Tell us a bit about this design.
It's based on a Norman Rockwell painting - I always enjoyed how Dexter was sort of an aesthete when it came to his bloody business, and every crime scene was kind of like going to an art show for him. There's also the fact that Norman Rockwell's work is basically the antithesis of Dexter Morgan and I thought it made for an interesting design.
Where are you from?
I'm currently roaming about in Portland, OR via upstate New York.
What do you want TeeFury fans to know about you?
I'm super tough and devilishly handsome. I have many valuable skills. If the apocalypse happens, you definitely want me as a high-ranking member of your new society. I can fly and read minds. I am the best.
What do you absolutely not want them to find out?
The validity of prior claims.
Name a few of your favorite things.
Art - all kinds! Music, hiking, the woods, good conversation and a hot meal. Pop culture wise - The Tick, Donjon, Jean-Luc Picard and the Coen Brothers have all staked out fairly large territories within my subconscious mind.
What kind of art did you make as a kid?
I would generally draw maps of all the islands that would one day make up my wondrous empire. Following that, lots of guys yelling in the margins of papers as an expression of pubescent rage.
What is your favorite thing about winter?
I love the snow and the temperature dynamics of a wintery day - that feeling of walking into a warm house from the chilly outside. One of my favorite feelings is working up a sweat so that you can take your coat off while outside. One of my favorite parts of an old job was shoveling the walks of a whole apartment complex. By the end you're down to a tee shirt and its twenty-five degrees.
Dinner vs. dessert: which would win the battle?
I tend to find the whole dinner vs. dessert argument to be something of a smokescreen against far more significant mealtime concerns. Besides, what is dessert? If I eat ice cream and then a salad, which one is dessert? If we can make cake into something healthy, does it remain dessert? How can we truly quantify something that seems to me to be within the eye of the beholder? I try not to live my life by false binaries.
Describe your favorite shirt that you own, and why you like it so much.
My gal got me a tee shirt with a couple detectives on the front investigating a crime scene. The crook, along with his bags of money, is printed on the inside of the shirt, which I adore. It's starting to fade a little but I like to think it'll be the robber that much harder to catch!
Which is better, gaming, reading, or watching movies? Name your favorite title in your chosen medium.
Reading holds a special place in my heart. Not only does it encompass comic books, which are probably my all-time favorite medium, but I think you just can't beat it when it comes to density of information. My favorite books of recent memory are probably 'Fortress of Solitude' by Johnathan Lethem and the Dungeon Series by Lewis Trondheim. There are a million great things out there - it's really hard to pick just one!
What inspires your work?
Everything! Most of all, I like the idea of giving things a life beyond what is immediately presented, or showing something in a different tone. Often times pop culture adheres to a limited palette of emotion in order to appeal to the most amount of people. It's fun to take something badass and reinvent it as awkward, or take something saccharine and give it a dark edge. Beyond that, it's about finding a process that I enjoy and letting it take me where it may.
