I'm all for drawing from ancient myth and all... but I don't think you can get more trite and cliche than Byakko vs Seiryuu when it comes to duality. There's nothing even unique about the composition: same old tiger against dragon stuff that's been around for so long. Oh, and it's so Ed Hardy I'm pissing Sailor Jerry Rum.
The stuff on the side, to the contrary, is great. Highly detailed Medusa head? Yes please.
naytally I'd agree except the I Ching on there is all wonky (the bars are all solid, which is highly imbalanced towards yang according to the teachings).
Or were you referencing the overall shape? It's much older than that.
Nice design. The ba gua (eight symbols) definitely should not have the Qian trigram (three unbroken lines) in multiple locations, north, south, northwest. Qian overload :P
But, Jimyo, with all due respect, you seem to be choosing work that is a little too similar to your own. Jimyo, you are an accomplished artist but I think you may need to broaden your hoizons as a curator.
Whats up with this new trend of calling a shirt a "walmart/pacsun/kmart" material. I've already counted 6 people saying the SAME EXACT thing. Do they think it makes people look at them as some kind of art expert as if they can see something most people can't?
Its so easy for ANYONE to just say that about ANY design, but the fact that after one person says it, everyone else does, is just beyond ridiculous and makes people look like followers.
sighhhh. I wish there was a day where we can vote on the next shirt.
Just like, one day.
I'm sure that there has been some amazing submissions that were totally ignored by TeeFury.
You can vote, over at woot, and look how well it does for them.... PFFFF bunch of monkeyfart everyday and yet people go wild over the simple cartoony 10 year old junk. This piece here though, is original. So what if its been done before, so hasn't EVERYTHING ELSE at one point or another. This is the artists own take, the dragon, the tiger... NEVER have seen them drawn EXACTLY like this before so it is original. You people will never be happy, ever, with anything in this life.... Just accept it.
Actually, it's because the imagery, composition, and style is something so overdone over the years, that it's seen on so many graphic tees in department stores that it can be called a "wallmart shirt."
tarnation, I'm pretty sure I saw a shirt in Target in their kid's section that was just this: a tiger facing off against a dragon over a ying yang. Except the shirt was blue.
@ironpen... at least I got the colors right then. Haha. Thanks for the comments/feedback all. The whole idea behind this design is because I wanted to do something from my background, which had meaning to me and also try my hands on something that I have not done before. Everything is hand drawn, even the texture was made out of watercolors on paper that i had drawn and scanned the digitally added in. Cheers peeps, keep the comments and feedback coming please.
I have to really disagree with curb1510 about FingRad choosing work like his own, I think he's pretty good at choosing a variety of different designs. I can't think ever printed on here that looks like his work (besides HIS work, haha).
The work is really well done, especially with the texturing. It's just well... plenty of other stuff along those lines out there with less exposure, right? Nobody ever gives poor old Genbu or Kirin any love.
Phillyzero- the designs on the side are other designs by the artist. Sometimes these are designs that have already been sold to other clients, sometimes they are available. It differs from day to day. But if you like something there, let us know- we definitely take these things into consideration :)
Apparently I don't spend enough time at Target, Wal-Mart, JCPenny, Kohl's, PacSun, or any of those other chain stores... because I have no clue how any T-Shirt here looks like it could be bought at any particular kind of store.
If you haven't noticed, Wal-Mart's entire purpose is to make cheap knock offs of designs from other popular brands. OF COURSE things will eventually look Wal-Mart... If you guys haven't noticed, even Ed Hardy is starting to look very Wal-Mart these days.
I'm just really sick of hearing people say "It looks so ____ store" because who the tarnation cares where it came from. If you like it, buy it. If you don't like it, don't. I don't care what store something comes from... if I want it, I'll buy it.
All that being said... I like the colors and the separate design elements, but I don't really like them together the way they are. So today is not a shirt buying day for me.
But the monkey eating human brains is wicked funny.
it's so easy to just look at a design and dismiss it straight away as 'tired'. However, go back. Take a look at it again. This design is very different in many ways. The color here is different than what I'm used to seeing, and the expression on the faces of the characters are darker. I mean take a look at those textures, or the color bleeding, even the eyes of the dragon are sinister. This isn't a 'crank n' go' design that took 5 minutes to make, this is something that looks like took a great deal of time and energy. If it looks a little "Ed Hardy", then Audgier borrowed from Asia, and Asia had it first. I love it DownRodeo... beautiful work.
I also think that lately, TeeFury's community has been a little too harsh. Lighten up a little, every time I come here to take a look at what's the tee of the day.. I'm always expecting some snide remark. It's kinda sad.
This is a great design and i am getting it. Great great artwork. And i think teefury should consider to print your medusa, wicked monkey and the others design as well. It rocks! ;)
Wow, thanks a lot guys, I really appreciate the support. @PrinceFiyer0 @Darkstar, thanks guys, indeed, it did take quite a while to get the design and texture right. I kept going back and forth to get the right paint strokes for it, to keep it subtle yet noticeable. Thanks all, please, keep the feedback coming, good or not so good, I appreciate it all. :)
And what the tarnation is with all "looks like Walmart/Kohls/etc" comments people for some reason love to through around when its a shirt they don't like?
Really doesn't make any sense to me. At all.
And yeah, the first thing I thought of when I saw the shirt was Lost.
I like this shirt. The colors are great and the design is striking. I've never seen a shirt like this in a department store. I don't know what all these fussy old maid self-appointed art critics are whining about...

