Word from jimiyo:
I will save you from reading my broohaahaa. The interview and design are quality. Quality you have come to known to be provided from most awesome Nashvillain, Derrick Castle!
Tell us about this design:
This Design is obviously inspired by Mexican Folk Art; I wanted to create something that incorporated that as well as the “Traveling Snake Oil Salesman”. I’ve always been a big fan of the Circus Side Show art so you can kind of see that as well as many other influences in this design. I drew this out with pen & ink and created the shading using watercolors.
Tell us about yourself:
I’ve had a sorted history; I was born in the Appalachians mounts of Eastern Tennessee. My untimely birth forced my father to get a job with the local Circus Side Show selling his Sour Mash Elixir while my mother figured out how to raise a child. At the age of five, because of mounting financial issues and other hardships my father sold me off to some migrant workers passing through our village on their way back down to Mexico. Me and my new family lived in a small town named Paso Real de Chuipa where I worked with my new mother painting textiles. At the age of 13 I walked out of the Hotel we were living in and there was an old indian lady drying tortillas beside the pool, I asked her if I could have one of her tortillas. She seemed startled when she saw me and told me she saw the soul of her long lost love form America. She named me “El Lobo Estreñido” and sent me away without tortillas. I was so disappointed I left Mexico and found myself in Nashville Tennessee, pursuing a Country Music career.
PC or MAC?
I work on PC
Tell us a story on intrigue!
I don’t know what my most memorable experience would be? Maybe when I was sued by Bush Hog industries because I was performing under the name of “Bush Hog” and they said I was “tarnishing their brand name with my lyrical content and stage antics.” That was pretty cool!
What artists have influenced you?
I’ve had a lot of different Influences throughout the years, some artist that I have found noteworthy include Norman "Sailor Jerry" Collins, Art Chantry, Sheppard Fairy, and other more traditional artists like Hieronymus Bosch, Dali and just so many more. When I think about the things that inspire me to create art the most, I think of the mixed media approach that people like Art and Sheppard took. It’s more of a Graphic Design approach, reproducible artwork that can be spread to others. I think that’s why I like t-shirt design so much.
Do you own alot of shirts?
I do own a lot of shirts. Mostly my own shirts but I do have others, specifically Sailor Jerry, Jimiyo;J, various band shirts, other DBH shirts… just a lot of stuff.
