About the artist
Tell us about this design.
H.P. Lovecraft is probably my favorite writer ever. I spent half a year writing a diploma thesis about his influence on popular culture and another year on writing and drawing a graphic novel based on his stories. I love putting his work through a cartoon filter – and it felt right to mash up Lovecraft with this iconic image.
What is your most unexpected or exciting memory?
All of my most unexpected, crazy memories come from my journey to India when I was 19. Green birds, monkeys chasing after dogs and stealing food from market places, free running cows in the middle of a foggy, catholic graveyard, people beating up a guy with bamboo sticks and little kittens being born under a Chai-cart are just a small part of those memories.
If you could make anyone besides yourself Ruler of the Universe, who would you choose and why?
John Cleese. He is the funniest man ever. My new ruler must be funny!
Do you have any surprising talents or hobbies?
I can create a loud snapping noise by whipping my index finger against my middle finger. It sounds like my fingers are cracking, I like freaking out people with that.
Would you rather face Cthulhu or Godzilla?
I think I could convince Cthulhu to fight on my side by giving him mint chocolate chip cookies and face Godzilla with him. In the end, we would all drink tea and take over control of the universe.
Horror vs. fantasy: which would win the battle?
I have been in a crazy fantasy phase for over two years now. I think I have worked my way through over 25 fantasy books in the past 12 months. Fantasy wins because it has magic, swords, dragons and shit. It loses a lot too because a lot of fantasy is filled with annoying, brain-scrambling clichés. I LOVE when Fantasy has strong horror elements, though!
Describe your ideal day.
It’s 1927 – New York. I wake up to the smell of freshly brewed coffee – my butler, a wooden animatronic puppet based on Edgar Allen Poe, brings me my breakfast to the bed. I look over into the corner – my own, private Tardis is still there, waiting to go anywhere. But today, I will just relax. But wait! A young, handsome man is waiting in my detective office, in need of an important case to be solved! His uncle Lovecraft has been kidnapped by cultists! A call my old crew, Marie Curie, Mary Shelley, Nikola Tesla and Albert Einstein and we plan a dramatic rescue mission that brings us to a secret base hidden in the city of R’lyeh in the ocean. We fight Cthlhu and defeat him with SCIENCE!!! We all have tea and cake on the Empire State Building at 5 pm.
