You're In My Spot
About the artist
Tell us a bit about this design.
I give my wife credit for this one, she is a huge fan and suggested I do something simple based on the show. We put our heads together to decide on something that fans would recognize from the series and came up with Sheldon's phrase to anyone who sits on his part of the sofa, "You're in my spot."
Where are you from?
I was born outside Chicago and moved to Dallas when I was young, so I grew up and now reside north of Big D.
What do you want TeeFury fans to know about you?
Besides the obvious fact that I'm a Star Wars, Star Trek and Comics collector, I also collect graphic Style Guides and Film Score music. I have a huge collection of both, somewhere in the neighborhood of 165 Style Guides and I don't even know how many film scores I own. If anyone out there in the TeeFury Universe collects them like I do, I'm always open to trading!
What do you absolutely not want them to find out?
That I'm a fan of ABC's Once Upon a Time or maybe where I buried the bodies. Pick one.
Name a few of your favorite things.
Unconditionally, I'm a huge fan of all things Star Wars, Star Trek, Comics, Indiana Jones, The Marx Brothers, etc....you all know the drill.
What kind of art did you make as a kid?
Comics, mainly Marvel. A lot of Star Wars...TONS of it, drawings, movies, sculpture, whatever I could do to reflect the passion I had for the Original Trilogy. And notice I capitalized "Original Trilogy", yeah, it means that much to me.
What is your favorite thing about being an art director?
The collaboration I have with an outstanding creative team is the most important thing, we truly stand together and I'm energized by it daily. But my favorite thing is that we have fun, we laugh and enjoy our work as well as each other, that's my favorite.
Nerds vs. jocks: which would win the battle?
I believe the Nerds have won, I mean "Friday Night Lights" went off the air last year and "Big Bang Theory" is still going strong.
Describe your favorite shirt that you own, and why you like it so much.
I have a black t-shirt with a one-color white illustration of The Marx Brothers by Al Hirschfeld on the front. I love it because graphically it's simple, I'd wear it every day if I could but I don't because I want it to last forever.
Which is better, gaming, reading, or watching movies? Name your favorite title in your chosen medium.
Am I allowed to nail reading and watching movies with one one stone if I say "watching movies with subtitles"? Anyway, I'm still digging into the Avengers Blu-ray, I'm looking forward to the whole iPad sync thing that it does. As far as Blu-rays go as a whole, you can't beat the extended "Lord of the Rings" set, it's still astonishing to watch.
What inspires your work?
I'd have to say the learning process. I still spend hours at comic book shows watching artists like Adam Hughes and Steve Rude fearlessly breathe life into an illustration in no time flat. By the same token I learn just as much from my fellow creatives at work, it's truly inspirational when it all comes together and you've learned something new from it.
Any shout outs?
My wife, who moved me to design this T-Shirt. Family and friends of course, they stand behind everything I do. All my colleagues at Idea Planet in Dallas. And last but not least, my fellow Art Director and TeeFury contributor extraordinaire, Corrose, who got me into all this T-Shirt stuff in the first place!
