Don't deny yourself the pleasure of owning this shirt (and recieving suspicious stares from those around you)! This shirt can mean just about anything you want it to, but please don't purchase it for racist reasons!
The parody's style is one that has been done so frequently that it is an internet meme, and the idea has been carried out better in other instances. It is not silly enough to be funny nor is it sharp enough or sufficiently original to be effectively satirical.
And, although this is a stylistic complaint, I rather dislike how much awkward contrast there is between the top edge of the graphic and the T-shirt's color.
I'm with Dusty. I don't get satire or funny from this, just bandwagoning. And I have no desire to wear the decaying zombie corpse of a president who has thus far given me little reason to dislike him.
Someone -- Easy solution to your problem: learn jiu-jitsu. Then you can merely beat up anybody who picks a fight with you over the shirt.
Dusty Slumber -- Awwwwww.
itsbeth -- you don't have to hate someone to want to wear their decaying zombie corpse. Besides, it's really Obama's undead twin brother, and you would have hated him if you'd met him. Trust me. "Brains" was his campaign slogan, which was the reason you didn't hear much about him. "Hope" and "Change" were much more inspirational.
Thanks so much for all the comments, everyone! Keep 'em comin (even if you're going to be pathetically nitpicky)!
Oh, and as for the "bandwagoning" thing... that's sort of the whole point.
It was birthed from a desire to lampoon the tide of lame parodies of the infamous "Hope" poster. Most everyone else was using crappily photoshop-filtered pictures for their parodies and insisted on using some variation of a rhyme with "Hope". I wanted to run in the opposite direction and actually take the time to draw (not trace) a parody image and anti-rhyme. There are many meanings behind the choice of image and word: I like zombies is the simplest, but there was (and is) a lot of desperate messiah/hero worship going on which I thought I'd poke at, as well as skewering the whole appropriation art miasma.
The image itself was created several months ago (check my blog if ya don't believe me). I can't help it if Jimiyo was late jumping on the bandwagon and getting this thing made... ;)
I bought it. I think it's hilarious. I agree that this is a parody that has been done many, many times but not as *effectively* as this in most cases IMO. I liked this one a lot because it has an original direction in its parody. That's what I think, anyway.
Love zombies hate political BS!!! Zombies rule no ones safe get over it. That said popmonkey please don't stop there are so many others that need to be Zombified. I'ld say George W. but that would be redundent. Going back to your last post, speaking of the messiah I'm thinking a line of religious zombies would be awesome.
Since I only buy t-shirt that are black with skulls or ones where the male and female shirts come in different colors I'm not sure if I will buy this one :P
AWESOME!!!! Great work Pop-Monkey!!!! I HOPE it causes people to think a little more!!! Doesn't seem like many people are these days. I'm going to max out my credit card on this one and HOPE for a bail-out!!!!! My Favorite Teefury yet!!! HOPE it doesn't make anyone FURYous!!!! HOPE this is the best seller ever!!!! Zombama Brains Rules!!!
I find this shirt funny, in any non racial context you put it in.
As for the bandwagon, the one I work with would not get the joke and crucify me for wearing it. :( I still love it though.
Honestly I agree with lilstephy, it's appropriately hilarious for Bush but considering Obama made me respect democracy again it just doesn't make the joke. And why would anyone interpret this as racist? Also what missteps? Obama was given a sh*t filled mess that the reckless spending and mindless complete disregard for human life that is George Bush Administration and you call in his first two months in office, missteps? So, yea, if this was Bush it'd put more food on your family.
Although, the art is really well done to me, congrats!
this is awesome. I saw it on the sneak peak e-mail and I had to get one. I think that the those preview e-mails are a great idea. I wouldn't of thought to check today if it wasn't for the the e-mail. Way to go TeeFury team.
Arrow -- you really don't see why anyone would interpret a giant image of a decaying black man's corpse on a t-shirt as potentially racist? You need to get out and visit the wonderful citizens of this planet more often. Here in beautiful North Carolina, I'm fairly surrounded with folks who would probably like to see the man lynched, and I may get some cheers when I wear my shirt around town due to them misinterpreting the image as some sort of wish-fulfillment fantasy. That should be interesting -- trying to explain this shirt to that crowd...
