Now now...Be nice! There's something for everyone. Also:
"I really enjoy drawing filigree/flourishes, but after the saturation of the flourish vector packs it became taboo, even if you made it from scratch."
This is so true. All I can say, is screw you Hollister and Express. You killed a nice thing. And Arsenal - please stop. It seems like any clean line work gets calls of "VECTOR PACK!" these days, so frankly I wish they didn't exist. Even so, a terrible designer won't know what to do with even pre-drawn elements, as any secretay's clip art collection will attest. Congrats, Nick, and good luck!
Don't worry, MJ. He's just sad because he's a freak for a car he can unlikely afford. He's likely the kind of guy that owns a used pink boxster from Carmax or a 944 he pilfered from his Pedo uncle and thinks he owns a Porsche.
Very easy to spot haters here. Click on any user name and you can see a history of their recent comments. I do that once in a while when I see someone being an ass here. Not going to mention any names but it's quite obvious who I'm referring to...
It really upsets me to see people who do nothing but make rude comments. If you don't like a design, give some constructive criticism on how to improve it, or say nothing at all. Obviously the design was good enough to get printed.
i love this site. if its a sweet shirt, you can buy it. if you hate it, you can say you hate it and call it stupid. if you feel it necessary, you can defend the creater of the shirt from people who think its crappy. and if you're like me, you can read all of this and laugh. thanks tee fury. good times.
interesting colour combo for the girls tee. i'm not really a fan of the guys colour combo at all, i think it was a poor choice in shirt colour. i think it doesn't stand out as much as the blue. the design overall is too generic-looking for my taste, but i defiantly can see people wearing it.
also, your second painting on the side is lovely.
-
and to all the teefury members, personally, i'm getting really sick of hearing all these name callings. people can say constructive criticism without being a total jerk and people can respond to that criticism without being a total jerk as well. we all can have our moments (even myself), but this much, it's just ridiculous.
For sure Aegis! Thank you thank you. I will also be fairly active on Teefury as well, since Teefury is like DBH's overflow outlet. Quality Designs at Outlet Prices!
good work man,
I really like the concept and its appeal, chaos is really something I like to see. I like your painting with the tree on the side, almost looks like blue flames.
Don't worry about these "haters." It's like they always say, the only good art is one that inspires criticism.
Plus, i watch a lot of people on here and seem to realize they are always critics, but a lot of people don't have work to show themselves.
i would like to say that anyone interested in being a DonkeyKong for no reason should relocate themselves to woot where they belong and leave this artists site to the artists.
and for those of you saying to yourselves "but pepper isnt an artist" well mind your own business cause i am a muse and thats just as awesome.
"To each his own." = no point in expressing your opinion, other than seeking attention. :O It can also mean, "I'm too lazy to constructively argue against your unconstructive criticism and I'm not allowed to call you something that'll get my post deleted." :D
I love these kinds of tees. I hit the jackpot with the Grab Bag Surprise (awesome tiger design) so I'll have to pass on this one. Ngeh, that doesn't make sense. Yeah, the real reason's my wallet is threatening to divorce me.
I dunno...seems like grunge/vector art for the sake of grunge/vector art. I'm all for aesthetically pleasing pieces that blow my mind away, but I like art to be purposeful and outside of the box. While it's a pretty image, I don't feel it instills anything other than "that's cool" or "that's not cool" response.
The pieces on the sidebar provoke a second glance much more successfully.
Wait, what? Opinions = attention whoring? From the boring gray of the guys, the faded blue shapes, paint splatter, and just random objects thrown screams to me that it's generic? If I saw someone with this shirt, it says "random mess" rather than "frustrated chaos". Adding onto Stormink, there's no story here. Maybe if you tied in a symbol of the mind or even a face faded into the design. To me, it's plain and uninteresting. No story, nothing you can relate to and hardly aesthetic. Sorry I'm not as sophisticated as some of you to appreciate Anchor Blue designs.
this is a disappointment to teefury.
i've seen so many better designs before, this one seems like there was no time spent on it. i don't really see why anyone would wear this.
hate me for having an opinion, i don't give much of a smurf.
