I am buying this. Awesome work. I also dug your owl tee you had featured on here awhile ago : http://www.teefury.com/archive/429/LUCKY%20DAY but was disappointed the Men's wasn't also on that blue. Your work -I think- definitely pops more on a bright colored tee than relegating it to an earthy/subdued tone.
All I know for certain is this: a groovy, stylish illustration in a darker ink on a red tee = insta-buy for me.
Now, if tomorrow's collab tee features my doodle on it I will be out 22 bucks in 2 days, which is no bueno considering I was supposed to ~save~ money this weekend! smuuuuuurf you, Teefury! =D
I dunno what the S word is censored to, but basically your work is the shizzy-to-the-wizzy. I like it a lot. For lack of better words...
A+ 4.0 Outstanding. haha... Okay I'll rub the brown off of my nose now...
Before I throw down the cash for this can anyone tell me how a Medium fits? -and not saying "like a medium" haha... I've ordered larges from here so far but they fit a ~little~ ... uh... large... on me. I'm curious if medium is a huge gap. I ordered a large from shirt.woot and it fits me fine, but the TeeFury tees seem to be a little more on the lengthy/thick/baggy side... and I tried shrinking it in the wash with hot agua.
So basically I guess I'm wondering if a medium not shrunk intentionally will be a huge gap between a large shrunk intentionally...If... that makes sense.
I recognized this art style immediately and had to have this shirt. Matty did some killer artwork for one of my favorite albums, The Physicist Has Known Sin by The Evening Episode. Glad to get something else he's done.
@CPUT99 - My husband normally wears a size Large but finds that Teefury size Medium fits him better. They're nice & long so he doesn't lose anything in the length by ordering smaller. But the torso & sleeves are more proportionate. (He's fairly trim around the waist and has broad shoulders) Hope that helps.
@stoweaway that helps a lot, thanks! sounds like medium is the route to go for me. I always felt like I was wearing a big basketball shirt (for my body anyway...) with the Larges...or maybe one of those old-school tweety or taz shirts with them in overalls and a backwards cap... which actually limited how much I wore them. Maybe this'll be the first purchase from here I truly rock out with my... ah... anyway. thanks for the info.
Just pulled the trigger. Sweeeet. Maybe it'll get here by next Thursdee for my Portlandia trip. Alright that's enough blabbing outta me on this thread for a lifetime. Hope you get lots of sales/sells/cells
@matt2kool: you figured out my biggest regret with this drawing... the two fish bumped right on top of each other didn't shout at me as being wrong until the drawing was pretty much done.
Sometimes when I draw, I don't filter my ideas and I just keep building the composition and changing its shape and I forget about the elements a bit too much. I get a bit too sucked into the drawing.
Thank you for your questions, actually, they are pretty easy to answer...
#1 in a lot of my art I tend to use abstract fills when I don't want to cram too much detail into certain parts of a drawing. Sometimes it is come cloud shapes, other times it is more like arcs and domes.
#2 I guess the hands only fit in because I go in and out of phases where I am obsessed with drawing hands. Hands, ears and faces... I love drawing them all too much (but hands especially).
Thank you for the questions and don't worry, I wouldn't be against critiques at all.
@Matty. I'm so glad I have the ability to buy this.
I love owls. I love rabbits. I love those hands.
I missed your "Lucky Day" by way of brain malfunction.
Not a regret... I mean, that killer rabbit has to have
something fitting to stand on.
-=Full Circle=-
I have been following teefury for about 5 months now, and have only ever bought two shirts: the first one you drew, and now this.
I cut up the first one and made it into a really nicely fitting v-neck with cap sleeves and back-tying ribbon and it is now my favorite piece of clothing my wardrobe. I plan on doing the same with this shirt and loving it just as much. Your art is really an inspiration. :)
I am THRILLED (pardon the Billy Mays emphasis) that you're on TeeFury. I've purchased several prints from you in the past and I've been a big fan of your work for a long time. Congrats on more well-deserved exposure to your work.
