    ...I don't get it.

I mean I know who Gutenberg was, but I still don't get it.

That and I think the image is unflatteringly square.
  • naytallysaid 144 weeks ago

I Love this, but all i can think about is steve gutenberg
  • neonixsaid 144 weeks ago

Pretty cool. Too boxed in for my taste though.

it seems one has to BE OG to "get" OG lol
  • daveconreysaid 144 weeks ago

very cool, but I don't like the shirt color.
  • wringzsaid 144 weeks ago

Great concept but this is gonna end up like the Edgar Allan Poe shirt. Sure it's pretty cool but kinda tough to explain to people :))
  • stablercakesaid 144 weeks ago

Yes. Original gangsta', I get that. Hilarious.

I just don't get the application. He was an engraver that invented movable type printing, nothing which really seems to apply to the modern term "gangsta'". I think Shakespeare makes more sense as an OG than Gutenberg.

I don't get what being an artist/engineer/designer has to do with being gangsta'. Sorry, I'm apparently not cool enough for this tee.
  • xylotismsaid 144 weeks ago

    Not my style.

The website is GREAT though. The "Profile" section literally starts with the words "First we understand your brand, then we make it more awesome."
  • TurnThePaigesaid 144 weeks ago

    ugh do not dig this.
    its so plain and ordinary.

  • Muntoesaid 144 weeks ago

This is definitely not my type of shirt, but I really love the old style it's in! The grapes also make me hungry...
  • Kimoppisaid 144 weeks ago

I am excited to see that 2 years of French actually stuck in my brain.

As for the design... I love most of it, but the "OG" doesn't do it for me. Maybe if they had been on the sides of Gutenberg? When I first looked at the image I thought "Fancy Mickey ears?" and unfortunately followed that with "As a girl, that would draw attention to the fact that my melons aren't that perky."
  • Soccerfun88said 144 weeks ago

One use of the phrase of being "gangsta" is being "cool" or "hip".
Gutenburg, by inventing something, was pretty "gangsta". I mean, I really don't know anyone who uses that phrase outside of joking with friends, but if I'm playing indoor or something, and someone does something really good, or completely punks someone else, I might let out a "gangsta" comment.
  • pannysaid 144 weeks ago

I definitely LOLed when I saw this!
  • Soccerfun88said 144 weeks ago

I really need to remember that we have a quote button now...
  • CPUT99said 144 weeks ago

I'm a sucker for those baroque swirly patterns surrounding the chi-ro-ish letters and I dig the old-school style, but I'm kinda with stabler on not really getting it as a joke. I understand "Original Gutenberg" and the whole OG gangsta thing, but ... I dunno I guess maybe I just don't think it's that funny haha... but different strokes for different folks, surely.

Plus that random floating ram head is a little weird.

Overall though, I dig the design. I like the baroque swirls and the old-school flavor to it. I like more than I don't on this.. Blablabla.

  • perssaid 144 weeks ago

When I see "O. G." my first thought is Olive Garden, which makes this shirt a definite no for me. I also am not a fan of the design's shape. Leaving off the grapevines at the top of the design may have helped somewhat.

Grats on the print but not for me.
  • Truth-dare-or-deathwishsaid 144 weeks ago

I really like this. Will sleep on it.
  • jjolsaid 144 weeks ago

If your into printing Gutenberg made that happen. He truly is a pikachu G and def the original Gangsta' of printing.
  • alimdsaid 144 weeks ago

I feel like I, as someone majoring in both art education and history education, should like this, and I do, but not enough to buy it. It would be really hard to explain to people. Also square prints only work for boys, laydeez end up with an odd rectangle with wavy sides, not cool.