"Don't worry, MJ. He's just sad because he's a freak for a car he can unlikely afford. He's likely the kind of guy that owns a used pink boxster from Carmax or a 944 he pilfered from his Pedo uncle and thinks he owns a Porsche."
is this your attempt at a comeback?
they should delete retarted attempts at insults instead of people's opinions...
Well in any situations there'll be ups and lows. This design, imho, isnt really that sweet, but it is balanced. Its as if you're looking at a piece of grunge art that's trying to fit itself within clean, bold lines -- and the result? Chaotic, of course.
Okay, I think this is a questionable piece of art, but it is art nevertheless (to have invoked so much sentiments from some of you). Personally, I'm passing on today's buy as it didn't fit my style -- but it may fit some of you.
As for criticism, I believe if you're an artist who's putting something up, you gotta be prepared to accept them. Be it good or bad. Take them, digest them, and move on to your next project.
To be honest, when I first saw this design, I went "...oh, wow. Really?" in a bad way. I don't want to be a hater, because that's not who I am (I love this website's t-shirts and even find aesthetic beauty in the more hated ones), but I honestly cannot find any appeal to this design or imagine anyone wearing it.
What makes it kind of more sad for me is that the stuff in the side panel is pretty good, so it's not like the artist can't design...
I do like the design and the color for the girl's, but I've seen grunge/vector shirts so much lately(not on Teefury) it's getting old.
The girl's shirt is also a little too squished, it should have been extended.
This shirt is much better than yesterday's, but that isn't saying much considering yesterday's sucked.
I can't stand the position in which it's printed. I think it looks very incomplete, you should have continued the design onto the rest of the shirt.
Also, the fact that you used the same pattern in the dark blue splatters and the white outlines is very distracting (might just be me).
Overall, I'm pretty disappointed with this shirt. You little 10 year olds (MJ, Aegis, EdwardBlake) can cry about me being mean, but the truth is we are not here to be supportive of artists' work. We're here to state opinions or give criticism. Whether or not those opinions or critiques are positive is irrelevant.
i know the point of having the sidebar art is to promote the artist, but maybe you should consider just having a link and that's it. i see it as a let down. these are great artists and most of the work on the side is really nice. but most of the time i look at the art panel and look at the shirt and i find a hard time seeing how these were even done by the same person (and im NOT saying they arent done by the same person). some of the designs - like today's - look like they were done in 2 seconds. i can tell this one took no thought or effort. sigh.
""Seeing a design like this printed makes me sad when one of my designs was rejected for "not having a story". Oh well."
Maybe a nicer way to say that they dont like your design? Some people are not so direct."
And people like that should be shot. Don't waste other peoples' time by not being direct.
But anyways... I agree with a lot of the people who said that this shirt took very little effort from an artist who (judging by the sidebar) has significant talent. That is why I am disappointed. I feel that TeeFury hopefully has enough submissions to not allow this kinda of work to get printed, but maybe less people submit then I thought.
I don't really like the placement. Perhaps if it was flipped and bottom-placed I would like it more, but as it is, it isn't for me as it would look as if my boob was leaking. And well, that just shouldn't be happening.
For anyone who thinks that people are being prevented from their opinions, no one is. What people are saying is that if you voice it, your comments should have the effect of providing specifics, or simply "Not for me".
When you state things in an invective manner, you're essentially stating that your personal opinion is far more valid about a subjective thing (this art is good/bad) than anyone else in the world. Indeed, you think your opinion is more valid than even the owners of the site - so valid, you don't even have to explain yourself. By calling the art smurfy, you're essentially saying THEIR judgment is smurfy. As such, good luck getting printed.
If you want a career in art, there are a couple ways to go about it. You can be an INCREDIBLE artist, and act however you want to anyone you want, or you can be a decent one who communicates and networks well. Now, Lashy, Porsche, Tek, etc - I doubt you're in the former group, and you certainly aren't in the latter. So an art career is pretty much out for you (as in, it supplies your primary source of income).
