Pretty much one of my least favorite shirts on here ever.
The content is fine, dragons are cool, but really to me the quality just seems so.. poor.
I've disliked shirts in the past (ok, more liked hated) due to the style, but could understand other liking them - they just weren't my cup of tea.
This shirt, however, I couldn't understand anyone liking.

Raaaaawr!!!! I like dragons... not to sound like a major dork but ever since I saw the first (or second?) Harry Potter and I saw Hagrid get a little baby dragon I wanted one sooooo bad!
Maybe I will get a lizard.
p.s. that was a rawr like... scary rawr... not an ugh rawr.
and I am the first to say im not into fantasy or sci fi stuff normally... ive never played D&D or anything like that... but theres something I like about Dragons... I think its because of all the fairy tale dragons... I dont always like to put dragons into the geek fantasy catagory.

I don't understand why you can't understand anyone liking it, haha. How is the quality poor? It's very well-drawn and well-rendered.
The only thing I dislike about it are those red shape things. I think it would be a lot cooler if they'd just did the whole dragon in all it's majesty.

This is a European dragon and not an Eastern Dragon. I did play D&D. First edition though. This is a pretty interesting design. Although I'd love it if it was a full bodied dragon.
i don't hate it, but i would've bought the eagle star design thing on the side examples. this is definitely one of those 'got me some play at the ren-fair' kind of shirts.

I agree. Nice shading but it looks kind of eh as a shirt; the red lines don't help and the pixelated look is bothering me.
I'd probably prefer it more if it was just a black and white sketch. In your portfolio you do those and they look good. Although I don't remember Anubis being that jacked! LOL!
i usually buy all the dragon shirts cause my son is obsessed. ill have to ask him in the morning if he needs this one too. he doesnt care so much how the shirt fits...

first of all, I'd like to congratulate the artist on getting their shirt printed.
That being said, this definitely isn't one of my favorites. I love dragon designs, and I've been known to wear a bunch of dragon shirts in the past. But my problem with this one, is that it seems that the perspective is WAY off. It's rendered beautifully, but after looking at the artwork on the side, I think that ht perspective is off on all of the drawings except the phoenix.

However, WHY do we have to have the red over layer which doesn't add anything. If it suppose to mean something - it doesn't say anything to me. Is the red layer referencing a game, etc. so that ONLY those know the joke would understand.
Look at all the sweet Dragons on the side-bar, there are no over layers clouding them. Its just like yesterday's "Sitar Hero", LESS IS BEST, we didn't need the word over layer on it - Tonight we didn't need the red over layer on my Dragon. Boooo.
So like last night, I'll have to dream on it. Last night the Dream Knights said thumbs down.
Dig dragons but not so much sporting on a tee, which just isn't my "style" he's well-rendered and the abstract shape/design surrounding him goes well with his horns...
I can admire this as an illustration but as a teeshirt I wouldn't be the one to wear it. Which is just a personal preference... blablabla. Congrats on the print!
As anmatos has pointed out, the red line pattern does not especially add anything to the (already well) rendered dragon. Plus, if he's an ice dragon -wouldn't a blueish hue be more appropriate? Eh. Nitpicks haha...

But i can see what she was going for. I'll definately be ordering this shirt, two actually one for me and one for my wife as she likes it as well.
Not even an hour into the day and we've come to the conclusion that most of the tee-furyinites (i'll render that name to the people that are here first thing on most days) do not like this particular tee. I personally think its well done BUT take out the red things and go full body and maybe more people would dig it. A fire maybe with a knights helmet used as a stew kettle. Thats what i want. Silly humor. The dinosaurs not smiling for a camera. And on another note what does D&D have to do with anything? Its just a dragon. Doesnt matter if you played D&D or read a fairytale. I think dragons are cool

Hey, great minds think alike... I saw a snail too! This is a lovely rendering indeed. I have a strange feeling I've said that before though - when I first saw this shirt on a buddy in high school, back in '99. Hey, you just caught me a decade too late. At that time, I had no fewer than a dozen dragon shirts of sorts in my closet and I would have been all over the intricate detail surrounding the eye.
Today though, what I want from TeeFury is a shirt that will make people ask "what the 'ell are you wearing?!?"
I don't really like this. Part of it is because of the texturing. The face of the dragon is very clean and then the dragon ends up turning into a polka-dotted mess. Then there is that strange cloudy poof behind the dragon. (Is this the second possible fart cloud this week?) When there's a puff with no purpose, I immediately wonder why the animal is farting. And lastly... the red spikey things... what are they? I think more distractingly: Why do some of them include the dragon? Some not include the dragon? Some are in the foreground of the grey puff? Some are behind the grey puff? To me it looks like superfluous spikes to add color without really adding to the dragon itself.
Ouch... I guess I really didn't like this print. But I DO love the top two designs on the right.

