    This. Is. ASTOUNDING.

Holy crud I love it and would have TOTALLY BOUGHT IT IF...if I were actually into Land of the Lost :C

Not that I don't LIKE it, I've just not really WATCHED it. I'd feel like a mega-poser :C

BUT amazing design anyway :D LOVE it on the blue, lets get more of that color combo!

    Pop culture reference? Yes.

    Original? See second comment.

The third design on the left, the gorilla vs. the octopus...that's amazing.

  • thejakeyl88said 136 weeks ago

Same, it looks so sexy in blue, darn it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • AdderXYUsaid 136 weeks ago

Wouldn't this have been WAY BETTER if you had created a unique lizard mary holding an original monkeyjesus? Because if that had been the case, this would be pretty cool, but as it is, it's just one more case of "hey, here's a popular thing, how can I fit it into a design". And with the movie coming out, it doesn't even have a nostalgia feel. Just a "hey, once again, we are selling unofficial merch" feel.

Seriously, I never watched LotL and I knew this was a Sleestak immediately. Wouldn't creating something original have been easier than copying a character recognizably?
  • simplyspedsaid 136 weeks ago

  • melbelsaid 136 weeks ago

  • popmonkeysaid 136 weeks ago

AdderXYU: No. I'll be sure and consult you next time, though. Thanks for the feedback.
  • stablercakesaid 136 weeks ago

I agree with you on some level, Adder. I def would have bought the shirt in the case of original characters since it wouldn't have a reference that would make me a poser, but I still think the reference seems appropriate.

I mean, LotL doesn't get a lot of apparel love (unless it's just a livetraced photo of a Sleestak), especially original ideas like this and I'm sure a lot of fans are going to be pretty happy with it!

@Pop-Monkey- Digging that Ugly Stick design! Is that available anywhere?
  • thejakeyl88said 136 weeks ago

Is that Qbert on the right? Wow thats cool.
  • sawbones84said 136 weeks ago

well designed, however not so good on a t-shirt. i don't think this will sell very well on this site.

  • elvenjuiceboxsaid 136 weeks ago

I love your illustrative work. I didn't get the refrence for this one at first but it is pretty neat, I'll have to think on it a bit.
  • disembodied headsaid 136 weeks ago

This is still a fantastic design. I also grew up watching LOTL and the nostalgia factor made me buy it, plus, I don't see too many pop culture tees that are as skillfully drawn as this one. Good work, popmonkey. Ignore the haters.
  • Hopeysaid 136 weeks ago

I love this! Two are headed my way.
  • stablercakesaid 136 weeks ago

This is actually a record low of haters on TF, me being a repeat offender. Sounds like this one will be another hit :D

I'm going to continue commenting until I convince myself to buy it, poser or not.
  • lowbatteriesaid 136 weeks ago

Like the art, it's well done, but not buying tonight.
  • leastsaid 136 weeks ago

The art is great, as is the rest of your work, but I don't think I'll be picking this one up, mainly because the land of the lost movie that just came out was so terrible.

    Nice work though (:
  • ishmaelonesaid 136 weeks ago

cool design, but a pass for me. i would, however, kill someone to own that monkey v. octopus design on a shirt.
  • downrodeosaid 136 weeks ago

this is awesome, I'm so getting one. The linework is brilliant, the colors are dope... need i say more.
  • AdderXYUsaid 136 weeks ago

I agree with you on some level, Adder. I def would have bought the shirt in the case of original characters since it wouldn't have a reference that would make me a poser, but I still think the reference seems appropriate.

As the parody pieces go, this is worlds better than most. I can't deny that. But I still can't help but feel that original will always trump this sort of thing, because it is more universal that way. To me I feel like parody should build out from the parodic element, as opposed to shoehorning the reference in. Obviously, given the frequent content shoved at us here lately, I am alone in that. Certainly no artists seem to prefer originality to that.

