!) He probably wrote it as a sailor would! Just a thought!

  • jecrtsaid 123 weeks ago

Don Ed Hardy and Sailor Jerry are practically the same - I mean, they're not, but, as Hardy apprenticed under Sailor Jerry, its dumb to say one is better than the other. Especially since most of Hardy's flash is based off of - or is - Sailor Jerry's. There are a TON of tattoo-ers that worked in this style, Sailor Jerry just became well-known.

All that to say, I think this art definitely pulls off that style. I think the type would be better if it were hand-drawn (or, if it is, not based off of Sailor Jerry's basic lettering). It's still an awesome shirt, though! Great work.

Their tattoo designs may be strikingly similar, but their T-shirt designs differ pretty tremendously. I think that Ed Hardy shirts are pretty cheesy, over-designed messes, while Sailor Jerry's design stick to the style he portrays in his tattoos. Also, Sailor Jerry sticks to the pirate theme by selling Rum, while Ed Hardy sells cologne... I don't think its that dumb to say one is better than the other.

This shirt seems to me to be more like a Sailor Jerry shirt, because the focus is on the ship and phrase, and not part of some indistinct mess.

Haha, no, I'm not a pirate, but I am an editor, so yes, the misuse of the English language does upset me, although I would say "upset" isn't exactly the right term. It's more like fingernails down a chalkboard, a big empty chalkboard in an English classroom, where they apparently aren't teaching children correct grammar and usage these days. :P

Your "Til' = till" argument doesn't even make sense. If the point of the apostrophe (though wrong on all accounts) is to shorten the word, why bother in this case? It is still the same monosyllabic word.

I'm not sure I understand your distinction between improper and incorrect. Both shortened versions are most certainly improper and have only been made "correct" because of the general population's disinterest in, and blatant disregard of, using their language correctly. So these shortened versions have become matriculated into our speech and made to seem correct, when really they are not. :)

Anyway, my point is not to poke at everyone's grammar mistakes but rather just to mention that this shirt is made less desirable for me personally because of its striking grammar error. That's all. :) But again, love the artwork.

I love how much old sailor designs churn up the waters (lame pun!)!
And to set the record straight till IS the correct way of spelling it. But you can abbreviate any word in the English language with a ' which I wanted toadd in to get a bit of urgency and accent in there.
Thanks for the comments everyone :)!
  • krishowardsaid 123 weeks ago

So its kind of till abbreviated to til'
    until abbreviated would be 'til

Fun. :D Wonder how many words here evolved from 'incorrect' use of language in the past.. I embrace it, myself. Using "til'" instead of "till" is only pointless when looking at it from a mathematical stance. As to the distinction between proper and correct - we just have differing perspectives. These terms are neither correct nor incorrect; but they are improper. Like an old sailor.
