"dont beleive everything msnbc or fox tells you bro, it isnt healthy"
listen to your own advice.
Then go look up everything about McCain and the Keating five. Personally in this economic climate I think those sort of (close, very personal) associations are far more important than the extremely casual ties that Obama has to anything or anyone people have been trying to tar his reputation with.
indievik: The classic approach for Limbaugh and his ilk is to blame the media when their candidate isn't doing well. It's all part of the talking points. If you've ever seen a Daily Show video montage, you know that Republicans all always say the same things about the same issues.
my favorite part about the shirt is that it has sparked political debate on a website like this. if we're going to debate about something poignant, let's talk about something more along the lines of the best song of the 1980s...but seriously, nice shirt.
"Thomas Joseph, the business manager of Local 50 of the United Association of Plumbers, Steamfitters and Service Mechanics, based in Toledo, said Thursday that Mr. Wurzelbacher had never held a plumbers license, which is required in Toledo and several surrounding municipalities. He also never completed an apprenticeship and does not belong to the plumbers union, which has endorsed Mr. Obama. On Thursday, he acknowledged that he does plumbing work even though he does not have a license."
I am admittedly very happy that within 24 hours, the only talking point McCain bothered with all night became a punchline. Which I suppose is fair, since that's how long it took his VP choice to become a punchline.
As for the political aspect and potential arguments, I generally insist people check out factcheck.org whenever possible regarding political nonsense. They're probably the most unbiased source I've seen around, unless you're irrational and can't grasp sourced factchecking.
I couldn't believe it when they started spittin' "Yo Mama Jokes" like it was a battle at Freaknik in ATL circa 1995.
I thought Palin and Biden had some good volleys, but then Obama dropped the bomb on Palin which made the whole auditorium rumble like there was a 9.5 bustin' loose on the ritcha' scale.
I thought it was kind of a cheap shot, being that Palin was at a disadvantage being a Mom herself, and also Obama was dirty dirty by peeping shiiiiiiii about her daughter.
It was tight though.

Same here. Does it really matter if he's licensed or not ? Really? To point it out is to join in the attempt to drag Joe through the mud.

Same here. I was about to hit "Buy Now" before I noticed the unlicensed part. Make another one tomorrow with that and I'll buy two.
The most important thing to remember is that WE are all incredible Americans and great Human Beings. Thanks to this Great country that allows us to express our opinions and personal beliefs without prejudice or discrimination.
I honestly don't think McCain will win, and if my gut feeling on this is true, Palin will hang around after their defeat and appear on a few talk shows as a curiosity, but that's about it. Media like Fox TV might dig her up periodically for her opinion, but she'll get short shrift from any other nationwide networks. She'll fade out as a once-interesting anomaly, and go back to terrorizing her staff in Alaska until she's voted out of office. She and First Dude will then argue about whether she should do a Playboy spread for ten million, then divorce. She'll hem and haw, then accept the Playboy offer, but they'll say too late, you're no longer the draw you once were. She'll end up doing commentary for some local Anchorage TV station for a few years, then retire to work as a taxidermist.
If it didn't have that 'unlicensed' part I would have bought it. It twists what could be perfect political satire for an annoying catch phrase into a meaningless, targeted jab.
We can of course update the art (we got permission) - if the folks who have already purchased don't mind, we can change the word to something more generic like "Quality" -
What do you guys think? If you have purchased the tee would you be bummed if we removed the word Unlicensed and switched it for Quality?
and if you are on the fence on buying this tee - what word would you like to see there?
Yutfree: I DO bother with facts. It isn't innuendo, McCain took family vacations in that Charles Keating's private JET (for those of you that don't know, Charles Keating is an emblematic figure of the last economic crisis based on irresponsible deregulation). Which is not why I dislike him, I dislike him for his policies, but if we're going to talk about associations as reasons to not like someone or not vote for someone, McCain was a lot closer to actual wrongdoing.