Perhaps all you want is to buy art, and have no desire to produce it. If that's the case, then a simple "not for me" and a lack of dollars spent is all you need to drive the content towards what you DO like. No one cares about your opinion beyond that, because guess what: YOU DON'T OWN THE SITE. This is likely because you're all talk and no action, and why I suspect you're a near-failure in everything you do, save making fun of people. Hell, you're not even particularly good at that.
And Zealot:
"Retarted "? Surely you mean smurfed, dear boy/girl. The irony is stunning.
For his part, Lashy did give helpful specifics. He's just wrong about the tone being irrelevant. Mostly, the inflammatory tone harms the person who is saying it (as outlined above).
Aegis. First of all, I want to say that that response was very entertaining. I honestly couldn't tell if you were serious or not, because pretty much everything you said was 100% hypocritical.
1) Stating things in an invective manner:
I actually did provide constructive criticism in my comment, and also stated that it might just be my personal view, and not something that the majority of the people viewing this would agree with.
2) Opinions:
This is an area where you are seriously smurfed. You seem to think that your opinion is the only one that matters (which again contradicts your first paragraph) and that any other opinions don't matter (in fact, you actually said that in your 4th paragraph).
If I had to diagnose your problem, I would say that you have a habit of looking down on people and that you should try learn to tolerate other peoples' points of view. Otherwise, you're going to continue making generic, unoriginal artwork (Yes. I took the time to look at your family's website, which by the way, looks like some cheap free hosted website.) that you do so well. Why? Because you will not accept constructive criticism and will go on thinking you're the best at everything without taking the time and effort to improve.
P.S. I apologize if any of this message seems poorly organized. It was written in only a few minutes.
To clarify, there is no problem with stating opinions. I love opinions. What is not okay is to state those opinions in a way that insults and demeans the other members and artists at this site. I had to remove a couple of comments for disgusting insults and obscenities, which I think we can all agree is not appropriate.
Saying "I don't like this design, it's not my style" is totally okay. Calling people retards, writing pornographic comments, etc is not okay.
Carry on, and please try to be respectful of each other.
Unfortunately not something I'll nab yet, but I'll go with everyone in admitting it looks great in the girls coloration! Not bad placement either, haha kind alooks like how I did recently after painting the walls! XD
I agree with everyone who says constructive comments are the priority, but sometimes its hard to sit by day after day of seeing shirts that have blatantly poor design (not that this shirt does, in fact I prefer it to much of the designs of the past) being printed consecutively.
Cnior, however, you may want to give good examples of constructive comments when you make a statement like that, because "This design. absolutely. rocks. nice job!" isn't exactly that constructive.
Finally, those who are advocating only nice comments need to seriously think about why the more demeaning comments are posted. As a consumer we don't get to pick what goes up for sale at TeeFury so some find it necessary to voice their discontent more graphically than others so that, hopefully, the shirts will continue to improve. Unfortunately, as of late that does not seem to be happening, but there is always hope for the future! (I hope.)
Sooo, I'm thinking of buying this shirt just so I can remember the intense controversy incited by a Tee shirt. Ha! :D (AND, I wonder if someone would pick a fight with me for wearing it; this shirt could possibly make my rather dull life more interesting.) That's it! I'm sold. I'll be wearin' this shirt to every peace rally from here on out! (Due to its halcyon effect, no doubt.) :D
sporadic, overly-negative comments aren't a good gauge as to what consumers want. Sales tell an artist what a consumer wants. I've said it a million times, but I guess I can say it again - artists need to eat. Crappy, negative comments that could deter someone from buying a shirt is like slapping a dollar out of the artist's hand. It's easy to disagree without being negative. Don't be idiots.
if you don't like a shirt - so what. I don't get the reasoning behind telling other people about something you don't like. I hate raisins, but I've never told someone at the grocery store how much they smurf. Why? Because no one cares. Support, on the other hand, is just good karma.
for the record - I bought yesterday's shirt, or else I would have bought today's shirt. Nice work!
i quite like it, i think that the lines and composition of it work quite well and a like the position and the colors. i like the fact that its not really anything specific, you can make of it what you want. shame i'm a broke student other wise i would be severely tempted
i do really like the two top pics in the side panel though
Jecrt, it is very good for people to post about things they don't like. I don't know about you, but as an artist I rely on constructive feedback to further my ideas and my art. Of course this doesn't mean rude comments. TeeFury should also care about people posting when they don't like something, as long as they give good reasons, because it can help the curators judge what the audience is looking for (that is assuming they are open to new ideas).