And please, Obama has made absolutely NO misteps (the DVD gift set is certainly a foul-up in my book, though it's a diplomatic head-slapper rather than a policy error)? Every president does, and there are plenty of valid arguments that he's done just that. Every president has opponents on the other side who disagree with their policies and predict doom should they be carried out. Besides, the description says its a commentary "about rabid Obama fan-mania COUPLED with his missteps as a new leader". It's about the clash of the two. It really should have read "perceived missteps", anyway (that's what I intended), but regardless, I'm not interested in hearing cheerleading for Obama or hating against him. That's not what this is about.
I understand what you're saying though, but I'm not trying to make any real governmental political points with any of this -- it's all in fun. Thanks for the compliment/congrats!
As art with a political message I hate it. I just generally dislike satirical political art as I see it as a pretentious way to laugh at others and disregard the idea that maybe you have that stupid quality in yourself too.
But as art with little political meaning, I love it! Zombies are sweet, and brains are sweet. And I love the detail of the "Z" button.
I'm not easily offended, but as someone who voted for Obama, I find this shirt disappointing, somewhat offensive, and just all-out in bad taste. IMO, only NObama-ians would buy this shirt. I am proud of our President and would rather show my support for him than advocate any disapproval as this shirt portrays.
On another note, the colors used on the campaign poster this shirt parodies, were a brilliant choice.
When I get home from work today, I will buy this. Thank you, PopMonkey, for being an artist who has no political brainwashing to make fun of either side. . . But I am, as kittykatty put it, a NObama person. . . so you cant judge off of me.
KittyKatty, I voted for Obama, too! Trust me, there was no disapproval of the man or his policies intended with this image. It's about the mania and the hero-worship surrounding the man (often times placing him on a pedestal I don't believe any man should be placed on), not the man himself.
I understand your distaste for it, though -- it certainly isn't for everyone.
I don't really see what the problem is. If some one wanted to draw me as a zombie and make a t-shirt out of it, that would be cool. I'll be buying this shirt simply because I like zombies...... Great work Pop-Monkey.
I think that is a little harsh, Jackal... I don't like the guy, but Anti-Christ is a bit of a stretch. That being said, I'm sure PopMonkey is still happy you bought 3 lol
(generic angry political statement concerning my feelings being hurt and my crazy love/lust for a politician who's the same as every other politician ever)
great work man, great art, great satire. people can read whatever they want into anything. (IE the floating plastic bag in American Beauty)
and that's part of the fun eh?
will buy!
im going to buy this shirt for all the reasons you dont want me to. i am a diehardconservativeamericanobamahater. i hope this does not upset you [too much]. youre still going to get royalties, so whats it matter, right?
didn't even vote for the guy but i want the hell outta this shirt! Popmonkey use my $3 to buy your ass a beer! You deserve it after awesomeness such as this!
come on who doesn't like to sport some zombie wear every now and then?!?!?!
so i reiterate my original point: freakin' sweet!
I hope all you haters choke and die drinking that hateraid so Zombama can come eat your BRAINS!!!
Undertow976...I'm just going to go out on a limb here and say that Jackal is purely trolling.
Anyways. Not a huge fan of the shirt. I mean, it's well done, and I do like the "Z" pin, but I couldn't see myself wearing it ever. Kinda too gross for me. But it seems like you're doing extremely well with sales, so no worries, right?
Hey, you can hate Obama for his politics all you want, just please don't buy one if you hate him cuz you're a racist -- that's all I ask.
Mentalpatient -- You should ride around with the mailman all day instead of sitting on the mailbox. Your ass wouldn't be so sore, and you'd have someone to talk to.
Jaysea -- I will be consuming several beers tonight in celebration. Thanks!
JoshuaBelanger -- you get it, man. That's what it's about.
I knew adding those flies would pay off.
Thanks so much to everybody, again for the comments, praises, and purchases. I am honored, thrilled and totally stunned to have created the record-smashing design thus far. I certainly didn't expect that, especially since I'd thought (like some of you) that the date of expiration on a design like this had sort of passed.