Dragons don't do that.
But that's not a bad thing right? Because after all, what you want and what someone else wants from a Teefury shirt can and will be two completely different things. So a shirt with a Dragon may not appeal to you, it may be too 99 or not enough "what the 'ell are you wearing?!?" for your taste, but that's okay, there will be more shirts! Yay!
Generally speaking I am a -huge- dragon fan but I have to agree there are several things that detract from this design for me.
The Red lines, while I can sort of see their intent, adding contrast I suspect? Just distract me from the face of the dragon.
The transfer from the rather nice shading on the upper neck and face to the 'dots' is jarring to me as well.
For the face I have to say "Good job" but for composition I think it's really not put together for 't-shirts' for those two reasons, though perhaps oddly I think you could have pulled it off as a print.
I wish I could point to the side and say "this is one I'd like better" but I'm just really not personally fond of how there are 'tribals' and 'dots' as 'frames' even though I think the basic artwork is really quite good.
It definitely has that 80's PC game style to it. Maybe better as a print as others have said.
The perspective warp on the skull drives me craaaaaaaaazy. Obviously this artist specializes in dragons and like creatures. That means I'd expect the muzzle/nostrils and brow to line up right and the jaw not to be sideways. The artist should try flipping their art to get another look at it and would probably see what I'm talking about.
I have a tough time drawing creatures, so I understand the learning curve involved. If it's your passion you gotta keep working that anatomy!
Zomg everyone is calling this a bargain bin, target"ish" or walmart"ish" shirt, I'm so surprised that I actually fell out of my chair then threw my computer out the window! Keep it up intelligent shirt bashing art connoisseurs! Its just too bad Teefury has no clue about business, if they just hired all you people, they would make the absolute cream of the crop, #1 out of 1203183490782395872348957389 million shirts ever made, every single day of the week.
Off topic- i was browsing target online and saw this
was this shirt on teefury?
How is Target able to sell a TeeFury collabo shirt?? My brain is melting.
I know artists' can reprint their stuff at later dates, which is awesome and fine. BUT having a TeeFury branded collabo available by a chain retail defeats the purpose of this site.