Artists need to eat. Sure. But if your design isn't well designed, you don't deserve to eat from it. Make another. Keep creating until you have something that deserves attention and then make money from it. And then start again.
And for people who say "everyone has their own tastes" in response to every criticism, you are not answering what is being said. There is such thing as like a piece and not liking a piece, but that is very different from whether a piece is well designed or not. Something can be poorly designed and be attractive in other ways, or it can be beautifully designed but not fit the aesthetic of the buyer. (Notice I said criticism not "i don't like it".
If you are putting your art up in a public place (especially one where it is being sold) you need to be courageous enough to not only bare but listen to critique of your work.
You are NOT an artist if you don't listen to intellectual critiques of your work.
wow aqeis just loves to stir the pot in these comment areas i see - im becoming addicted to reading through the comments more then viewing the shirts ... by the way about todays shirt i'd def. go with the navy blue .... but the pattern seems like there should be something more --- it lacks something but i can't put my finger on it - but over all still clever .... still have yet to view a shirt that i actaully buy .... hmmmm
a subject matter or a defining item within the pattern ... it just seems to be a bunch of clip art layered over each other and some colors slapped on it --- thats what i think my problem with it is at any rate - i wanted to give you kudos on your side art as well : P
Oh man, I didn't realize so many people were this sensitive 8C
I know no one is addressing me specifically, but here goes anyway. By my own comment I tried to be respectful and criticize based on my experience as an artist myself. I figure if I had a shirt up here, I would want people to buy but I think a lot of artistically minded people follow Tee Fury and I would want to know what they thought just to get some new perspectives. I know how consuming art can be and it's hard to back up and take a look.
That said, I think anyone with constructive criticism should speak their mind, but I also think that name-calling and biting insults have no place here.
OK I have to say something...not all of us are artists, so all this talk of constructive criticism is not exactly fair to those of us who are just consumers. We are allowed to say if we like a shirt or not. There wouldn't be a comment section here if they didn't want comments.
Snarky, I'm sure that you realize there is a difference between saying you dislike a shirt (giving reasons for your opinion) and insulting other posters.
One is encouraged, one is not. I think everyone here is mature enough to be able to express themselves without resorting to insults and taunts. Disagree, and do it respectfully.
I think that constructive criticism is great, however, this does not necessarily mean that everything said is positive. It can be negative and of course it is better if, from either artist or consumer, specifics are mentioned so that the artist can either A. adapt to better appeal to their audience, or B. remain the same, comfortable in the message their art conveys to them and whoever else it appeals to.
The problem arises when the focus gets drawn away from the subject at hand, the art, and instead rests on the conflicts between personalities on the comments part of the site. That's where the name calling comes in.
MJ, you tell us to be respectful...well I suggest you real Aegis' comment where he says "
Perhaps all you want is to buy art, and have no desire to produce it. If that's the case, then a simple "not for me" and a lack of dollars spent is all you need to drive the content towards what you DO like. No one cares about your opinion beyond that, because guess what: YOU DON'T OWN THE SITE".
How is that respectful? Who is he to say something like that? That is why I said what I said. No one cares about our opinions? Who the hell is he? Last night he was downright insulting to people when they said they didn't like his shirt!
Snarky, in my reading of his complete post I believe you are taking his words out of context. The statement began with "What people are saying is that if you voice it, your comments should have the effect of providing specifics, or simply "Not for me"."
The area you quoted from was directed at those who "state things in an invective manner", ie those who are needlessly insulting.
I don't see his post as being degrading to other site members. Feel free to email me if you'd like to discuss this further.
A word from the curator: Nick's abstract style combines grungey imagery with great color choices. Two lines collide fiercely, and the resulting design looks almost like a star exploding.
Tell us the background of this design. I really enjoy drawing filigree/flourishes, but after the saturation of the flourish vector packs it became taboo, even if you made it from scratch. This is an older design and was the first I did after getting flack for filigree designs. It's sort of born of frustration, which gives it a bit of an authentic chaos. Luckily I can still paint filigree by hand and nobody will accuse me of using an acrylic clipart pack. How did you get started designing t-shirts? I started designing t-shirts and really understanding the process at my job in the promotional products industry. I started designing t-shirts for fun on shirt.woot around their fourth derby. What advice would you offer to aspiring designers? Listening has been the most valuable thing for me. Find talented artists and designers and listen to them. Ask about their experiences, motivations, whatever it takes to get them to talk about their lives and their art. Join forums online and start asking questions if you don't know anyone personally. Also, like anything else in life, practice. What would be your dream job? I'd love to own my own business (I'm trying, unsuccessfully), but any creative field would be great as long as the environment is relaxed and constantly inspires creativity. If I have a lot to learn from talented coworkers that's a huge bonus. What are your feelings on space travel? I look forward to being stuck with a couple robots watching terrible movies and making hilarious comments. Do you prefer The Sopranos, The Wire, or Six Feet Under? Six Feet Under A tank vs. a dragon: who would win the battle? If it's a Komodo dragon I think the tank would just squash it effortlessly. If a dragon of myth, I suspect we'd need to have a pretty great knight in our tank. Do we? Describe your favorite shirt that you own, and why you like it so much. I had a DBH print that I've really loved... When I first started submitting to contests I made a goal for myself to get printed there in a certain amount of time and I met that goal. It was a big deal to me. What was your favorite as a kid: comics, cartoons, or movies? Was there a specific title you liked most of all? As a kid it was cartoons, but there were too many favorites to pick just one. What are a few of your favorite websites? Ffffound, google, design contest sites, wikipedia Any shout outs? Coworkers, friends, family

Carry on, and please try to be respectful of each other.

take your arguments to myspace.
Constructive comments only.
Ex.
"1. this design. absolutely. rocks. nice job!
2. i hate navy blue shirts so i gotta opt out. get it printed on another color and i'm sooooooooooo down!
again. really good job. i love abstract shirts like this.
you're wicked talented, mr. seluk."

I like the design and the colors.
I am however, poor.

(I hope.)

if you don't like a shirt - so what.
Nice work!

Quick question, do shirts on this site 'sell out?' or they just print accordingly? Just wondering, thanks people :D

One is encouraged, one is not. I think everyone here is mature enough to be able to express themselves without resorting to insults and taunts. Disagree, and do it respectfully.
liner13said 168 weeks ago
I think that constructive criticism is great, however, this does not necessarily mean that everything said is positive. It can be negative and of course it is better if, from either artist or consumer, specifics are mentioned so that the artist can either A. adapt to better appeal to their audience, or B. remain the same, comfortable in the message their art conveys to them and whoever else it appeals to.
The problem arises when the focus gets drawn away from the subject at hand, the art, and instead rests on the conflicts between personalities on the comments part of the site. That's where the name calling comes in.
snarkygalsaid 168 weeks ago
Perhaps all you want is to buy art, and have no desire to produce it. If that's the case, then a simple "not for me" and a lack of dollars spent is all you need to drive the content towards what you DO like. No one cares about your opinion beyond that, because guess what: YOU DON'T OWN THE SITE".
How is that respectful? Who is he to say something like that? That is why I said what I said. No one cares about our opinions? Who the hell is he? Last night he was downright insulting to people when they said they didn't like his shirt!

The area you quoted from was directed at those who "state things in an invective manner", ie those who are needlessly insulting.
I don't see his post as being degrading to other site members. Feel free to email me if you'd like to discuss this further.