Tribal Armband? no! Get some real art. Seriously. That's so cliche and so 90's. IMO, I wouldn't waste that real estate with a tribal armband.

to everyone upset about the negative feedback, fuzzylogic is right. we're supposed to leave feedback, positive or negative. granted, the negative CAN be a little ugly. but kudos to the artist for taking it in stride!

Hello all, wanted to say my final round of thank you's before this disappears forever. First up, Jim.miyo. He does an excellent job curating here and is very fair as opposed to some recent opinions. He's handled everything professionally and added a human touch to that professionalism, which is sometimes a hard thing to do when you get about a gazillion e-mails. So big thanks to him.
Also, to everyone who got a tee, I really appreciate the support guys and gals. I'm just honestly happy to get my tee printed. I've taken all the comments into consideration and will use it to improve my next batch of works.
Lastly, anyone got contacts for the merch managers at Wallmart, Kohls, and so forth? Based on opinions here this design should be there, so let me know if you do.
Tell us about yourself: I’m a 30 year old web | apparel | graphic designer based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I’ve been freelancing for the past 3 years, and discovered that sitting in my boxers while designing websites and brochures can be quite fulfilling… at least until the cat comes and tries to sharpen his nails on my lap. What do you want Teefury fans to know? I’ve actually just started drawing again after a 11 year hiatus. So, I guess, it’s never too late to learn. I saw a dude once who painted with his mouth… [sorry about the music, I have no control over that.]
Do you own alot of shirts? If so, what's your favorite? Yes, and my absolute favorite is from Shirts & Destroy.
Do you have any interesting hobbies or tales of intrigue? Do tell! Well, I’m into street art as well, and run a website called F’kn Mayhem! so if you are into street art and stuff, check it out. I’ve been a total slacker lately, but my excuse is that I’ve been so bloody busy working.
Any shout outs? Jimiyo! [I just like shouting that, really!] No, seriously, Jimiyo for giving me this awesome opportunity to be the 1st Malaysian [I think] to be on Teefury AND just being a really great dude with his tips and pointers a while back. Seriously, huge thank you there :J! Also, Corefolio and Gaunty for their friendship, pointers and motivation to draw all the time, keeping me up till wee hours of the morning! My girl Shirley, for taking all my bullshit over the years and buying me coffee. And YO EMPTEERS of past and present! Oh, and don’t forget to pledge and save a turtles life.

@Jahimbo.... I already saved several of those, was planning on editing it and sending in. Man. I am just never quick enough...

Cheers peeps, and happy Teefurying! :)