Personally, I think this shirt is awesome, one for the parody, the other for my love for zombies. I don't think the shirt is racist, and I don't think it's a direct stab at Obama for anything. People are just so KHAAAAAAAN touchy they get offended by the littlest things.
Congrats on the sales Pop-Monkey, I like the commentary on the shirt design :p
"just please don't buy one if you hate him cuz you're a racist -- that's all I ask." word... but unfortunately it comes with the territory. i have a lot to say so i'm just gonna stop there.
I'd LOOOOVE to get this. But I can picture some ignorant jerk down my street screaming at me saying "YO! Thas racist!". Thus, a gang fight would ensue. Leaving me to defend my $9 ZOMBAMA tee.
Awesome thought though. I encourage anyone living outside of the inner city to purchase this.
1. It is satire, not necessarily of a political figure but of a famous poster by Shepard Fairey.
2. It has a zombie. Who doesn't like a good zombie tee now and then?
3. It is well designed. A golden star to Popmonkey for good design.
Reasons why this shirt is BAD
1. It's a trite perversion of an American classic image. Even though it became famous swimmingly fast.
2. Some could, if Rikered, consider it a anti presidential shirt.
3. Anyone who thinks that this shirt is a racist remark, or believes that it could be racist, is a racist. And, also has a official IQ of 3 because they have not a clue what the Spock Racism is or even means. So basically this shirt could be considered racist if your an idiot.
In Closing
I'll Leave you all to decide whether or not it is a good shirt. I will say this though... Popmonkey, it sounds like you have made this shirt for all the right reasons based on some of your explanations in your comments above.
I've been waiting for this shirt since a little bird told me about it a couple days ago. The Obama-mania during the last bit of the election and after it was straight up creepy. I may as well of been watching a Mussolini rally. I do hope he has a positive impact on the country more than just making the trains run on time.
LOVE OBAMA! love this shirt cuz it is funny... if people think it is racist they need more sleep or something. just bought it and cant wait to everyone i know to get their reactions. Good job Pop-Monkey quiet down haterz! haha :)
I saw this shirt on DBH a while ago (or was it your portfolio? I can't exactly remember now), and when the little birdy told me it was gonna be on sale here, I totally started fangirling. xD I love the concept of this shirt, and I can't help but break my serious budgeting to get it.
I just wanted to say that I'm an Obama supporter/Shepard Fairey fan/horror fan and I just fell absolutely in love with the shirt! I get why you made this shirt and that's the reason why I had to buy it. Congrats on making a fun shirt that is well done artistically!
ok i absolutely love this shirt, great design, i have read just about every single comment to this shirt and as an Obama supporter, i am in a dilemma whether to get this shirt. i have gotten in many arguments with family members (who are hardcore republicans) about Obama. please show me other sides to this beautiful piece of art!
Nubefo life -- I don't think I can say anything that hasn't already been said. You either like it and want the shirt, or you don't. If you don't want to argue with your family, then don't wear the shirt around them -- maybe they'd like one for themselves. I don't know you, and I feel odd seriously trying to persuade someone to embrace a piece of my work any more than I already have. You may just be taking the whole thing too seriously, and if your family would have a major problem with you wearing it, then they might be as well.
well nubefolife, the way i see it with this design, given all the comments here, you can see it in two ways: as an anti-obama person that wouldn't mind seeing obama zombified, or the pro-obama person that understands the awesomeness of zombies. (mixing zombies with anything is great)
so in my eyes wearing this shirt around your republican family members would make them feel happy that you are wearing an undead image of their hated president and would make you and other democrats feel happy that you are wearing a zombified image of our president (because it's awesome). I think it's win-win.
nubefolife - just buy the the shirt. If they say anything, remind them that it's a tshirt. Then say, "It's not like I took a dump on the floor." THEN, drop your pants and poop on the floor. They'll never question your fashion direction ever again.
also - I've been in a few political arguments with my family, too. My dad actually punched me because we couldn't agree on politics. He's all "I'm voting Republican - McCain is neat!" and then I'm like,"You should vote Repooplican. I'm a DemoVoyager and I just took a dump on your couch!" Then he punched me because he hates democrats and bad puns. And people that poop on his couch.
bad points #3 makes me think of all those resident evil 5 racism news reports. black people can be zombies too, dang it! it's an all inclusive...uh..condition? lifestyle? er...whatever you would call zombie-ism.
Nubefolife: This shirt can be interpreted in multiple ways, as has been demonstrated by the opinions of others here. If your family is so judgmental and pugnacious that a T-shirt incites a free-for-all melee, simply give them an interpretation of the shirt that coincides with their views when it becomes a subject of discussion.
How about this; it's a great anti-political, if I see one more Obey-esque design touting the second coming of the great Obamessiah, I'll friggin puke shirt. Nothing more than a well done funny ass shirt!
Great job Pop-Monkey!! I got mine and when the liberal socialists start rounding up the heathens that dare to poke fun at his holiness, I'll wear it... well, actually I'll probably turn you in to save my hide, but KHAAAAAAAN good job man!!
nubefolife...you aren't helping your party affiliation's image any. ; ) Before someone says the same about me...I don't consider myself a republican by current "standards". Maybe you should listen to your family rather than your awesome college friends who gobble up the liberal BS spewed forth by many in "education". Drop the super-star image for a minute and consider just a few of his policies and their effect on our country. (Not that dubya was much better in a sense.) Props to the artist for recognizing the super-star / god-like image / following, while being a supporter.
Just purchased this awesome shirt! I wish there was a shirt like this for EVERY president since they've all been scumbags since the time of George Washington (whiskey rebellion). I'd buy the whole set!
I like the message that the artist is trying to get across, the stupidity of hero worship. People put so much stock in the people they vote for, hoping they can make their lives better. People need to realize, it's up to YOU to make your own life better. Stop following this cult of personality (on both sides of the isle) and do something for yourself. I'll vote for the first guy that says "Vote for me and I'll leave you alone."
I'm an unmitigated Obama lover, however, I like to think that i recognize his faults and I'm not the least bit afraid of wearing this shirt among liberals, or just to provoke arguments with my more conservative friends.
I really am touched and pleased at the number of you who really do get it. You've perfectly exemplefied what I meant by "there are many possible meanings and interpretations of this design".
This was my first shirt up at Teefury, and I hope there will be more (although I doubt I could replicate the runaway success that ZOMBAMA has been). I do have a shirt idea for President Taft that might please a bunch of you. Regardless, I don't think I'll be returning to this particular well again, so those of you who have felt this reeked of trite bandwagoning (and Shepard Fairey's lawyers)can rest easy.
I'm new to Tee Fury and have a question I couldn't find the answer to on the site. How do you read the "Tee sold" chart? Right now it looks like only 23 tees have been sold, but I'm guessing it's go to be 2300, right? Sorry for the dumb question but I am curious!
This design is fantastic. I'm a conservative chick and not an Obama fan, but a huge horror fan, so it's perfect for me! I'd like to see more by this artist!
I don't understand how to read it either. I understand the bottom is hours, but I see no numbers on the side to tell you exactly how many have been sold.
Hi Wendyrae and Mech- the chart isn't intended to show exact numbers, just a rough comparison of sales during each hour of the day. This chart indicates pretty steady sales, with a bit of a dip in the early morning hours :)
This shirt is Rikered...and I'm buying one right now. Forget all the "What's the meaning?" garbage, it doesnt need a meaning. Funny is funny. Have my dollar Pop-Monkey. One more sold.
I voted for the man, hell, I drove 3 hours and shook his hand in New Hampshire when he was competing with Hilary. "you don't have to hate someone to want to wear their decaying zombie corpse."
great, the day that I don't go on teefury, I miss one of the best tees in ages.... Spock, seriously, this needs to be posted for sale again... seriously
Seems like there's a lot of folks who are distressed that they missed this one judging by the comments here and on my blog and all the emails I'm receiving. I am planning on having this thing reprinted somewhere soon, so if you want to get on the list, drop me an email and let me know who you are and what size you want. Just follow the link to my blog at the right and find my contact information there.
Thanks!
Noooo! I missed out :( just found out about this site. Anyone have one of these in a Men's X-large that they'd be willing to sell? (ok if it's been worn as long as it's clean and free of stains)
I am absolutely dying to get this version of this great tee.
