Tell us a bit about this design.
Maurice Sendak is one of my biggest influences, and his death took my by surprise and totally ruined my day. I felt compelled to make a little tribute drawing.
Where are you from?
I'm originally from Brisbane Australia, but I'm living in New York City now.
What do you want TeeFury fans to know about you?
I have a book coming out soon, called Theodore Tea.
What do you absolutely not want them to find out?
Lots of things, probably.
Name a few of your favorite things.
Drawing, writing, playing guitar, looking at art, reading, listening to music. Also, I have a soft spot for British black comedy.
What kind of art did you make as a kid?
I liked to write little stories and draw the accompanying pictures. I can't remember, to be honest. I think I drew lots of pictures of Scrooge McDuck.
What is your favorite thing about hand-drawn text?
I think it has much more personality than computer type. Every letterer/typographer's style says something about them. Type has a lot of room for experimentation, too. I like playing with the letterforms and I usually try to make a piece of type interact with itself somehow. I like to make crossbars flow into other letters, or make descenders hook into the next word. There are endless options, and it's always fun to approach a new piece of type and work out what possibilities are available for that particular combination of letters.
Mysterious forest vs. hidden lake: which would win the battle?
I'll say forest. I don't really understand why they're fighting though.
Describe your favorite shirt that you own, and why you like it so much.
I got a Neutral Milk Hotel t-shirt when I saw Jeff Mangum in Baltimore last year. Unfortunately, it got ruined. Somebody must have put a load of bleach in the washing machine before I used it, and now it has orange blotches all over it.
Which is better, gaming, reading, or watching movies? Name your favorite title in your chosen medium.
Reading. I like gaming quite a lot, but I definitely spend much more time reading, particularly if comics count. Craig Thompson's new book Habibi is extremely impressive. How he manages to create such massive tomes is beyond me. I find it hard enough to finish a picture-book! Comic book artists must have incredible dedication.
What inspires your work?
I always find it extremely hard to answer this question. Art that I like, things that I notice, experiences that I have. Everything, really.