It's a nice wood cut looking print though, and that's not a style I can work in, so I'm impressed with that.
  • CPUT99said 144 weeks ago

Come to think of it, if it were just the "OG" along with some of the swirls and vines, I'd be more inclined to buy it.

i love it when a tee feeds us a little history...

and to those complaining about it being "too square" or "boxy"-- i think that's the point. it's supposed to look kind of like a printed page.
  • steveomacsaid 144 weeks ago

This i understand, and i honestly dont think it would be difficult to explain to people 'cuz it isn't a reference to gutenberg being a gangster. It a reference to him being the originator of something...print. At least it wasn't a bunch of non-sense like that puma with clouds and diamonds tee from a while back
  • Motogrl06said 144 weeks ago

I get it and love the wood cut print. Nice work.
  • twoifbyseasaid 144 weeks ago

I would totally buy this if it were an actual print and hang it in my study, but as a shirt, it just doesn't work for me.
I love the old style of it, and the squareness of it, and I "get" it. It's not a joke really, just an art history thing, and that's the best part.
  • Syntheticsaid 144 weeks ago

When I first noticed the title I was hoping it was Steve Guttenberg.
    One can dream.
  • skonen_bladessaid 144 weeks ago

I thought it said O. B. so it took me a while to understand what the heck was going on. Almost there but not a purchase.

@wringz - I bought the Edgar Allen Poe shirt and there's been no explanation necessary. People stop and say 'sweet shirt' and 'Poe!' all the time.
  • Aisselesaid 144 weeks ago

Yeah, so, I really don't get the 'original gangsta' reference at all. I initially thought it said "OK" with the bottom of the K looping around. Why is the G sideways...I would have loved this one if it made more sense. hmm.
  • Blazeldudesaid 144 weeks ago

I think we need a Steve Guttenberg shirt now. I didn't know he had so many fans!

O.G. for a long time now hasn't actually meant "gangsta". It has evolved in non-urban pop culture to apply to somebody who was one of the first people to start a movement.
  • Sirknifesalotsaid 144 weeks ago

I guess the illustration is good but I don't get it. I mean Original Gangsta? I think the joke is a miss and the design is too square for the shirt. Also the grey color of the shirt doesn't work. It makes it feel cheap. Unless if that's what you're going after with a sort of laid back appeal. I don't think the fusing of two different eras works in this case. Just not my cup of tea. Good luck with the sale though.

I'm not alimd, but I've had this happen. Not often, but there are a few people in my life convinced that every t-shirt, no matter how abstract, has a secret meaning (Hi Dad!).

I don't base purchases on that, though- I just make up something crazy. A shocking amount of shirts are about post-industrial macaroni production ;)

    *shrug*

I could care less if a shirt "means" something, per se, but if it's supposed to be some sort of comedic take on something, it should at least be explainable. For example, when people ask me about the TF Dead Bird, I can simply respond with "It's a logo for a t-shirt website I buy from." or I can go with "He flew into a window."

Not that this particular shirt goes one way or another, the only reason I'm not buying it is because the design itself doesn't particularly appeal to me. If I'm gonna spend my eleven dollars and walk around wearing something, it might as well be something I enjoy seeing, right?

I'm not in it to make a fashion statement, I don't need to tell a story with my outfit every day, I just like having a cool-looking, unique piece of clothing.

Nothing against the artist, of course. Today's tee just doesn't float my boat, is all.
  • CPUT99said 144 weeks ago

True, I wear a shirt primarily just because I think it looks "cool" rather than it speaking to some deep-seated belief or interpretation of mine. Granted, I might snag one because it speaks to me personally in some abstract way, but typically that's not what makes me throw my money toward it. Just that initial "oh, groovy" is reason enough.

And blablabla etc etc. It's bowling and boozing time, bitches!

    ...okay

Well speaking for myself, what I meant is that I don't want to throw 9 dollars at something I don't fully understand, not that I'm interested in actually wanting to understand it.

Exactly how I feel. If the graphic is pleasing to me, I buy the shirt. If it doesn't, I don't. I don't look for meanings or stories. If someone were to ask me what it means, I would look at them like they were crazy and tell them "It's a shirt with a graphic, get over it" LOL. The Teefury bird is easy because it is a logo and the monster collab is just that, but other than that I wouldn't explain a shirt.

Everyone making idiotic comments about this shirt needs to realize that without Johannes Gensfleisch zur Laden zum Gutenberg this website wouldn't exist. And as much as it pains me being a printer and print historian to see someone of such monumental importance to the world popularized and depicted is such a way I was thrilled to receive this t-shirt from a close friend as a birthday.