There is also the matter of the designer. I would be far more apt to forgive if it wasn't someone with two video game designs on the sidebar and the top-selling TF shirt which was a parody combining one iconic graphic with one overdone and overpopular meme. In that light it doesn't seem like an artistic choice, but a marketing one. It doesn't help that he gave a stank attitude already at the thought of possibly making this with original characters.

  • popmonkeysaid 136 weeks ago

Adder, art and marketing go hand in hand if you want to make a living at it. but I'm doing what I enjoy first and foremost. Snap to and stop trying to win the Ms. Sassy Pageant (you don't have the legs for it). And clearly originality isn't my thing -- goodness me, I did 2 video game based pieces that I might as well have just copied and a Shepard Fairey/zombie mash-up (which was itself a sort of commentary on the "originality" of the source material)! I'm just in it for the mad cash -- creativity be damned!

I dismissed your first comment so brusquely because you missed the entire point of the illustration. I wasn't trying to capitalize on the release of the disappointing movie, I'm paying tribute to a fondly remembered, foundational part of my pop-culture roots, and how this sort of thing can be like a religion for us pop-culture junkies in our youth (and sometimes beyond). I didn't grow up watching the UNIQUE LIZARD MARY AND ORIGINAL MONKEYJESUS SHOW (though I did just copyright that name, cuz it's brilliant), I grew up watching Sid and Marty Krofft's whacked-out life-sized puppet shows! There's plenty of originality and uniqueness to be found in my work -- that's not necessarily what I was aiming for here, and the "easy" road doesn't enter into the picture.

    Thanks for your feedback.
  • Link117said 136 weeks ago

  • ironpensaid 136 weeks ago

XD not a buy for me, but love the irony. Love your sidebar work, too.
  • AdderXYUsaid 136 weeks ago

    My question, then, is two-fold:

Does every bit of nostalgia need to be recreated?

And other than "I wanted to make a sleestak mary", why can't mary not be a sleestak? That's my main feeling here: I would personally enjoy this far more as a shirt if I didn't have to "get" it. And you could say "I was inspired by how I worshiped the Krofts as a child, so I made characters with sleestaks and whatever that other critter is in mind". And you could have your homage, and people who liked LOTL would still love it, but it would also have a universality, insofar as how belief in your favorite cryptids can be likened to belief in religion.

Past that, I thank you for your thusfar deep and thought-provoking reasoning. I prefer to know quickly just how idiotic my commentary is, and I'd Arrrgggh to look like a fool in front of someone so successful. I suppose I should have just kept my suggestions to myself, though. You're selling far more shirts than I am, so what can I have to say about the subject?
  • Reckoningsaid 136 weeks ago

    goddam.
for what it IS and is SUPPOSED to BE, this is brilliant. do you not comprehend that there is a specific market for those that want to own nostalga, esp. the pop culture type? if that is not your cup of tea, GREAT man. not everyone makes turtlepoo FOR YOU. this is a well drawn piece of original art using a very recognizable subject matter.
its EXACTLY what he was going for.
if you want everyone to conform to your stantards alone, then you need to create adderapprovedshirts.com to print what YOU like.

Disembodied head -- A third printing of the ZOMBAMA shirt may be forthcoming. Stay tuned to my blog for news.

Thanks for all the positive comments, folks. I realize this shirt isn't for everyone, and has a much narrower appeal than most "arty/designy" shirts, and most of you have been gracious even if the shirt is not for you.
  • Scarletsaid 136 weeks ago

    ...I think Picasso stinks....
  • razz007said 136 weeks ago

very cool design man. very tempted to buy it. Need to make some room in my budget but I think rent is going to beat you out for my money. Otherwise i would definitely buy. Those who say otherwise have no sense.

trying to create something to please everyone, that in itself is selling out to please the masses without satisfying yourself as an artist. I'm sure this was created for the sole purpose of doing something fun and enjoyable art wise. Those that don't get it or dislike LotL be damned. I loved LotL as a kid and all the Sid and Marty kroft stuff. This shirt was meant for those fans. If your not into it then this was not meant for you. Simple as that. At some point a shirt that is just right up your alley I will probably very much dislike. You can't please all the people all the time nor should an artist try. To each his own.

to the uninitiated, this is just a weirdly bizarre illustration. Which is almost enough to justify a purchase by itself.

