About the artist
A word form wotto: This design reminds me of the wonderful street paintings I see in books. I love how Santiago uses a natural colour pallette to conjure a unique sense of style. This tee is both handsome and pretty all at the same time. Welcome Santiago to the Fury arena.
First of all how did you enter the circle of awesome known as the Black Rock Collective?
Grayehound (Graye Smith) which is one of the artists who started the Black Rock invited me to join the BRC. Graye and I had worked for the same theatre in Orange County as graphic designers - not at the same time - but that's how I met him. It was a couple of years ago, I had just submitted my first threadless design (which was terrible...) Graye saw it, and got in touch about joining the BRC.
Tell us a little bit about your ‘BRC series’ design.
It's about dualism, I've noticed I work with that theme a lot. The title "A friendly conversation between good and evil" refers to the way I see things, not everything is black & white, I'm more of a gray area kind of guy.
Which BRC project has been the most interesting to you as an artist?
We had a group show in Chicago earlier this year, it was great to see some of the artists in the group break out of their comfort zone and work in different media.
Who is your favorite member of the BRC? (Don’t be shy, I’ll be asking all the others too ;)
This may sound like a b.s. answer, but there really isn't just one, overall it's a nice group, very supportive.
Which members of the BRC have you met?
I met Phil Tseng in California last year and met a few more at the Chicago show this year: Jared Stumpenhorst , Julia Sonmi Heglund, Priscilla Wilson, Justin White, Ross Zietz, Joe Van Wetering, Rachel Gottesman, Olly Moss. Graye Smith, but I had met him before I joined BRC.
Give us one piece of inside gossip on the BRC.
Just like in any other large group of people, there's going to be some drama sometimes... I don't get involved, but it's fun to watch :)
Do the BRC have a secret handshake, if so what is it?
It goes something like this http://bit.ly/87R8h
What’s next for the BRC?
I've heard rumors of a BRC card deck part deux
Which member of the BRC would you most like to collab with?
You're asking me to pick favorites again... how about this: I would like to do a live collab, on paper or canvas. I think it would be more rewarding than emailing files back and forth.
