As always, you do great illustrative work, even if I'm not a huge fan of the topicality (though I kinda swooned at the "this island earth" critter at the top). Nice pick, wotto. T'ain't for me, but deserves a good reception.
And speaking of ms. Sonmi, I hope we mayhaps get to see her 'round these parts some day? No clue if she's ever been approached or done approaching, but I'm always excited to see her work, even when I don't want it for myself.
Goddammit! There goes another $11 from my bank account! Damn you TeeFury!
I have two questions about this design. I know who almost everyone is but it looks like there are two wolfmen; one in the bottom center and one in the back row on the right. Are they both supposed to be werewolves? Who are they? Also who is the guy, second row from the bottom, all the way on the left? He doesn't look familiar at all.
Just when I was getting scared TeeFury would never turn around. Amazing line work as Pepper stated... Just an awesome illustration overall. Congratulations on the print it is well deserved!
And thank you TeeFury for getting us a black shirt! WOOH!
finally a good piece of art :)
i like the black and white part of it, it seems like it'd be too jumbled with color.
i also love the sidebar stuff, the gorilla in the car and the little boy in the costume are sweeeet :D
One quick glance and you'd be forgiven for thinking that it was a mimicry of those gods with lotsa hands and legs (no offence to any religion) but a longer look and you'll start to appreciate the detail that went into this piece.
Especially the This Island Earth dude at the top, haha
I've been following TeeFury and shirt.woot for a little over a month now and I'm thinking of taking woot out of my bookmarks just because TeeFury's picks for designers and designs are clearly superior.
I love TeeFury because the designs are almost always solid, but this one really stands out to me. The illustration is amazing and I love the subject. I also love the creative way you've chosen to combine everything. It's a monster of monsters. Great work.
Holy hell! This is awesome! I kind alike how it looks like some kind of god out of mythology aat a first glance but nope! Some good ol CLASSIC detailed monster fun!
Great b&w illo! Congrats on the print too. Reading the sidebar I had to comment on James Jean....you know he is a he is a hack artist right? Seriously NO talent at all. haha just kidding. I'm so envious it makes me want to never draw again. Over at process I just saw the post on his recent show, WOW!
frickin boss! a definite buy, and thank goodness too because i hadn't bought a tee since the brown one with a cloud and lightning (i can't remember what it's called and too lazy to look it up).
congrats on the print and i absolutely dig your style.
wyzardtales, Bela is there, he's under the Creature from the Black Lagoon isn't he? A better study of this shirt made me realize the awesome symmetry of the image. If that is Bela's Dracula under the Creature then on the other side of the Creature is the German version of Dracula, Nosferatu. At the bottom is two Karloff creations, The Mummy and Frankenstein's Monster. Flanking The Creature are the brides of Dracula and Frankenstein.
Mr. Rocks, you are an outstanding artist/designer! I have to say I've never found myself attracted to a robot until I saw that design on the sidebar. Thank you, wotto and the Fury for bringing us this shirt!
Thanks everyone. Especially those of you who have purchased one today. Glad you all like my work enough to comment so positively.
My Zombie Chick and Future chick designs were for a New Zealand label called Cleatis Preston. The Zombie on has sold out, and they limit their runs and hand number every shirt. So sorry fellas. I am also 99% sure the robot one is also sold out.
Thanks again one and all, you've made my day brighter, and my hangover less painful!
It'd help though if the female model would stand up straight for once, I can never get a good idea of how it would look on me since I apparently don't have spine deformities...
Here's the official list from Mr. Rocks himself after I emailed him:
(top to bottom, left to right)
1. This Island Earth
2. Lon Cheney's Wolfman
3. Ingrid Pitt in The Vampire Lovers
4. The Creature from the Black Lagoon
5. The Bride of Frankenstein
6. The Phantom of the Opera
7. Christopher Lee's Hammer Horror Dracula (not Lugosi, I thought the eyes/nose looked off)
8. Werewolf of London
9. Nosferatu
10. Zombie from Night of the Living Dead
11. Vincent Price as The Abominable Dr. Phibes (spell checked Rocks! Never heard of this film but I checked its wiki page and it sounds so awesome!)