I love the weathered version but i don't wnt the Zombama written on it.
I'm actually going to DC next month and really wanna show one off there, I also live in London and IM pretty certain that hardly anyone knows about it yet.
can anyone help?
noodle.
If anybody's still paying attention and if anybody still cares, I'm getting the second printing done this week and I'm taking preorders right now. Drop me a line at my email address (popmonkey75@gmail.com) and I'll get a paypal invoice to you asap.
Thanks!
Tell us about this design. There are many possible meanings and interpretations of this design, but if you're assigning some sort of racist, hate-filled vibe to it, then I suggest you take a long walk off a short pier. This is a commentary about rabid Obama fan-mania coupled with his missteps as a new leader, as well as a commentary about appropriation art. I'll leave the details up to your imagination. This is not a photo-manipulation of that other Obama piece, though it's obviously based on it -- it's completely hand-drawn from scratch, then rendered in Illustrator
Tell us about yourself. The son of migrant shoe-shiners, I was being raised to follow in my parents' footsteps when I began to draw little cartoons on the customers' shoes instead of polishing them (shoe-shining is just so boring!). My parents banished me from the family business and I wandered through the wonderful, mind-numbing world of factory work for years. Too many cartoons and comic books had permanently warped my psyche, however, making me unfit for normal jobs. A near-fatal accident involving a radioactive pencil becoming lodged in my brain shook loose the cobwebs in my head and caused me to realize I needed to pursue a career in art, leaving the factories far behind. I graduated from the Ringling School of Art and Design several years ago and have since been slowly hacking out a life in the freelance artscape. I pull my influences from comic artists, classic illustrators, pulp-art and pop-art.
Are there any ongoing art projects you would like to promote? I've got a shirt design coming out from Jinx.com (should be out by now) with more to come. Also some prints and shirts in development with Gorilla Riot. Been working on concept art for an online game that's probably too early (and secret) to announce. I'm always developing new illustrations for prints, buttons and shirts that I sell either at my cafe press shop, artistful.com, or are available directly from me (see links on my blog).
Mad Max, Terminator, or Aliens? Aliens, definitely. Though Mad Max comes in a close second. I saw the original release of ALIEN when I was 5 years old (it was at a drive-in movie and my parents thought I was asleep in the back of the station wagon). It gave me nightmares for life, and made a permanent impression on me. My dad had the giant Alien action figure and the Heavy Metalcomic book adaptation and I would sit around drawing aliens all day. By the time ALIENS rolled around, I was such an obsessed fan that I peed in my soda cup rather than get up to use the restroom at the theater and miss crucial minutes of the movie!
You are on Death Row. What's your last supper? Either bread and wine (hey, it was good enough for Jesus), or a fat ribeye with baked potato, asparagus and a greek salad. I'd wash that down with the darkest beer they've got. Burp.
Any shout outs? This goes out to ma 'n' pa. See, I told you I'd make it! Ain't no websites devoted to shoe-shiners, are there?

Very Creative.
Kudos Pop Monkey.
said 69 weeks ago
Popmonkey, it sounds like you have made this shirt for all the right reasons based on some of your explanations in your comments above.

so in my eyes wearing this shirt around your republican family members would make them feel happy that you are wearing an undead image of their hated president and would make you and other democrats feel happy that you are wearing a zombified image of our president (because it's awesome). I think it's win-win.
jecrtsaid 69 weeks ago
also - I've been in a few political arguments with my family, too.
^^none of that is true.

bad points #3 makes me think of all those resident evil 5 racism news reports. black people can be zombies too, dang it! it's an all inclusive...uh..condition? lifestyle? er...whatever you would call zombie-ism.

I'll vote for the first guy that says "Vote for me and I'll leave you alone."

only my 2nd ever teefury shirt.
I'm an unmitigated Obama lover, however, I like to think that i recognize his faults and I'm not the least bit afraid of wearing this shirt among liberals, or just to provoke arguments with my more conservative friends.

This design is fantastic. I'm a conservative chick and not an Obama fan, but a huge horror fan, so it's perfect for me! I'd like to see more by this artist!