That's a link from a CNN FACT CHECK. You'll also note that McCain's camp isn't denying it - probably because they can't.
Even if some individuals within ACORN DID perpetrate voter fraud, and Obama was involved with them, it isn't as if he was instructing those individuals to commit those actions. It's a super lose association and a huge leap of judgement.
Republicans have been committing voter fraud too, but nobody is tarring McCain with that brush, because it isn't fair to hold him accountable for all the actions of his supporters. Did you hear about the Virginia Tech students who were told by the local elections commissioner that they would lose benefits associated with their parents (like health insurance) if the re-registered at their college address, a statement which is BLATANTLY untrue?
smurfed up things happen on both sides of the aisle, by supporters of BOTH parties and both candidates. To hold either of them accountable for loose associations is junk politics. What should matter to you is what the candidates themselves actually DO, what they themselves support and encourage, and what they want to do for America and for you and your family.
Go read the actual policy statements of both candidates, then go read their voting records, then go decide which candidate is more in line with your beliefs and which one you think will be instrumental in providing the change this country so obviously needs.
Regardless of which side you stand on, I will uphold your right to vote, as we live in a republic...
However, on the subject of licensure, it IS important and it DOES make a difference. Doctors are licensed; as are contractors, pharmacists, audiologists, dentists, speech-language pathologists, cosmetologists; attorneys; plumbers; nurses; the list is endless.
Licensure ensures that the practitioner has met requirements to practice the profession to a specified set of standards. Generally speaking, to obtain a license you must complete a specific course of study and an internship under another licensed professional. You must succesfully pass an exam and to renew your license you must complete continuing education hours.
You get what you pay for. Hire an unlicensed person; take your chances.
Proud granddaughter of a licensed, bonded, insured Master Plumber.
Is the wrench on the right supposed to say ".A.S.U" under Pexto? It looks like whoever flipped the image forgot to correct that text. If you change anything, change that. I think "Unlicensed" is a dig on the guy but it's a valid dig and, like you said, part of the joke.
IMO, jimiyo's comments have probably been the most factual, thought out, and the only opinions spoken without ulterior motive in this entire thread. It seriously pains me to believe that so many of the people here actually believe the "facts" they spew when linking news organizations to act like they know what they are talking about. Regurgitating "information" perpetrated across international news and somehow thinking you are adding to an intelligent discussion is a fools errand, since anyone intelligent would have referenced those same "facts" before entering into said conversation. When you have absolutely no direct information on the subject and are simply expelling the exact smurf you are told to be outraged about, it just makes you look like blind sheep following the scteefurycopy you were handed, no less than the politicians do in their speeches (which hopefully none of us admire).
It was a funny thing that I believe everyone can laugh at to take away from the debate that Mr. The Plumber was referred to so much. I have no clue whether he was a licensed plumber (regardless of what the "news" says, neither do you in reality), I don't know if he needs to be licensed because I don't actually know the work he does, and I honestly don't give a rat's ass, since it should have absolutely nothing to do with who is elected president.
Of course, now the political slandering will start digging into my life and will ultimately determine I don't in fact have a rat's ass to give.
Right, if the guy is working on my house, I care. But otherwise, it doesn't matter. There is so much more about it that can be made fun of. Like how does a (hypothetical) $250,000 salary plumber come to stand for the common voter? Or even the common small business owner?
Bluchez is merely trying to expose you to a truth about media.
Also you didn't really determine to what he doesn't give a rat's ass.
Just because he doesn't give a rat's ass about what the political candidates, moreover what the media has to say about what they say, doesn't mean that he doesn't have something to say about the overall condition of a nation who are blindly accepting of what they see in the media as something of importance or of relevant truth.
I certainly hope you're going to print the "unlicensed" version for everyone who ordered prior to your update. Else you might have some very unhappy buyers.