Matty, i was wowed by all of your work a few months ago, with all of its pictures and animal masks.
and now i absolutely LOVE this tee, and the color is so earthy and wonderful.
i am sad tho, because i will have to spend on TWO shirts, today and tomorrow.
gasp the money.
but thank you for this wonderful design it is incredible :]
especially the walrus, whom is actually an ostrich.
i agree, i'm a little over the animal shirts? what's the obsession with tigers and bears etc. I mean, its a great drawing and some great art, but as a shirt? I just don't know.
nice, i like the simple color scheme, and then there is plenty of detail in the fur and scales
its funny how you can go to stores and buy artsy t-shirts for thirty bucks, when you can buy limited edition t-shirts from cooler artists for eleven. i like this site!
last time you were up with lucky day i totally bought it and I love it! today's shirt is more of the same awesomeness. you do fantastic work! Oh, and where is this preview that i'm hearing about?
@mel. Of course. Miss you more tho. Was wondering where you were.
Sorry about bein' under the weather.
I had a crappy time after eating SPICY Garlic hot wings.
10 minute harsh panic attack. I couldn't even leave.
Finally made it home tho. Glad I wasn't driving, I woulda been stuck!
Much better now with chicken fried potato wedges at my side :D
that is the worst feeling in the world... as a girl who deals with anxiety attacks I feel ur pain. Theres nothing worse. Im glad you are okay now :) Ive been around though... snuggling up in my bed mostly haha. Today I finally made it to the living room couch. Potato wedges sound yummy!!
I only have 1 red shirt and i love it, i would love a 2nd red shirt, but im not sure if i should purchase this one, i love the design but im so torn on decisions, DAMNIT!
He's back! And still drawing like a star. This piece is actually an older work of Matt's that I've loved for years. Such a fun play of creatures chillin' together in harmony, fish being able to breathe out of water (unless they are all taking a dip in the pool). All on a hot black on red tee. It's a beaut.
What's a day in the life of Matty like?
A basic day for me is filled with daydreaming, fun, dad actions, lots of music, too many emails, drawing as much as right wrist can handle, mailing out art packages and some snacks. Plus sometimes I sleep.
Sloth vs. anteater: which would win the battle?
Anteaters look nice, but sloths are dang awesome... that huge, long neck with the little, bulby head on the end? Pure, 100% awesomeness. And if an anteater fought a 3-toed sloth, it would lose bigtime in a furious, super slow bloodbath.
Describe your favorite shirt that you own, and why you like it so much.
I have this really old T-shirt that I got used and it must have been done for some school fundraiser, or some odd in-joke. It says: 'I SURVIVED KINEMATICS... ROSY', and in the middle of the block font text is a drawing of a mean looking teacher with a crewcut. I have no idea what kinematics is, but I want to. Plus the shirt is mustard yellow. I've worn it for years and I refuse to get rid of it.
If you could collaborate with anyone, who would you pick?
Jeeze, this is a hard question. I like a few too many artists and I cannot round this down to one. But I guess I can make a short list:
-Daniel Clowes
-Jack Davis
-Charles Burns
-Tim and Eric
-PJ Harvey (on some music)
-my dad
All of my lists seem so nerdy and indecisive.
If you had a time machine, which era would you visit first?
I don't think my answer is especially profound, but I would love to go back to the 1950's, or 70's. Either era would be amazing.
What has been your most inspiring art experience?
I spent six years in corporate art jobs after graduating from art school in 1999. The work was hard, the hours were long and worst of all, most of what I worked on never got too creative. So after a bit of a breakdown in late 2005, I decided to leave the corporate world, try self employment and work on my own terms. My art got stronger, I've met some great people and I have seen and done so many things I would never seen if I was stuck in a 55 hour a week desk job. It was the best thing for my art making that I could have ever done and I couldn't be much more happy.
