Ahh, I really like this shirt! I wish I didn't have a bajillion brown shirts already (or maybe I don't....), but we'll see what happens. I've got a good 24ish hours to decide if I want it or not. =)
Oh damnit.... People without jobs should not be spending money on Tshirts. But I did say I liked this print even more than the sickiness of the last one. Time to bust open the change jar....
This time I have the money for Hydro's work, but honestly, even as beautiful as this design is, its just not something I would wear. The last design by Hydro a few days ago was me and would have been the best shirt for me, I still can't believe I didn't have the money for the shirt that day and missed out. I'm going to regret it forever.
I love this design, but it isn't really something I would wear. Amazing art, though. I would hang this on my wall without hesitation, though. Good job!
paintmeblue...you should frame it then if you think its that good :) I remember Layne stretches the shirts and frames them as art. I am about to do one like that as well.
Amazing interview. Thanks for your courage to share. I teach highschool and work mainly with kids who've been through alot. Although they can be a tough audience, I always feel it's a huge honour to work with them.
Throughout each semester I try to make it clear to them that I understand that even making it to school is, in itself, a victory. They need to hear more stories of success like yours. I'm sure you won't mind if I share.
Just wanted to add, that interview was nice. I support the patience part of art the most. When you keep at it though it's like puzzle pieces, the picture of where you want to go begin to make sense the more you explore the art you are into. I was lucky after I graduated college to link up with a writer to illustrate my first kids book and even though I have many styles I enjoy working in, it's through many many days and nights of picking away at what I knew I could make that really added up to a uniform story. ..
Anyways congrats on the print and keep defining your course, from the bottom up, if you keep going you'll keep going up.
I bought the mens small because I like the heather grey so much better. It's still going to be too big, but it'll do, and it's so much nicer than the brown!
Gorgeous gorgeous design. Nothing has been tempting me at ALL lately, but I bought this instantly.
Man I want that brown / gold shirt so bad, but I can not see myself wearing the womens version of this.
I kind of wish you only had 1 color option, so as to not let us keep going "man I like the womens / mens colors better"!
Or print some in both colors of each men and womens. Oh well, I really loved that design from seeing it on the sidebar from yesterday and bam here is the shirt of it...
the detail is amazing and the linework is overall awesome, but I'm not so sure about the 90 degree angles on something so rounded as the human form. aka, I'd much sooner buy it as a print than a shirt.
Your work is amazing. I first saw your work on a site a while back called inspiredology.com and have bookmarked it in my favorites. I'm a huge fan and hope your shirt sells well.
Well. A little known secret about me is that I came from a highly dysfunctional family. I came from a poor, abusive family and ended up spending a majority of my youth in various foster homes. I had to make a choice in high school to either live with my mom or to stay with a friend and stay in school due to circumstances which I won’t go into, thus I stayed in school. During High School and College, I had no parents I could rely on for support so I just found people to stay with and hustled during holidays to stay with friends. In college I was going for Teaching, but by a stroke of luck, or even karma, design found me. After a few people paying me for a few badly drawn illustrations, I got consumed by it and just started to learning. I ended up dropping out of college and working full time at odd jobs, but in my free time I spent countless hours just learning. So in essence, I started with nothing and now have a successful career.
Any advice for aspiring designers?
My best advice I can offer a designer who is new or is struggling to find a voice for himself or herself is to define your goals. Meaning, start asking yourself where is it that you want to be or where you want to land that job. Design in general is so subjective, and a million paths to different spots in the career as a designer, illustrator, or even fine artist.. There isn’t any one path that really takes you to the right job. However much like an Atlas, if you define where you want to go, you can start mapping out what you need to learn and what you need to be influenced by. Also, avoid the ‘want it now’ attitude. Patience is extremely important. Lastly, do not hate anyone or anyone’s design. Those who spread hate rather than giving proper insight on a critque should be ignored. Realize that if you spend a day mad at something then that is precious time that you lost. Find comfort in your friends and loved ones. Lastly, have a vice. May it be a hot cup of tea, coffee, or just collecting something. That vice will help you step away in moments when things are not clicking correctly and allow you a few moments to relax and rethink your approach.
What are your longterm goals/dreams?
I want to just enjoy life and continue doing what I’m doing. There are some major plans underway to define better where I want to end up, but I can’t really go into details as of yet. At the end of the day, my goal is to maintain relevance in the market, gain respect among those I respect and work for, and not to live in vein.
Hydro 74 and Pale Horse Design will be presenting an unique art show November 22nd in St. Petersburg, Florida. The Back in Black T-Shirt Exhibit, showcasing limited-edition, one-color t-shirt designs, will be highlighting the artwork of the designers whose art you’ve probably been collecting in your closet for years, as well as to establish the t-shirt as a new medium for fine art.
