About the artist
Tell us a bit about this design.
Back in 1978 they brought out the Space range of models, it was completely different to everything they’d done before but it was exactly the sort of thing I’d been building. This was a year after Star Wars came out and it made me a very happy little boy. The badge that the spacemen had on their chests was a little spaceship flying round a moon and this has always stuck with me. The other day inspiration struck and I saw the little ship as Serenity, possibly because my lovely wife was going on (again) about what an unappreciated masterpiece Serenity was while I was trying to build something cool.
Where are you from?
Originally I’m from Blackpool (the original model for Las Vegas) but since University home has been Leeds. That’s in the UK if you prefer.
What do you want TeeFury fans to know about you?
If they ever meet me I’m not quite as scary as I might look.
What do you absolutely not want them to find out?
Where the bodies are buried.
Name a few of your favorite things.
New pencils and big bits of paper, a really good story, ice cold Guinness, hanging out with my daughter, Lego, loud music. I can keep going if you like?
What kind of art did you make as a kid?
I like to think of it as abstract expressionism but mostly it was throwing paint at paper and then rolling around in it. Once I got some fine motor skills, one of my first real drawings was of Rupert the Bear, after that I never looked back. Cartoon characters, spaceships, superheroes, monsters you know, cool stuff.
What is your favorite thing about outer space?
The infinite possibilities, everything might be out there.
Cowboys vs. astronauts: which would win the battle?
Astronauts worry about getting holes in their suits too much so I think the cowboys have got it in the bag.
Describe your favorite shirt that you own, and why you like it so much.
Favourite shirt is like favourite band or favourite movie, it’s all about the day. Today it’s a star wars/monsters inc mash up with Boo as Princess Leia sitting on Chewbacca/Sully’s shoulders. My daughter bought it for me and it rocks.
Which is better, gaming, reading, or watching movies? Name your favorite title in your chosen medium.
Reading by a million miles because it’s the best combination of being told a story and using your imagination. I can’t pick a favourite book but I’m reading Dracula Cha Cha Cha by Kim Newman at the moment so I’ll recommend his Anno Dracula series. I also have to mention Pratchett’s Discworld, Skullduggery Pleasant, The Dark Tower series and Haruki Murakami.
What inspires your work?
It all comes from pixies and additives
Any shout outs?
So many lovely people but I’ll keep it short. Natasha and Lulu are top of the list and I’ve got to mention Grom as the only man I know who owns more t-shirts than me. Also the elves at Tee fury who picked my design deserve a big hug.
