Ive always liked Jimi. I've been waiting for it. I deeply enjoy seeing the name of the shirt before the design pops up. I like making my own creation in a way. That one second of what does the description mean is cool. Eager but quick anticipation. Could be better facialwise but i love the green and blue combination. Wish it wasnt on black but all in all good job and thanks. I bought one
I are first to open funny secret!
I demand free shirt prize, like with emails... except, I never have a chance with the emails because everyone else is lame.

Awesome. I'm very glad that the artist stayed true to Hendrix' upbringing in that he played a right-handed guitar as a youth, strung the opposite way, because a left-handed guitar was so hard to come by.
At Stanford in 1959, Kesey volunteered to take part in a CIA-financed study named Project MKULTRA at the Menlo Park Veterans Hospital. The project studied the effects of psychoactive drugs, particularly LSD, psilocybin, mescaline, cocaine, AMT, and DMT on people. - That's according to Wikipedia.
As for the shirt - As a long time (since the 60's) fan of Jimi Hendrix), I couldn't wear this shirt. It doesn't look anything like him for one thing. Secondly, I'm not big on the colors.
snarkygal said: And btw, the hippies back then were not a scourge ;-) They were mostly college students.
So they were a scourge then. :P
As for the shirt I do like the colors but would've like a more accurate look of Jimmy. It looks FatAlbertstylish. Maybe that's what you were going for.
I dig the colors, and personally, I think the work represents well one of Jimi's classic 'guitar faces.' It might not be a portrait, but I'd recognize it/him in a heartbeat.
I really love the colors, looks great in my honest opinion! The only thing I would change is the shirt color it's printed on. There have been quite a few black shirts as of late, and I for one have too many already!

I agree, there have been quite a few black shirts. Black shirts are cool, but i don't know if it mixes with Jimi.
This is the absolute best shirt, and relates to me more than any shirt I've seen here on Teefury. I'm not going to explain why. I just want to say thank you for this one, and in a weird way, fulfilling a year long obsession and musical creations. This shirt just seems to say the end, your off, in my situation anyways. Perfect timing. Absolutely perfect timing for my life's story. Amazing.
I love the colors and I like Jimi, but I'm not sure if it would jive IRL. So, I'm gonna buy it and if I don't like it, my little brother can have it. He loves Jimi and Teefury.
I'm so surprised that there aren't many Jimi fans here!!!!
All I have to ask is "Are you serious?" The man is a legend!
As for the shirt, I think the artist really captured the emotion of Hendrix. The colors are perfect for this design & hendrix too. My only thing is the music note on his cheek, it clutters up his face. But I like how you put subtle key elements through out the design. Very well done!!
-Having the notes hidden in the face and fire is a good touch
-The likeness is too cartoonish for my taste
-Keep working on your color theory
-A brightly colored blank would have made this shirt sing
Do you see what I see? I'd double-down on Jimi's on black shirts.....

Thank you for the nice words! Unfortunately, this design was made almost 5 months ago so the frequency of black shirts is out of my hands.

Hey man I'm glad it affected you in some way. If my art can move and inspire people half as much as Jimi's music did, that would be something.
Um, pardon me for being the voice of litigation but won't the proprietors of the Hendrix estate have something to say about this seemingly unauthorised use of Jimi's image?
deadshallrise said: Um, pardon me for being the voice of litigation but won't the proprietors of the Hendrix estate have something to say about this seemingly unauthorised use of Jimi's image?
@ deadshallrise: I don't think this will be a problem. If you go back and click on "Archive" you will see that there have been quite a few 'celebrity' inspired tees in the past, everyone from Spock, Joaquin Phoenix, Radiohead, etc. etc.
deadshallrise said: Um, pardon me for being the voice of litigation but won't the proprietors of the Hendrix estate have something to say about this seemingly unauthorised use of Jimi's image?

It amazes me how many people think portraiture/caricature is somehow illegal.

People don't legally own their likeness.
Actually Stabler, they do. There's even a cause of action of "misappropriation of name or likeness". The question is whether the work is sufficiently transformative. This is the Kirby v. Sega case.
To say that people don't own their likeness is categorically wrong.