However, also add that the color combination is brilliant, the illustration is super-clean, and it should be bought and worn by many.

Don't get me wrong I don't dislike art, but the way it's being tossed around you'd think it's what makes the world go round :)

I find a hard time understanding why even a few people would be ragging on this amazing artist, look at whats going on here? Thats talent... As for originality it takes a creative fun mind to use something from pop-culture, or just something familiar to many people and put a twist on it. He does that well, not to mention the style and illustration abilities are great.
Cool work and congrats on the print.

  • spastasticnomadicsaid 136 weeks ago

I usually dislike the pop culture references here as I don't watch TV, live outside of the States a lot of the time, and I never 'get' them nor would wear them.

This one, however, I finally 'get'. I loved LotL as a kid and even made my parents call me Holly for a while. I will not be seeing the new movie version, however.

I can appreciate the reference (although I don't understand the religious tie-in) and the work, but I won't be buying. Even though there is still more than 12 hours for me to change my mind. :/

  • kihtensaid 136 weeks ago

    dear popmonkey,

i didn't watch land of the lost so i probably won't buy this because it's a tribute to a childhood favorite i never had or shared.
but this is one of my favorite shirts in weeks that has appeared on teefury. and if this was a childhood fav i shared, i would be the first to buy it. even though teefury shirts fit me WEIRD. i bought "it's not lupus" and the multi artist "monster" shirt, even though they are more likely "pajama" clothes cause they don't fit me well because... well i love intriguing and amusing artwork.

rest assured however, lotl fan or no, i appreciate this design and what went behind it, and more importantly i checked out your website and am a fan for life. i adore your drawing style. i adore the references to things like donkey kong (i'm a gamer) and sesame street fighter. zobama is more well known but i still think thats awesome. icon + zombies? ftw, sir. ftw.

just wanted you to know that even people NOT buying your shirt has led to fans who will follow your art and will be tracking down other sites where you may sell your apparel that may be more fitting to their personalities. namely. me.

also, side note of interest: i signed up for teefury today (even though i follow daily, i've never signed up) just so i could leave this comment.

your art is ftw. rock on.

  • popmonkeysaid 136 weeks ago

kihten -- thanks so much. That was extremely gracious of you to say, and you made me feel all warm inside. Glad I got you to sign up for TeeFury. Stick around and chime in whenever you like.

I anticipated the risks of creating a design tied so specifically to a pop-culture "moment". I don't know if the movie bombing impacted the appeal of this design at all, but I realize there are a lot of folks out there who are too young to remember LotL or just didn't latch onto it when it was around. My next design will hopefully have a more wider appeal.

For those of you asking about the Octopus Vs. Gorilla design -- that's coming to a t-shirt near you hopefully very soon. Stay tuned.

The Q*Bert and Donkey Kong designs were done just for fun (and to add to the portfolio) and have not been produced as shirts yet, but that may change.

And to anyone still wanting the ZOMBAMA shirt, I have only women's sizes left for sale at www.popmonkey.bigcartel.com
Men's sizes are all sold out, but I may be reprinting soon.

Got it, but I had to use IE. It's not working on my Firefox 3.5 nor Google Chrome. Go figure.

Kinda cool! My uncle actually had cameos in the original series... makes it even better for me!

Just got my shirts in the mail and am very disappointed at the poor printing quality this time around. The ink buildup is way too heavy, resulting in thick messy blotches that completely ruin the detail of the design. Anybody else experience this? Not sure what happened here. Looks like a careless rush job. Not sure if I want to take a chance on any more shirts turning out like this.
