Ultraman Hot Rod Action!
About the artist
Tell us the background of this design...
As a kid I loved watching Ultraman on afternoon TV, then rediscovered it as a young adult. Now I have a huge collection of Japanese toys, I love the wild creativity and weirdness of them all. I like to add odd juxtapositions to my drawings, like Ultraman, Ultraman Leo and two of their bitter enemies ( Gomorah and Baltan Seijin ) just having a good time in their hot rod. Ultraman Leo playing some surf guitar...The kanji text says "Action" in the background, and "Ultraman" on the side of the car...I hope it says that anyways.
Age/Sex/Location-How long have you been an artist? What kind of artists are you?
I've been around for a minute, I'm 43 and live in Northeast Ohio. I lived in Germany for a few years, and Pittsburgh for several years. I'm an art school drop out...I did a lot of punk rock gig posters in my youth for my band, quit doing art for awhile then started back up a couple years ago. I guess if I had to label myself I would be a semi-skilled cartoony illustrator that loves kaiju.
Where do you find inspiration?
Largely from Japanese kids books, TV show related stuff, medieval engravings, and some of the icons- Big Daddy Roth, Robert Williams, Herge', Basil Wolverton, Basil Gogos... Looking at monster toys, 50's and 60's architecture and styles...Gearhead magazine....Super 7 magazine...most of all, the amazing artists at www.gigposters.com !
What do you love more than anything in the world?
Easy one, spending time with my wife and daughter.
What do you do when you're not creating art?
I have a regular job that's totally not art related, its pretty awesome. Other than that I like to go see bands, check out other artists shows, museums, travel....
Any wisdom you would like to impart to aspiring artists?
Do what you want regardless of others approval or disdain. Remember you have a unique talent, don't take it for granted even when you feel like you suck ass. Suck it up and drive on.
Anything you would like to promote or say to the public?
Hope you dig my shirt, teefury rules!
