The combination of the two characters would be translated as "the ties of friendship," which the artist has cleverly written out as the vertical line separating the two figures.
The red characters on the olive really pop out which looks pretty groovy but I happen to sit on the side of the fence that is hesitant to sport something in Kanji (or is it another scteefurycopy?) -despite knowing what this particular set means...
This shirt isn't stereotypical at all. Its a new concept as far as I know. How many themed shirts like this do you see with friendship or anything like that? I like it. I'm definitely grabbing this one.
Not thumb wrestling. Their thumbs are cut and pressing on each other's thumb when the blood is running. That's the way to swear for your friendship with each other in the culture.
The design and idea is really cool. Appreciate the artist being inspired by his own culture and incorporating his root into the design.
Another instance where I'd like to see the finished shirt. The guy's coloring looks like the only thing you can see is the red characters [which actually would look cool on their own]...
Eh, I dunno. Probably gonna pass. Not bad though, not bad at all.
Hahaha, I know, seems like every day I have SOMETHING NEGATIVE to say about the shirt. Annoyingly (for myself and others) I have really specific tastes. :\
@scmcverry
I understand where the inspiration comes from and I applaud him for sticking to his roots, but as an American taking things at face value, I feel like I've seen shirts of this type before. I'm not saying it's not legitimate art, it is, I'm just saying in my experience it's a little played out.
Everyone has specific tastes :) The day one tee pleases everyone is the day... Jesuzilla walk the earth!
I do like the characters, but being asian myself (specific case in point), I don't really like to wear mandarin characters. And yeah the guys colours are reaaaaally difficult to make out.
I'm loving the variety in styles around here parts though, yay :)
Nice design. I'll see if I want to get this. I already have a Japan flavored shirt from this site "Lord of Cats" but maybe a Chinese one might fit into the collection.
Though the grimacing soldiers embraced through the hands of friendship is somewhat a new image for me. I wouldn't have expected that as a sign of friendship.
Very good idea. I'll see if my mom likes it so she can buy it for me lol.
@laurelling: That sounds like a really great way to spread AIDS.
Oh, but yeah, shirt... agree that Asian theme is old, but like the theme of friendship. Colors are a bit to muddy for me, though. I like some of his other works - second on the side would be a nice wall hanging. Fourth would be a freaking awesome shirt.
They are not samurai. They are chinese warriors. They are not holding nunchucks. They are holding swords with tassles at the end. There are two chinese characters, the large one on the left means love and the large one on the right means brotherhood. They are holding hands to signify these two meanings.
The design is awesome, but I need to agree with Fuzzy on the color scheme.
I can't stand military green. Even if the design was absolutely amazing, I just couldn't buy it if it was on that green...
Love the colors. Love the design. Would have bought for sure but not really into hand-holding samurais even though I absolutely understand the meaning behind it is platonic. Just a bit much for this hetero. LOL
Love the design!! I have a stupid question to ask so please be patient with me cause I'm new... Uh.. my brother wants to know how he can get some of his designs up?
Wow, is that men's shirt dark! Not sure on this one. Very different theme though. I find it amusing that people are critical of an "Asian" design conceived by a Chinese designer... Would you rather he he/she designed a shirt referencing pop culture or brandishing a skull?
That Mao design is intriguing. Can anyone tell me what the characters mean? I could sure confuse the pokemon out of people by wearing that one (assuming the caption is critical of him).
"That Mao design is intriguing. Can anyone tell me what the characters mean? I could sure confuse the pokemon out of people by wearing that one (assuming the caption is critical of him)."
The characters on that design translate to "long live."
All my understanding/explanation is based on my cultural root and I believe that's where the artist got it from. If I'm assuming it right, the artist was inspired by one of our historical story about Chinese warlords called "San Guo Yan Yi". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Guo_Yan_Yi
The flood of idiots that come out every single night astounds me. Same stupid walmart or "not original" bologna. Or maybe I'm just looking through the same exact page of comments every single night? Because I see no diversity in what people are saying, it never changes, and never will. If you are going to be negative, or going to try to be the cool hater who must see something we all missed, then do it in an original way. Also, everything Asian, no matter how different will look the same to you, if you were Asian you'd see the differences in art. Guarantee you the things you like, Asians would see repetitive, stereotypical uninspiring art, just the same as you do theirs.
I could never get tired if Asian inspired art. I'm covered with it. :D
I love it. I collect it. It's all over my house [With lots of many other types of art I'm interested in].
I hate blank walls. That reminds me. Time to go hunting for frames
and get some of this stuff put up on the walls!

Words from jimiyo: Incredible new world isn't it? Those of us who were introduced to the internet in our late teenage years or later remember what it was like when other countries of the world were only headlines in the newspaper or major publications. Now with the internet, it is truly a global nation with an expansive and diverse set of cultures all melding into one.
Beatbeatwing hails from China, a mere North Pacific Ocean from Teefury headquarters. No biggie. A strong design, simple and clean, assumeably, the words mean something about friendship and not like, "Americans are big dumbheads and Brittany Spears is awesome." Regardless, Regardless, it's a great design. I'd still wear it.
Tell us about this design: relationship between friend is important in Chinese culture. friend must support each other. Also, they can not betray each other. What's a day in the life of Cheung Cheuk Wing like? I grow up and live in Hong Kong(a big city in south CHINA) I am currently a graphic designer at a garment company. What is your process of creating an image like? mostly,i make artworks in illustrator
What would be your dream job? cafe owner (that cafe with a small art gallery), hope i can do this in future
What advice would you offer to aspiring designers? just try in different way/style to express the idea.

Artist has a really nice design sense, but I personally think super-Asian-inspired work is getting kind of tired.
i have to agree with everything you just said.
.... just noticed something though
is it just me or are they thumb wrestling?

I guess I just wish there were more cool designs repped by Asian designers that have nothing to do with Asian culture.
You're right though - concept is pretty new.

@ indievik and tP: those are not samurai. Those are Chinese warriors and not Japanese warlords. >

Though they remind me of the late late late Mongol ruler, Genghis Khan lol.
AirHendrixsaid 146 weeks ago
Aka the guy on the right would be highlighted in light orange or possible white with the same color for text.
Though maybe the red color scheme on both men make them unified as "friends".
I'll see if I want to purchase this one. Not bad, Teefury. Nice job on curating this.
