The Bird in a Tree Shirt
About the artist
A word from wotto:
I have heard Steven singing "oh flower of Scotland" from Stirling castle on many a Sunday afternoon. Despite the fact this genius designer only lives around the corner from me, I am yet to allow him the pleasure of buying me a pint. Come on Steven sort it out! Great tee, wouldn't expect anything less from this talented designer.
Tell us a little about this design.
I'd noticed last year that there seemed to be a lot of illustrations around depicting birds in trees, not just for shirts but across all areas of illustration and I thought it was almost a little too common. As a reaction, I thought I'd do one for a shirt to point out that as a subject it was a cliché in waiting, then ended up really liking the result. Basically I fell victim to a trend.
Where in the world are you?
I'm from a little village just outside Stirling in Scotland. It's a great place and the view from my window is of green hills and old Stirling Castle. I like it here but it's the kind of place you take for granted until tourists remind you how cool it actually is.
What is your favourite medium?
I normally prefer to sketch out on plain old paper first then transfer ideas to screen later using Illustrator and Photoshop, but it really depends on what I'm working on at the time. I've really got into using a graphics tablet lately too, those things are fun. I've always been a bit of a jack of all trades design-wise but I'm going to look to lock down a definable style this year so I'll be experimenting a lot more with photography and type I think.
Which superhero power would you like the most and why?
I'd love the ability to see things quicker than normal - sort of like a fly. I like how flies seem to see everything coming and get out the way, I find that pretty incredible.
Who is the best villain ever?
I like rubbish villains personally. You know, the really crap ones like Flash had. The Trickster, Rainbow Raider, Mirror Master - all rubbish, but sort of cool at the same time. If we're talking heavy hitting villains though, you really can't beat the Joker for sheer random madness.
What was the last song you listened to?
I really don't know but it was probably a Kings of Leon track off the new album as it's currently in the CD player in my car.
"Well, that's like, your opinion man." The Dude, The Big Lebowski.
Who has been the best client you have designed for?
I refuse to answer that on the grounds that I tell everyone they are my best client!
Who would you most like to collaborate with?
Ooh, that's a toughie! There's lots of people I think I could make a good foil for. I do a lot of collaboration work as part of the Black Rock Collective, but on a partner basis, I'd love to work with Olly Moss, Sockmonkee, Oliver Barrett, and Dan Sheffield amongst others.
How many t-shirts do you own?
Not as many as I used to. I started to throw away loads over the last few years, and I don't wear too many graphic tshirts now. I like polo tops and shirts mainly though I still wear tshirts for kicking around in.
Which website do you go to everyday?
I visit the BRC forum everyday, as well as Emptees, FFFFound, and Flickr.
