terrible color for the girls shirt -
A word from wotto: This tee has heart. If you are an artist or enjoy art in any way you should own this shirt. Read why below.
You have skills, how did you acquire them?
I've been drawing since I was old enough to know a pencil wasn't just an effective sibling torture device. I also made it through my junior year of art school and have been lucky enough to make my living as an artist/tattooist, so I'm always practicing in one way, or another.
So tell us how you developed this T-shirt design, what was the starting point?
The Orphan Works Act is a piece of legislation that kind of got slid under the radar and could make it very difficult for creative professionals to protect their works. At the very least, I predict the already over burdened courts will be flooded with a lot of "gray area" lawsuits, with copyright holders trying to protect their rights. It's also, ironically, just made the rebel street artists, who have traditionally flaunted laws and copyrights, legit.
Case in point, Shepard Fairey and the disputed AP photo of Obama that became his HOPE print. Either way, it goes to show how much, artists in this country need a voice in the capitol. Most other countries have art ministries and look at art as just as important as housing, defense, etc..
Which T-shirt do you wear the most?
I'm embarrassed to say, I have an old Southern Comfort tee shirt, worn as hell and falling apart, but I love that shirt!
Name one artist you think is underrated?
Basil Gogos (look him up).
Star Wars or Star Trek?
Aww geez. I grew up with James Tiberius Kirk and his crew, but I remember the excited feeling of sitting in the movie theater to watch Star Wars (yes, the 1977 one) with my brother and grandmother and coming out of there forever wanting to be Han Solo when I grew up.
Which 5 famous people would you like to have dinner with (dead or alive)?
Leonardo DaVinci, Robert Rauschenberg, Albert Einstein, John Wayne and Jesus Christ
What book would you suggest for people to read?
Sun Tzu's "The Art of War"
Who has been the best client you have designed for?
I did a couple of funny tee designs for Urban Outfitters, that should be out in a few months.
Who would you most like to dance with?
Carlton from "Fresh Prince". He might actually make my moves look good.
What plans do you have for 2009?
I plan on really getting back in front of the easel and putting my painting career back on track. I'm still going to design shirts and tattoo part-time, but the canvas has been calling and I've spent almost an entire year recharging my impetus and remembering who I am and why I do this crazy thing we do.
What animal would you be re-incarnated as and why?
A Shark. "nuff said.
Whoʼs portfolio website do you envy?
There's a whole lot of those, but my standout has to be Chet Zar.

To the artist- I dig your style, and I especially like the "art is power" one.

And I have a feeling that most of the disagreement over the "design" has little to do with the design itself or the skill of the artist, but rather with politics. This shirt has a bit of a "right-wing" feel to it, which apparently makes it inherently bad to most of the people here who seem to be left-leaning. Being "open-minded" and "free" means accepting the stuff that doesn't agree with you political ideology, too, folks. Just because the design includes a picture of a soldier doesn't mean it's all of a sudden "cool" to hate on it.

The Act seeks to recreate the patent system model to do this by requiring content producers of pictorial, graphic, and sculptural works to register their works with the government.
In essence the elected elite wish to cure confusing legal code with more confusing legal code, which makes this confusing shirt and its confusing explanation by the artist highly ironic.
Next maybe we can have a shirt about net neutrality.

I come from a fine arts background. My work has done its job if it creates emotion. The more negative the better, because my impetus, is the dark side of man. The more negative the response the more my work is validated. That and I really dig monsters!

After REALLY looking at the design, I see it's true meaning. But I'd rather not have some guy staring that intently at my shirt to catch the intricacies of its meaning.

And as far as "The more negative the response the more my work is validated" goes, I wouldn't say that negative responses/constructive criticism is one and the same as the "dark side of man." Seems like a strange parallel to draw. :-/

most designs i'm usually immediately drawn to or turned off of. this one i had to sit and look. good job to the artist, and to everyone else, can you say "mob mentality"? so often it seems like one comment on a shirt sparks a million copycats, and the views exponentially become more extreme.
anger issues? really? i mean, REALLY?