Yea there have been a lot of cases of the person responsible for the estate taking this to litigation because the sales would be coming from the likeness of the character. The only people as far as I know that are immune from using their likeness are Political figures.
This design definetly is art and inspired by Jimi..
"The California Supreme Court unanimously ruled April 30 that Civil Code Sec. 3344.1under which a celebritys estate receives exclusive rights of publicity for 70 years following registration with the secretary of statedoesnt abridge free speech rights of those who reproduce celebrity images unless a reproduction incorporates significant creative elements.
The state court said Saderups renditions of three unsmiling stooges, including two with their eyes open wide, were merchandise, not art
Under the statute, no one else may use the persons name, image, identity, or persona for commercial purposes unless the estate or its successor consents or the use falls within a statutory exemption. "

People don't own their likeness - they possess the right to publicity, however, even that is debatable depending on usage and locale. A single caricature is legally allowed - it's in the mass reproduction of that image where lines must be drawn between transformative use and infringement of rights.
This is obvious a mass production, so it could be scrutinized.
In the more recent case brought up by Tiger Woods, Woods lost. I think an argument can be made in this case that the likeness is transformative enough to be protected as fair use. It's obviously not a photographic rendering - it also carries implied feeling/meaning. Just my opinion, but I think it would pass the Saderup case test - which, as Teefury is based in CA, the Saderup case would be used as a standard.
IMO - I don't see the H endrix estate pursuing TF for damages as the result of a one-day sale.
Every time a shirt comes up on Teefury that looks like something, the same old question of its legality comes up along with it. Teefury has been fine in the past for all its shirts, and I'm sure they have or consult a lawyer(s) at some point about doing shirts like this. Maybe not individual shirt consultations but I'm sure they know exactly where to draw the line. I'm sure they get a bunch of stuff that goes over the line that they toss, we just don't see them so we don't know. What we do see is the stuff deemed to be OK.
deadshallrise said: Um, pardon me for being the voice of litigation but won't the proprietors of the Hendrix estate have something to say about this seemingly unauthorised use of Jimi's image?
No, Cause Jimi doesn't look like a chunk of coral with a guitar.

Ok, but isn't that only for misappropriation? Or slander/libel? Slander and libel are illegal if they actually serve to defame a person.
You go ahead and sue every caricature artist/portrait artist in the country and see how far you get.

you can make single productions of caricatures all you want. if you reproduce those caricatures in mass numbers, then you have to prove that you're doing more than just using the person's image.
I'll get a tee BC I love Jimi and the colors are cool and it's a pretty awesome shirt, but I also wanted to mention that I love your EYE OF GOD prints at Etsy!

So you're going to sue magazines that mass-publish caricatures instead? Or use likenesses for packaging? Or gag illustrations on merchandise?
I'm really surprised this stuff is coming up for this tee which is obviously art drawn mostly from the idea of Jimi and the traced photo of Joaquin Phoenix flew right by.
Words from jimiyo: It's Jimi Hendrix...Yo. Pale blue and mint green all in your eye! Who didn't go through a Jimi phase? I know I did. Time to relive those blurry formative years from highschool, and go around saying, "Yeah man."
Do you like Hendrix?
I'm a huge Hendrix fan and usually do a tribute piece every year. He was the greatest guitarist ever. It's probably for the best he's dead though. This way he can't ruin his legacy by showing up on American Idol to jam with Clay Aiken. Or he'd just be a mess like Ozzie.
Hendrix fan eh? Are you a hippie or dope smoker? Are hippe and dope smoker synonymous?
You know it's funny, a lot of people think the CIA was indirectly behind the hippie movement. In the paranoia during the Cold War, they experimented on everyday citizens with LSD and other drugs as a form of mind control/truth serum. Ken Kesey, author of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and original "Merry Prankster", was one of many test subjects back in the day. So you can put the blame for the hippie scourge squarely on Uncle Sam's shoulders.
So what's been going on since your last print? How bout that Christina?
I've been working on a number of projects and just trying to improve with every piece. I have a shirt coming out from Something Sacred Clothing later this summer, so keep an eye out for that. Also, you can pick up some prints and other things at my Etsy store
Christina is still awesome. Possibly even more awesome than before.
Where would you like to see yourself in 5 years with your art career or other?
Celebrating the fifth anniversary of you asking me that question.
You seen any movies lately? Any recommendations?
I thought Doubt was a really good movie. The ending left itself open to interpretation and discussion, which I enjoy. Also, Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman are both fantastic actors.
Name 3 of your top ten movies of all time.
Gigli, Showgirls and Waterworld.
You are in New York. So really, is everyone like those people in Boiler Room?
Oh yeah. In fact every movie/TV show you've ever seen about New York is true. It's filled with cutthroat business men, sassy sex columnists and CHUDS. My brother saw Cloverfield roller blading in Central Park the other day, but he wouldn't stop for an autograph. What a jerk.
Any shout outs?
Thank you to my friends and family for support, and TeeFury and Jimiyo for another print! Also please check out some artist friends:
