*sigh* i agree with snarkygal and undertow976. i was especially disappoint with the "tell us a little about this design".
i was pretty content the last few days thinking the bad reviews had been taken into consideration. but once again, i'm disappointed.. this site did start off so well...
Nice design :) Not really sure how it's "ignorant." I'm not into humor shirts myself, but I think people are being atypically harsh on this one. Lighten up, people! There will always be another design tomorrow...
Come on people, lighten a little... Tis just a joke and nothing more, and of course not everyone's cup of tea. Don't hate on this site for allowing artists to make their work available to the masses... at least those enjoy stupid humor.
Part of the beauty of TeeFury is the variety- sorry some folks aren't digging this one, but there's always tomorrow. And the day after that. And the day after that. ;)
His reason behind the design makes sense. I don't think it's ignorant in any way. The artist has his own way of expressing his art, so cut him some slack and give constructive criticism even if you don't like it.
To us, the father of our country. To the British, he was a rebel, even an A-hole. If he lived in the 21st century, might he not be toting a semiautomatic?
OK, it's a little fast and loose with the reinterpretation of history, but the artist has that vision and the right to that vision. If Washington and Lincoln are sacrosanct to you, buy some other T. Personally this reminds me of Patty Hearst in the Symbionese Liberation Army.
Personally, I saw the gun as a statement on the cutthroat approach many in this country have to capitalism, not a statement on George Washington so much as on money itself. So I think the design is fairly open to interpretation.
As for legality, totally legal. It is parody and covered by the first amendment. The only problem would be if this were printed on paper in a way that came too close to looking like a real dollar bill.
Honestly i don't see the point of everyone's negative comments.
his art was good enough to get on to the site, so if you're going to complain, then you should show what work you have instead of calling it "horrible" and "a waste of pixels". I personally didn't like many shirts for a while up until this one, and from my point of view there are many that are a lot more pointless/stupid than this one.
but yeah. i like the art. also the stuff on the sidebar :)
I gotta say this is the first shirt I've seen that I really don't like. I think it could have been executed in a more clever manner. And aesthetically, it doesn't really say anything either.
zeolot, peopel are complain that tee fury lowered its standers. i love this shirt and i love the concept but I wish the hands and gun where done in the same style as the face
Is the angst because it's GW with a gun? Before he was President George Washington, he was a General and long before that he started out as a Lieutenant Colonel, fighting in the French and Indian War. George was no stranger to the rifle.
interesting...it opens up a lot of filler conversation. not a favorite for sure. but people, come on. be a little more open minded about different designs. this one is good, not for me. but still good. geez...
Wow. I can't believe the negative comments about this. I mean, I thought it's not the most hilarious thing that will ever happen, but it's funny in that "look at two things that don't really go together" sort of way, like the way "basketball taco" is funny.
Sorry it's not a realistic rendering of some deer head saying "breathe" or a re-hash of a Mark Ryden doll-girl or a closeup of a hipster girl's eye for you kids who thrive off your lack of a sense of humor and want to be OH SO DEEP.
Hmmm. Artists should be free to express their art in any way, so long as it's not endangering anyone. Whether you're a good ole' boy, America hater, Creationist, Athiest, Anarchist, Marxist, Naturist, whatever!
Good on you for doing what art is supposed to do. Create conversation.
Personally speaking, it is a touchy subject putting GW in a negative light, but whatev. I actually would have liked to see more detail in it by making it look a bit MORE like money. There's so many filigree details in money that could have made this sick!
Ok, so take this shirt & remove everything in white (the design). Then put a black side shot of an M16 with a black teefury bird sitting on the barrel and I would've bought this shirt. Meh.
not my favorite design. the inconsistency of styles in the design are jarring and make it look slapped together rather hastily. if it weren't so, i'd say it was a decent shirt.
Totally silly and kind of highly amusing in an economic sense. I like - won't buy it, but...I can see why one would.
Also - dudes and dudettes: ease up folks. It's just a shirt, not a political movement. Shirts are supposed to be silly if they're silly, and serious if they're serious. TeeFury kind of brings that to light - so let's just laugh at it, like we're supposed to and move on.
(I'd also agree on the idea that more detail and 'dollar-like' filigree would've been sweeeet. Other than that, nothing new to add.)
Oh my! I love waking up to some controversy. I knew when I decided to roll with this it would get some heat. I think it's good that this site has the occasional 'surprise' up it's sleeve. Wouldn't life be boring if all teefury tees were very similar?