What the bloody hell are you talking about? No one said that. If anything people were miffed about the Omnibus tee being available at Target.
I'll agree with the artist needing to hone her anatomy skills. Proportions seem out of whack. The talent is obviously there though. If you can nail down how you're viewing the anatomy you'll be rockin then. :D Don't stop though cause you almost got it down and you definitely have the talent. Geez I feel like a judge on one of those sh.it Fox reality contest shows. o_0
@Soccerfun88 - thanks for giving me a heads up about the thread. I just went back and read it. I must have slept on that one.
I have been a HUGE fan of this site since day one. I rep it to many many people I interact with. And I will continue to do so. My only concern is the tagline, "After today, it will be gone FOREVER." There should be an asterisk there noting, "*Or until available at Target."
As for the t-shirt today, congrats Tara on having your shirt selected for TeeFury. Keep refining your approach/composition and I wish you continued success.
WTF? We finally get a dragon shirt, with an artist that (by the images in their portfolio) is talented, AND TEEFURY RUINS IT. I'm really starting to lose faith in the developers ability to distinguish a good t-shirt from a bad one.
Why has every T in the last several days had a graphic representation of a different animal. This is getting boring, I'd like to see something new, unique.
Man. I'm glad that the community here isn't one I live in. I wouldn't be able to stand all the hate.
As it is, I have to live in a pretty mediocre community and loved coming here meeting people interested in fun, T-Shirt art for a change of pace and good old fashioned Happy Happy.
Not over the top, acid spewing FockNots.
My comment seems to have disappeared... Yes, this artist is talented, but the artwork calls to mind something bordering on furry/anthropomorphic art. Do not want.
Dang it I just bought a shirt!!!! I love Dragons, anything Dragon normally winds its way into my house. Both my husband and I collect Dragons and have tons of them lurking around in the house in corners or shelves. Heck my cat uses part of one of our dragon statues as a pillow! However, I LOVE the green dragon on the side. IF that were the shirt being sold, I wouldn't let anything stop me. (And if work doesn't like me wearing dragon shirts that be just too bad!)
As for the negativity, Dragons have long provoked such. Both good and bad. I guess it is human nature to love what they fear...or fear what they love? Don't get me started...PLEASE.
Wow. Im not liking this target link myself. Ive been buying manyish shirts from this site for the "one of a kind" shirt and supporting thriving artists. Everyone loves seeing their shirts sold. I can understand an artist reselling a particular piece but I dont think collaboration shirts or shirts with the TeeFury logo should be anywhere but at TeeFury. Just today I got my SuperFly shirt. I cant wait to throw it on.
Like i said earlier i like wearing shirts that get peoples attention. Bums them out when i tell them they cant get one, but i tell them the site and what the deal is and they seem to dig it. I hope i've brought business because this site is sweet and i always look forward to see what the new day brings!!
BubbaNush said: I can understand an artist reselling a particular piece but I dont think collaboration shirts or shirts with the TeeFury logo should be anywhere but at TeeFury.
Don't worry, we agree :) As stated in the thread about Target earlier, the collab tee was included in the sale group in error (there was some miscommunication early on, and the mistake wasn't caught until it was too late). Only 180 copies of that design were produced for Now & Zen, so it remains very limited edition and the resulting profits were donated to charity.
I think I'll skip that. TeeFury nearly got it's first hat-trick after my buying the shirts from yesterday and the day before, but this is a bit too generic "ooh look at me I've got a black shirt with a mean dragon on it" - or 'spiral direct' as I call it after one of the main progenitors of that style.
Hopefully tomorrow will see a return of the wry humour like the designs that sold me instantly the last two days.
Yeah Fuzzy i agree. If there was a teefury town. Lotta people would wind up dead. But i must say i like the honesty of it all. Not afraid to speak and I'll say to all of the artists and todays artist Tara, to be an artist in the public eye you gotta be able to take on the criticism and build from it. Maybe its something you didnt see. Theres always criticism. My mom's an art teacher and i got countless friends in some form of art school. They always want me to tell them what i don't like or whats wrong. They don't wanna hear it looks sweet every time well most of the time maybe. Can't be perfect everyones different. And an artists work i don't think is ever perfect in their eyes
Obviously, I don't have the graphic art and skills as some of you posters. I just buy shirts I like. I don't care if it is supposedly "geeky" or "nerdy", I LOVE Dragons! I saw the shirt, loved it, ordered it.
Did I notice the red? Yes, but I thought it was a great for making the Ice Dragon pop more on the black shirt. I did like the other poster's idea that since it was an Ice Dragon, blue would be more appropriate. I think Tara Potts did a great job and I would LOVE the Phoenix design on the right. GREAT JOB! I can't wait to get it and wear it.

Also, looking through the portfolio, there's some real anatomy and stiffness issues here and there. The perspective from snout/brow is often very skewed. You have nice detail, but it doesn't work unless your basic structures are down.
Also, I'd say a lot of the artwork (aside from the eagle/phoenix) only has shading in the details (scales, etc) and no larger shape or structure shading making it super flat.

I think this is a good example of constructive critisism. In general i feel some of the comments have a little bit too much emotion behind them and we all just need to chill cuz it's a tee shirt and it'll be gone in 24 hours anyway

:( I try to be as constructive as I can, for a non-artist. Because I don't really know about technique, the only criticism I can give is from my gut reactions to things.
Have to agree with the majority of the posts here, this is a poor t-shirt design. Technically the art is great, but the flourishes around the dragon just don't look very interesting, especially where it runs over the chest/other part of the dragon.
I just looked at this again and the brow to nose line is horribly, HORRIBLY, off. Sorry for being so rude, but the nose makes an unnatural, and impossible turn to the right from the forehead.

