For the People
About the artistArt curated by
Words from jimiyo:
I own three cbass99 shirts. This will be four! I interact with alot of hispanic workers at the printer's so I'm really interested to see their take on it. The design certainly has a good inspiration (read on) and a widely palatable way of artistically expressing the inspiration.
Tell us the background of this design.
This piece was inspired by Zapata and is titled "For The People" because he stood up for the rights of his people. He was a realist with the goal of achieving political and economic emancipation of the peasants in southern Mexico, and leading them out of severe poverty. The art includes leaves found in my yard, political sayings from Zapata and traditional fall colors amongst an array of textures.
How would you describe your style?
I would say my style combines a collage style with a hand drawn influence. I like to mix and match different media to keep my art interesting. Sometimes people look at my work and think "gee, what is that." Those people need to take a look closer and piece together the parts. I'd like to think someone can look at my work an interpret there own meaning and/or gain some sort of insight from it. My best work is usually complex but a closer look reveals more of a hidden meaning.
If you could collaborate with anyone, who would you pick?
I'd say Josh Kenyon and Colby Nichols of Jolby (http://jolbyandfriends.com/work/apparel/)
They're very talented and push me to be a better artist. I told Josh the other day that when ever I see their work, it reminds me how much harder I have to work.
What historical figure do you most admire?
Probably Fred Flintstone. I mean he liked to bowl, play pool, lounge around the house, play golf and he had a huge gambling problem. His wife was hot and he could get a car going 30 mph with his bare feet.
If you weren't designing shirts, what would you be doing?
I always wanted to be an architect but the medical field is where it's at. They make a lot of money and get a lot of time off.
Do you prefer grizzly bears, polar bears or teddy bears?
Polar bears. They just look cool when they're swimming.
Detroit Lions vs. actual lions: who would win the battle?
I'd say actual lions just because the Detroit Lions have sucked for so many years.
Describe the last shirt you bought.
The last shirt I bought was urban animal v.2 by Fat-Mouse. The shirt is just well done, great placement and the colors look amazing on the tee.
What has been your favorite vacation or travel experience?
I don't get to travel a lot. Aruba was a great vacation, scuba diving in old sunken ships, drinking aruba-rebas unlimited and just relaxing. I don't have to much time for travel though someday I'd like to get lost in Europe somewhere.
