Againstbound or Hector to his friends, has been 'one to watch' on the design circuit. He has developed his style and skills ten fold since using threadless's notoriously harsh but helpful critics. New designers could learn a lot from Hector's approach.

Tell us a little about this design.
The great majority of my designs start from an idea rather than a sketch, I’m usually about building up an illustration from a concept rather than start drawing elements that look good together.
So this is basically me trying to make something more visually and less conceptually driven, I should do that a bit more often. I think what I like most about it is the cross between the more cartoonish and the “real” lightning bolts.

Where in the world are you?
A shitty little city in Mexico, about 4 hours away from the Texas border.

What is your favourite medium?
In the past year digital illustration has become my fave, mostly photoshop. I’m kind of sceptical about going back to my pencils and brushes, at least until they have ctrl + z.

Which superhero power would you like the most and why?
Probably too cliché, but flying. Just the feeling of being free and completely detached from the ground at will oughta be a great experience.

Who is the best villain ever?
Not sure if the best, but my all time fave is Carnage. Is the most basic and simplified villain there is, there’s no grand scheme driving him, there’s no master plan, he just lives to kill and inflict pain. He’s the purest psycho there is and it’s passionate about it without being pretentious.

What was the last song you listened to?
Left Brain Ambassadors by Spiritual Beggars

Favourite quote/lyric?
Really hard to say, but one that comes to mind is from Blade Runner: “The flame that burns twice as bright burns half as long.”
Lyrics would be even harder to choose from, there’s so many. I enjoy  lyrics from Opeth, Tool, Katatonia, At The Gates,Dark Tranquillity, etc.

Who has been the best client you have designed for?
I have yet  to make my first comissioned design, I’m still learning my way in the illustration world. But so far my biggest competiton site “client” is Threadless.

Who would you most like to collaborate with?
Hard to say, specially considering I’m such a bad team player. But I think a collaboration witha designer with a more sober and detailed style, Like Kneil Melicano, could be interesting.

How many t-shirts do you own?
About 60, most of them bought last year, so I think that number might double this year.