I quite like the design but It seems very rushed. I mean the fact that the head, hands+gun and background are all rendered in varying styles and levels of detail kinda ruins the image for me, if it was consistently rendered or drawn like the face then it would be much cooler.
Still it is a fun design, just maybe set for print a little prematurely?
Just because some of you don't like the shirts in the past few days doesn't mean Teefury is ruined. People have different tastes, get over it.
I didn't like the shirts in the past few days, but Teefury is still by far my favorite T-shirt site. I know eventually they'll chuck a perfect shirt at me.
I think the artist should be glad to have stirred so many comments. And to the people being extremely harsh, did the artist personally do something to you? Relax, how much of your artwork is on a t-shirt? I wouldn't buy it, but I do think its pretty cool and has some depth to it as well.
I don't get why people are crapping on this so much? It's a great shirt. All of this "disprectful" / "negative light" stuff is dumb. I mean - the guy was a general. If they had semiautomatic weapons then, he would probably have a bunch of pictures of himself just like this up on his facebook page.
Can anyone give me advice about fit on these shirts? The sizing chart doesn't help much. My boyfriend usually likes to wear his t-shirts 3X...will a 2X on here fit? Do these run big or small?
after sleeping on this, i think I might buy it. If only i didnt drop so much cash at NY comicon yesterday. I did get a sweet of centered print frank miller darknight returns t shirt tho. and they hate Red, yellow and black lantern shirts too. If i didnt have an engagement party to be at i would be at comicon again right now
completely disrespectful! this country is going through tough times and we absolutely need to start respecting our forefathers as well as our new leaders. no wonder the rest of the world hates the u.s.
I hope your being sarcastic, if you are then you have an awesome seance oh humor and we should be friends the rest of the world hates us because we are dicks and they are assholes, dicks and assholes normal don't mix well
What planet do you live on everyone wants to move to the us bc the us is unlike any other country on this planet and one of the things that's makes us unique is freedom of speech which let's anyone who wants to create make sell and wear shirts like this without being arrested so I think you need to crawl out from under a rock and start exercising those rights instead of bitching about an ARTIST being disrespectful
there isnt better art out there that could have been used? simple lines that leave a great deal of want, and the detail of the art is a direct lift from u.s. currency. something out there has to be more awe- inspiring or creative, surely.
This shirt and all the comments just shows how ignorant the genral population is. George is a good old boy from Virginia. If he was around today hell ya he would be packen. And He would be pissed, not about the state of the country but at the price of BEER!! Read a Book its good for you.
Man I didn't realize how snobby some of theses t sites are.
I dig this tee a lot!!
If you ain't diggin it people, go and design your own and see the votes you get or don't get.
Its a clever idea, but it leaves the eye wanting a little more detail, I think just because we know it is supposed to be a dollar bill but currency has so much more detail than this and the fact that some of it is very finely wrought while the rest of it is not - it feels.. inconsistent?
Thanks again everyone, even those with absurdly mean comments that take offense to this... thank you so much!
And to those who think the clash of styles and rough edges take away from this, It wasn't hastily done... it's basically how I imagined the image in my head when the idea arrived. I tried adding in extra $ flourishes and stuff of that nature, but it all took away from the main image IMO. So love it or leave it!
It amazes me how this site if filled with stupid, pointless shirts, yet so many people act as if they are offended because this one doesn't "say anything". The vast majority of the shirts on this site don't say anything, but I bet if we put a crappy indie-looking design on this one you would all love it.
"completely disrespectful! this country is going through tough times and we absolutely need to start respecting our forefathers as well as our new leaders. no wonder the rest of the world hates the u.s."
I'm not sure if you knew this, but GW was as general. You really think he would be offended by a portrait of him holding a gun? Ignorant people never cease to amaze me.
I think George would actually like, "Oh Snap, That is Cool, I AM Cool. John Rutledge never had nothing on me, neither did that showboating John Milton, he can take that Paradise Lost and shov....."
I don't even know what to say to this... TeeFury has shocked me. (not in a good way) I thought they had more class. Can you say "picture+cutout+stroke = shirt?" I think not... At least have nice execution for a concept if you want it to be taken seriously.
Its really too bad too since the artists other work is perfectly decent... This makes me lose so much faith in TeeFury.
I have no problem with the idea behind the design, but I hate seeing shirts on TeeFury that make it look like a dumping ground for unfinished work.
