About the artist
Michiel Nieuwstraten
Tell us about this design.
I had a great English teacher in high school, who showed us Monty Python movies in class.
The tag line 'It's just a fleshwound' is something I mumble to myself quite often when I hurt myself, something that happens quite often.
Where are you from?
I live in Dordrecht, with my wife and son, one of the oldest cities in Holland.
When you mention Dordrecht to other people in Holland they usually say 'Hoe dichter bij Dordt, hoe rotter het wordt'
Meaning the closer you get to Dordrecht, the more horrible it get's :)
How did you get started designing t-shirts?
My first design was a Dr. Mario / Grey's anatomy parody ('the original McDreamy'), something I came up with while being forced to watch Grey's Anatomy with my wife. It's a terrible design looking back now, but at the time it really convinced me to keep trying.
What advice would you offer to aspiring designers?
Keep trying! If you love to do this, just keep trying. I still have a lot to learn, but I see some improvement with every new design I make.
What would be your dream job?
At the moment 'stay at home dad'. I'm writing this with my newborn son Dex (2 days old now) lying next to me. It's really one of the greatest things in the world. Hopefuly my answers will make some sense after two longs nights with little sleep.
What is your favorite thing about sports?
Not playing them any more. I've started cycling to keep in shape, I'm currently at 4 x 20 minutes cycling in almost a year, so there might be some room for improvement.
What would your ideal house be like?
Castle Grayskull (note to self, go to Ebay and find the vintage Castle Grayskull Playset for my son).
Robocop vs. Terminator: which would win the battle?
Robocop!
What was your favorite as a kid: comics, cartoons, or movies? Was there a specific title you liked most of all?
Definitely Cartoons and Movies, I haven't read much Comics. Might catch up on those when I reach pension age, starting with Watchmen.
What are a few of your favorite websites?
The Daily What and Super Punch are two sites I visit quite often. Also, Shirtoid is great when I need some inspiration.
Any shout outs?
I've got three, one for my newborn son Dex, I hope you will become everything you want to become.
The second one is for my wife, I'm really proud of her.
And the third one is for two of my good friends, Henk Haverplank & Freddy Minder, whose great tunes are always an inspiration.
