About the artist
Tell us about this design.
A homage to one of my favorite Ghibli films, I designed this in the hope that I'd get a shirt to wear out of it :)
Where are you from?
A tiny little town called Halesworth in Suffolk, east England. If you've seen the film 'The Village' it's a bit like that, with less creatures.
How did you get started designing t-shirts?
My brother collects graphic shirts, and they were a big influence when I began studying art. So a lot of my early illustrations were already being made in that shirt style, with limited colors and the right kind of dimensions - it was just a normal progression to start putting them on actual shirts.
What advice would you offer to aspiring designers?
Create, create, create. Don't be afraid to do things out of your comfort zone, and most of all you should enjoy it!
What would be your dream job?
I'd like to be able to work on large canvasses and rolls of paper as a professional fine artist, with an agent to deal with the business side of things. Maybe with a studio somewhere remote and cold, like Alaska or Finland.
What is your favorite thing about history?
That everyone is a part of it.
What would your ideal house be like?
It would have a spiral staircase, a domed roof, an indoor garden with an oak tree, a telephone box as a shower where the phone is the shower head, underground tunnels, and big open fires. Probably in Estonia.
Digital art vs. traditional art: which would win the battle?
It would be a drawn out and bloody war, with heavy casualties on each side. Traditional art would eventually fall to the progression of technology, but the victory would feel hollow amidst the devastation.
What was your favorite as a kid: comics, cartoons, or movies? Was there a specific title you liked most of all?
I used to get the Beano every week, and bash street kids was just fantastic, there was also Dennis the Menace, and Roger The Dodger. Classic stuff.
What are a few of your favorite websites?
My favorite sites are all my nemeses. Cracked, itsnicethat, kongregate - they all make procrastinating too easy!
Any shout outs?
Big love to Suffolk