I love signing in to this site and getting a "oooh awesome!" response, or a big fat good ol LOL. Love the concept! Though I'll agree with a few other sticklers, it would've been perfect if the rest had been made to look a little more detailed. Or tee friendly?
The title gets me the most though. I just like saying it.
TeeFury is doing a great job at selecting diverse works. I like not knowing what will be up next, and seeing so many different styles each week. I like knowing that I can submit ANYTHING to TeeFury, and that there is some chance that something will be picked, unlike at Threadless or Woot, where I never submit works because almost all of their stuff is so similar.
To the complainers: you're not going to like every shirt here, but you need to realize that there are plenty of people who may like something you don't, so instead of criticizing TeeFury's selection, just wait until the next shirt comes up. If you read through the comments on today's tee, it is clear that there are plenty of people who love it and are willing to make a purchase.
good grief, its like some of you people haven't even heard of free speech! sure is a little over the top but hell, its up to the artist to decide what they want to portray. i think it'd be great propaganda against any terrorist thinking they can just roll right over us, lol.
Dauthra... freedom of speech goes both ways. And I take pride in being very vocal when I think a design isn't worth anything.
Sorry killkillkill, the site itself was my 10th grade project a long while ago and I have never updated it since. (But when I get away from all the work I have I'll make you a new one.) I quite liked your site in your bio as well, oh wait, no.
DCAY, as an artist it's about time you learn how to take constructive criticism. Having you work critiqued is as important as the process of making a design. Also, if you are going to be a professional and try to market a shirt out to anyone you should be an adult about it. The fact of the matter is you weren't a professional; the shirt does look unfinished, the about the design ended with an "I guess....", and to top you were being very childish with your rude comments to someday potential clients. You should never tell anyone who might someday buy from you to "eat a CaptainKirk", even with some sort of smiley face afterwords, it doesn't make it cute or funny. It's very unprofessional, and I think you should reconsider parts of your designs and attitude before submitting anything else to TeeFury.
eludingsun and others: I do apologize for the rude and rather childish remarks I made earlier. My reasoning for doing so is not so much that Stormink was cutting my work down, but he had many disrespectful things to say about the Teefury site itself.
I want to assure you that I am a professional and understand and fully accept constructive crits. But, when a person continues to attack my work multiple times, in a non-constructive manner (Stormlink:"I take pride in being very vocal when I think a design isn't worth anything") it's hard not to get personal.
This tee sold well, so there were plenty of people the enjoyed the concept and execution enough and wished to own a piece of my art... and for that I can not thank them enough. I thank everyone who had constructive criticism as well, and even those who brought in outside views and opinions to make this such a controversial tee for this site.
I don't think the design looks unfinished because it lacks detail. It's very easy to overwork an image, and certainly a lot of popular shirts on this site are very detailed, which suits them. In this design's case, however, more detail would distract from the point of the image itself. In the end, it's up to the artist himself or herself to decide which way to present an idea. It takes as much skill (and often more) to present a simple design as a complex one, and I think it's all too easy to decide something is not well-executed because it doesn't fit one's personal aesthetic.
I'm not sure exactly where I stand on the execution of this one. It does seem a little top heavy to me, but maybe I'm just expecting to see the words "In God We Trust" at the bottom of the image. Which would, of course, offend people all the more. LOL Maybe a fine white line at the bottom of the design, so George doesn't seem to be floating so much?
Tell us a little about this design. It's G-Washington... he's mad... because he's not worth as much as he used to be.... I guess.... Where in the world are you? I am originally from sunny central Florida, but recently relocated to sunny Southern California.
What is your favourite medium? Good old pencil and paper.... ink is fun too... I love collage as well. Which superhero power would you like the most and why? Probably to be invisible, because people would be seriously suspicious if they knew I could fly or had super strength all of asudden.
Who is the best villain ever? Dr. Claw
What was the last song you listened to? "Jaqueline" by Franz Ferdinand
Favourite quote/lyric? "When in Rome, we shall do as the Romans. When in Hell, we do shots at the bar." -ETID
Who has been the best client you have designed for? "I Wrestled a Bear Once" are the best peeps ever. They give me complete creative freedom, are super nice, and keep coming back for more artwork.
Who would you most like to collaborate with? Some dude by the name of Gauntlett
How many t-shirts do you own? Too many, yet not enough of the ones I have actually created.
