Cool design -
Words from jimiyo: I really enjoy this design, not only is it technically well done by the use of shirt color for negative space, it has a mysterious Twilight Zone or Ripley's Believe It or Not vibe to it. Can't put my finger on it, but it's a winner. BTW, check out the interview. Solid, helpful information.
Tell us about this design: When I look up at night, I've always just been so in awe of how tiny I am in this world. Space just seems so infinite and only leads to more questions instead of answers. Is there life on other planets? Is anyone looking at the same star as me right now? Futurama was such a good show, why did they cancel it?
Tell us about yourself: I'm a San Diego Native who is a nerd, just like everyone else who is a graphic designer. I'm a creative director for a local athletic advertising company, but freelance for anyone and everyone on the side. I love, and have over 500 movies, have been fighting muay thai for 2 years and love my fiance.
You've won at several contest sites, tell us about that experience: The only thing I can say about winning at contest sites is to learn what the crowd likes there. Some design styles don't go over well at certain sites. I've come to realize that these are very picky crowds. Realize this early on, and don't waste time submitting a design you really took a lot of time on that will sit there wasted on a contest site.
Also, some sites take a long time to announce winners. BE PATIENT. I have actually won over at a certain contest site where human's design but i got impatient, sold the design early and then found out about a month later it was a winner. If you design something specifically for a contest expect to keep it there as long as the site's terms state it could take to win.
Any advice for aspiring artists? Be humble, you may think your stuff is great because it got a large amount of loves at certain sites but don't let that swell your head. It's a large world out there and there's a lot of us designing in it. Don't burn any bridges with your attitude. Networking is so key in this industry. You never know when a client you've worked with will be talking with a friend/relative/associate who needs work done and they just might bring up your name because you were easy to work with and delivered with the goods.
Any shout outs? If it weren't for Thomas Bailey and the dudes at wearesynapse.com doing quality work (SERIOUSLY, CHECK THEM OUT) and always being on aim I would be bored to death during the day. Speaking of aim, Derek Deal and Geoff May have always been super awesome with helping to point me in the right direction with whatever design questions I have.
Emptees.com sure has been a blessing and really brought a huge networking scene designers.
And, I know he sometimes gets a lot of crap buy Kyle Crawford of Electric Zombie has always been an awesome dude to talk to, and he's always offered advice and suggestions when I needed them.