12. The Mummy
13. Frankenstein's Monster
I just checked James Jean's site, beautiful work. I love Crayoneater and Dahlia
I would buy this for the single fact that Christopher Lee's Dracula is pictured up there. Horror of Dracula was one of the most action-packed versions of Dracula I have ever seen. The Christopher Lee/Peter Cushing combo was an unstoppable force in the Hammer Horror films. Great choice. Mr. Rocks, you are a good man. I respect you dearly for your choice.
I honestly check teefury every night, those random crappy nights I fall asleep early, the shirts always end up kicking the smurf out of anything in my closet. Of course I never check it during the day, so I miss out completely, then check the archive, like right now and get all flustered.
A word from wotto: Do you ever see a designer and think 'Wow this guy/gal is one talented swine'? Well I did with Mr Rocks. He is right up there with the best. He certainly inspired me and I dare you to find an artist who can draw hotter woman.
You have skills, how did you acquire them? Thanks. I've acquired my skills over time, which means I am old! (I'm only a few years away from 40! How did this happen???) Seriously though, I have been drawing for a long time, every since I was a very young boy. My father used to paint, and owned a ton of old war comics that inspired me early on. I refined my skills at Design School, which taught me invaluable techniques and professional practice, and have been freelancing since graduating in 1994. Since then I have taught myself the riggers of Photoshop and illustrator, and so here we are today.
So tell us how you developed this T-shirt design, what was the starting point? I have always been a fan of the old school horror films, like the ones staring Vincent Price. I have a book on the subject, and wanted to do a semi abstract homage to these characters. I thought about doing this alot more realistically, like you could believe this was a stitched together creature. But I found inspiration in Rob Gould's drawing style, and the black and white drawing style kinda worked with this mish mash of monsters. Considering some of the actual films where in black and white, it was one of those happy misdirections, know what I mean?
Which T-shirt do you wear the most? HA! Hell, is it egotistical to admit it's one of my own designs? It's my Zombie Chick design that I did for a New Zealand label called Cleatis-Preston (http://www.cleatis-preston.com/). I had complete artistic control on this, and so I designed a shirt I would love to own. One of those dream jobs.
Name one artist you think is underrated? Man, thats a tough one, there are so many. If I can interpret 'underrated' as 'underexposed', then Julia Sonmi Heglund springs to mind (http://sonmisonmi.com/). I seethe with professional jealousy at the way she can just pick up a pen and start drawing a finished piece that could grace anyones wall. I consider her 'my friend Julia who'll be a famous artist one day'.
Star Wars or Star Trek? No contest, Star Wars. I was 5 when the original came out, and remember seeing the trailer at a Disney film. I could not wait!
Which 5 famous people would you like to have dinner with (dead or alive)? There'd have to be drinkers and talkers, so, in order, Elvis (for stories and a sing-along), James Jean (would pick his brain, and he'd probably relish the chance to sketch the other guests), Frank Sinatra (a drunken duet with me, and maybe Elvis), Ernest Hemingway (more stories, and he could mix the mojitos), and last but not least Betty Page (keep her away from Elvis!).
What book would you suggest for people to read? BLACKSAD. noir graphic novel genius. Buy both stories, and the behind the scenes book. All will inspire.
Who has been the best client you have designed for? Joel at Shirt Woot is great. An open brief ,so artistically rewarding. Plus realistic budgets and royalties. Ticks all the boxes.
Who would you most like to dance with? I think Jennifer Lopez could teach me a thing or two about rhythm, as they say it's gonna get you.
What plans do you have for 2009? I want to do more painting, feel like more of an artist. I'd like to curate another show this year, but finding time outside of freelancing lately has been tough.
What animal would you be re-incarnated as and why? Easy, a cat. More specifically, and un-neutered male cat. Cats have it made! Eat, sleep, play, sleep, cruise, sleep. I'm really into my sleep.
Who’s portfolio website do you envy? Another easy question. James Jean (http://www.jamesjean.com/ but also check out his blog http://www.processrecess.com/). I almost want to weep at what he's achieved before he's even 30! But it goes to prove that talent backed by hard work will get you everything you ever wished for.
Want to promote a website/someone/yourself? Sure, here are a couple. The Black Rock Collective, which I am proud to say I help start up:
