Kyle, lay off the accusatory tone. It's okay to say you think there are too many shirts about gingerbread (or skulls, or animals, or whatever), it isn't okay to act like it's some kind of plagiarism.

So the fox broke his legs but didn't eat him? Maybe.... it's a trap!! He injured one gingerman so the other would come to help him. Now Mr. Fox can devour both at the same time!

  • happy noodlesaid 131 weeks ago

Ahhhh yes. This is exactly what teefury and most other tee-sites need more of. It's a nicely rendered, simple illustration. It's a clever concept. And, this is a big one here, it does not take up my entire freakin' chest! People just don't embrace the "less is more" philosophy enough.

    Well done.
  • indieviksaid 131 weeks ago

Kyle, I agree that not submitting doesn't mean you can't criticize; however, I think you could stand to chill out a bit (ok, a lot).

I really like this design. Good shirt color, well-drawn for its style, and it really is quite funny. I only wish it were a little bigger on the shirt.
  • happy noodlesaid 131 weeks ago

I see her as doing the "smuuuuuurf you fox!!! daaaamn yooooooouuuu!!!!!"

And maybe the fox was just in the mood for a little thigh meat... or thigh cookie I should say... and he left the rest of him there for a little snack later.
  • BDParmersaid 131 weeks ago

There have been plenty of shirts in the past MONTHS with subjects other than fish/skulls/birds - obviously the current design out of your "dis-likable" category.

Has the site had nothing worth buying, or nothing worth traci21g's money? It seems that many shirts sell each day. This site has something worth buying everyday. When you go into a store in the mall and out of 100 shirts, you purchase only one, do you say, "Man... this store has nothing worth buying?" If this website has one shirt every FIVE months that is perfect for your personal tastes, be happy - it is as good as any store in the mall.

KyleMittskus - Your opinion is great. Your method of sharing it is annoying.

I don't wanna get into the discussion of the legs and pawprints thing. It looks pretty straightforward. It could have been tire marks or nike footprints for all I cared. Gingerbread men's plight knows no end...

However the Mario print on the right is MASSIVE. It's AWESOME.

The idea isn't bad but I don't get why the fox ran over his legs with a motorcycle??? Am I missing something?
  • Sirknifesalotsaid 131 weeks ago

Yeah the shirt is a little empty. A little more effort could've been implemented on the shirt as to what was going on. Like a fox driving off on a motorcycle or something. Just my 2 cents.
  • Sirknifesalotsaid 131 weeks ago

Oh and I like the Mario on the side. Would be funny to see the same thing done with Mario eating a frog and then turning into the Frog suit Mario. :D
  • tiggyvgsaid 131 weeks ago

  • Okklesaid 131 weeks ago

I like the emptyness, a design doesn't have to cover the whole shirt. Less is more!

I'm not so keen on the general idea, although it's done differently and the addition of the fox's footprints is very clever but the overall idea isn't that original and it just reminds me too much of Shrek.

Though a nice style and well done. I hope we get more tees from this designer in the future!

    my goodness.
just because a shirt isn't your cup of tea doesn't mean everyone's got to rip it apart. a lot of the shirts here are not my style but i really enjoy checking them out every day and enjoying the design.

it's a fox because of the story "the gingerbread man"

also i think it's a cute design, i think part of the reason people feel it may be getting lost is the dark chocolate shirt. it matches mono chromatically but i feel it would look more iconic and less christmas'y feeling for some reason, if it were on a different color. i'm feeling light blue for some reason, but really anything lighter than this dark chocolate.

it's not for me but it's a fun design and i'm really happy to see teefury branching out with different designs!
also you know everyone digs your art, cause everyone's lovin on your mario shirt ;)

Kyle, I think lunartan understands the context just fine. Ready made a design based on his interpretation of The Gingerbread Man fable, and other artists have interpreted that story in other ways. To some people this take feels fresh, to others it does not.

Every idea is an old idea in someone's eyes ;) Personally, I've seen way more takes on Red Riding Hood than this fairy tale (and more skulls, and animals, and illustrations of typewriters, and cartoon balloons...), so it wouldn't have occurred to me to consider this overdone. YMMV.
  • gath875said 131 weeks ago

Ok, I don't know where the dragon vs jet question came from, but it reminded me of the end of an old ps2 game, forget the name. You go through the whole game kickin butt on a dragon then a jet takes you down.

Anyway, love the pawprint idea on the shirt.

My argument is that this isn't an original take. It's exactly like the fairy tale. There is no modern twist (unless I'm missing it) and the fact that so many shirts are so similar to other shirts that exist is exactly why I check Teefury every single day. I don't need to like every shirt, and often don't. But, I do expect (and expect is disappearing and becoming hopeless hope) originality. It's not that I don't like this shirt or this artist; it's that this is not a new interpretation and I think that this idea of broken or eaten gingerbread men is overdone, just like dragons and skulls, etc. Can skulls be done in a new way? Of course! And I come here hoping to see one of the original takes, like that castle/maze/skull shirt. Castles? Been done. Mazes? Been done. Skulls? Been done. Amalgamating all of them into one shirt, nothing I've seen.

And comparing this cliche idea to other cliche ideas and saying, "Well those are worse!" is a weak argument. (All of this is my personal opinion, of course).

    MJsaid 131 weeks ago

I understand where you're coming from, but at the same time I've never seen a shirt that is true to the fairy tale, with a fox catching the gingerbread man. If they do exist, they're new to me. I also enjoy the revenge aspect, which I hadn't seen previously.

I'm not saying that there can only be one cliche idea and that as a result everything else is less cliche. I'm asking where the line is drawn, and suggesting that for many people (myself included), gingerbread is pretty far outside what I consider cliche. But of course that's going to vary a lot from person to person.

Gingerbread men are a bit of an icon - and part of their appeal is that they're all the same (the phrase "cookie-cutter" comes to mind).

I've not seen the subject attacked quite like this before, and I kind of like it :)

    (Gonna pass this time though)
  • shiiba_artsaid 131 weeks ago

I have to agree that the paw prints do not really fit the concept all that well. Perhaps better to have a large human hand/arm reaching over either shoulder as if making a grab for the cookie(s)? I do enjoy the fun whimsical design though.

I agree with BDparmer. You cant like every shirt. I buy alot of shirts from here (i have yet to submit my own designs.. Dont worry..