Hope you R havin a good one.
I like dnd. Most people think its for nerds but its just for people who will take the time to learn and the game. Dnd is definatly not just for geeks. I'm as far as possible from being a geek and I like dnd. But as for the t-shirt, I think the dragon is cool and all, but its just not scary enuf. (sorry for all the miss-spellings, I can't spell for charmeleon)
Gotta laugh at least once a day.. One good laugh makes the day better.the height and depth of the laugh is what matters. How much does one laugh overcome?
My son's shirt came today and was he ever happy with it! It looks gorgeous and really 'pops'! Some here complained that the red design "didn't make sense", but as a graphic designer myself I knew what the designer was going for with it and the red really makes this dragon stand out on the shirt. Bravo to Tara for the wonderful design, and bravo to TeeFury for the excellent printing job!
Words from jimiyo: Back in the 80's D&D became really popular. Parents back then became very frightened of what we now call "Imagination." They fell prey to television movies that portrayed kids who played D&D as mentally ill and in general having bad body odor. I lived through it. I bought my first D&D beginners set with my own lunch money, and since, I've loved dragons. It's all I drew for several years along with, secretly at the time, horribly rendered nude women. (It's fine art, Im not a pervert!) Anyways, back to the shirt. Dragons, despite the underlying stigma of nerdiness, are still radically awesome. I'd be proud to wear one. It's cool to be nerdy and eclectic. Next week, wolf shirts.
Tell us about yourself and your art: I've been interested in artwork since I was young and I have always been inspired by the monsters, creatures and robots of the toys and cartoons of my youth in the 80's- Transformers, TMNT, Thundercats, Godzilla, Voltron, and the like. I've been into ink drawings, acrylic paintings and sculpture for most of my life. For the past 10 years or so I have gotten into the realm of digital artwork and Photoshop is my favorite. I usually either sketch a rough drawing on scratch paper, scan it in and paint it in photoshop, or sometimes I just sketch directly into photoshop. I use a Wacom Intuos 3 tablet.
What's a day in the life of Tara Potts like? During the workweek, I drag myself out of bed and head off to the footwear company I work at to digitally color and render flip flops and fluffy slippers all the live long day. Upon returning home I try to erase those memories by drawing and painting lots of beasties with horns, claws, scales, spikes, fangs and what have you. I occasionally like to get some gaming in on my PS2, and I enjoy nature photography as a side hobby on the weekends sometimes.
Where would you like to see yourself in 5 years with your art career or other? I'd like to be doing some sort of illustration job with some conceptual work. I think designing characters and elements for video games would be a fun job, but really any sort of design job where I can be creative and have some variety in my work would be fantastic.
Any advice for aspiring artists? On the employment end- try to learn as much about digital artwork, layout and web design programs as you can. Not only will it keep a paycheck coming in, it will help you in your own artwork as well. When I started college I had no idea this technology would become this big a part of my life- now I use it everyday. For personal art pursuits- never let the passion die. There are many people who only create artwork if it's part of their job. Unfortunately when you work full time it's easy for all your time to devoured by the job, but when you are an artist I think it's important that some of your talents remain yours to enjoy.
Any shout outs? To my mother for always supporting me in all my artistic endeavors.

ericawheelan said: Today though, what I want from TeeFury is a shirt that will make people ask "what the 'ell are you wearing?!?"
Dragons don't do that.
Thats exactly what I'm looking for! I love when I tell people good luck finding one when they ask where I got it. They usually don't know to respond

you will pay for this!
thestraysaid 143 weeks ago
But that's not a bad thing right? Because after all, what you want and what someone else wants from a Teefury shirt can and will be two completely different things. So a shirt with a Dragon may not appeal to you, it may be too 99 or not enough "what the 'ell are you wearing?!?" for your taste, but that's okay, there will be more shirts! Yay!

I know artists' can reprint their stuff at later dates, which is awesome and fine. BUT having a TeeFury branded collabo available by a chain retail defeats the purpose of this site.

There were like... two people who said anything along those lines.

Geez I feel like a judge on one of those sh.it Fox reality contest shows. o_0

As it is, I have to live in a pretty mediocre community and loved coming here meeting people interested in fun, T-Shirt art for a change of pace and good old fashioned Happy Happy.
Not over the top, acid spewing FockNots.

As for the negativity, Dragons have long provoked such. Both good and bad. I guess it is human nature to love what they fear...or fear what they love? Don't get me started...PLEASE.

Like i said earlier i like wearing shirts that get peoples attention. Bums them out when i tell them they cant get one, but i tell them the site and what the deal is and they seem to dig it. I hope i've brought business because this site is sweet and i always look forward to see what the new day brings!!
MJsaid 143 weeks ago
Don't worry, we agree :) As stated in the thread about Target earlier, the collab tee was included in the sale group in error (there was some miscommunication early on, and the mistake wasn't caught until it was too late). Only 180 copies of that design were produced for Now & Zen, so it remains very limited edition and the resulting profits were donated to charity.

I feel like I could get this at any store that sells tees with prints.
Dragons + tribal junk is a losing combination imho.
stablercakesaid 143 weeks ago
Also, I'd say a lot of the artwork (aside from the eagle/phoenix) only has shading in the details (scales, etc) and no larger shape or structure shading making it super flat.
steveomacsaid 143 weeks ago
I think this is a good example of constructive critisism. In general i feel some of the comments have a little bit too much emotion behind them and we all just need to chill cuz it's a tee shirt and it'll be gone in 24 hours anyway
Kimoppisaid 143 weeks ago
:( I try to be as constructive as I can, for a non-artist. Because I don't really know about technique, the only criticism I can give is from my gut reactions to things.