Of coarse this Joe dude has nothing to do with who you should vote for, it's exactly the point Obama has been trying to make, the old politics of distraction is a waste of time. There are like Nula said, issues that matter to you, read about our candidates stances on them from multiple sources, and make sure you re-register to vote if you haven't already. I will add my point of view, that I think if you liked the last eight years, going from 1.03/gal the day Bush took office to 400% increase with record breaking profits for corps, then you will love McCain. But I'm tired of that direction, it's time to bring some compassion and attention to the people, not the big co's that provide the so called confidence in our economy.
No more political tees! Wasn't there a forum post question about this some time ago? I seem to remember it was pretty overwhelmingly on the side of not having them here.
When his familial connection to Charles Keating becomes this story's focus (probably tonight, or after the weekend) is when it's all gonna become really interesting to watch.
OK, I need to address the back-and-forth above about the media and how we can't believe anything they tell us.
Frankly, to get through life, we need a certain amount of faith in this world. You hear a report in the morning that it's going to rain, you bring an umbrella with you on your way to work. If the report is consistently wrong, then you end up not paying attention to what they're saying and you tune in elsewhere.
If you treat everything by every media figure with an equal amount of skepticism, then you're doing yourself a disservice. Should you follow blindly whatever any media source tells you? Of course not. You find out who is (generally) reliable and who is (generally) not. If you don't have at least one source that you sort-of trust then how would you, for example, figure out who to vote for? How would you figure out which stocks to buy or what books are worth reading or what movies are worth seeing? Certainly, you can answer "well, I can rely on my friends for that", but what is a friend but a source that you trust? If your friend ran a blog and listed their recommendations there, would that make them somehow less trustworthy?
One can't go through life verifying every single fact you come across. You would lose your mind (not to mention all your free time). You take it on faith that, should a source you consider reliable screw up a fact, some other journalist will correct them, b/c there is money/prestige at stake in making their competitor look foolish.
I'm as cynical as the next guy, but it definitely is possible to overdo the cynicism thing. You get too cynical and you end up being as uninformed and out-of-touch as the most credulous amongst us.
Oh, and Layne, if this community has shown you anything, it's that it's not capable of handling anything that is political in the slightest. Someone always has to take it personally and believe that teefury is part of some [insert ideology here] conspiracy. I think your political tees have been pretty innocuous for the most part, but obviously I'm in the minority.
Myself, I would've bought the "unlicensed" version, but for the fact that I feel like the joke will have a relatively short shelf-life. I love the silver men's shirt color, though, and hope to see it soon on a design I'd buy.
I haven't seen this very critical question answered anywhere yet:
I purchased the "unlicensed" version this morning.
Will I receive the shirt I ordered, or this "updated" version?
Because by changing the "punch-line" of the shirt, you have essentially taken a democrat-leaning shirt and made it well... not.
I would not purchase the shirt as it stands now, and if I am not going to receive the product that I purchased, then I will need to cancel my order.
I get that teefury is a community, and I'm a huge fan, but this is still a form of bait and switch if these two designs are not sold separately and orders for the original are not honored.
It was pure chance that I stopped back by the site today and saw the switch. How many other people who bought the original version won't stop back by to see this discussion?
Will they be opening their packages to a surprise when their shirt arrives?
Everyone who orderd the LICENSED Version will get this tee with the original word "Unlicensed" on the graphic! - Sorry I should have made that more clear before - you will get what you paid for we promise!! ;)
Everyone who has ordered this updated design will get the word "Quality" on the tee instead of the Unlicensed print - we will be printing both versions ;)
let me know if you have any more questions - and BTW - did you see?? we now have International shipping!
Thought I would add to Layne and the good people running this site, one thing I like about this site is the designs are very varied, I wouldn't stop the political tee prints, I thought the first version was hilarious but the second still funny. If some people can't handle a lil fire into the forum, it's gone by tonight, no harm done.
Musashi - shoot a not to service (at) teefury.com - and we will see what we can do - however I cant make any promises at this point - but we will see, if we have etra of the "unlicensed" version then we can take care of you - but we may not - which would mean you would be stuck with the Quality version ;/
