    Huh. I didn't notice anything racist about it on first glance. And yeah, I guess it does look racist, though I hadn't thought of it that way... if you're looking for it tho I can see it, I think. I guess it depends on what you're looking for in the character. To me it just looked like a goofy eggplant wizard with a funny cape and not even remotely human so I didn't associate it that way.

    There was an NES game, a Gameboy game, he was on the Captain N cartoon, he was in Super Smash Bros Brawl, and has a new game coming out in March .... awesome design

    I know nothing of this video game nor its characters. I am simply pointing out the racist sambo appeal of THIS design. Anyone who knows anything about American history -not what you were taught in your elementary school -will agree with the racist undertones, intentionally OR unintentionally, being displayed here. You can defend your video game all you like, but I'm calling it as I see it.

    Might get this shirt. I love Kid Icarus. It's pretty hilarious if you ask me. But the fact people are finding it racist kind of discourages me from making the purpose. I don't want people ignorant to the game to think I'm wearing something racist even though it isn't remotely racist unless you associate wizardry with witch doctors and then Africa or something stupid like that

    i really love that its a kid icarus design, but why god why must it be on that nasty yellow color? i think this same print would be sweet on a mid or light gray.

    props for a great design, but im afraid im going to have to pass this up :(

    Darn. I knew it was Icarus right off the bat and it's looks amazing, but I do not wear yellow. At all :( otherwise I'd have bought it. Great design though :) and for those saying it's very obscure, It seems a lot of people knew what it was right away. I've seen more obscure references come across here.

    Forget the wizardry, that's not what stands out the most. It's the eggplant factor, which racist Italians used to call Blacks, and then it's the Sambo-like lips. I admit the purple guy in the picture seems safe, but the eggplant on the shirt? I'd be shocked if it didn't cross the mind of this T-shirt designer. Nonetheless, shirt looks cool

    Aaargh, I loooove this. Kid Icarus my very favorite Nintendo game, when I was like 11 years old, and it still holds a special place in my heart. I can still hear the music... icarus fights medusa angels (cause I was an 11-year-old girl who was not very good at video games)!

    I just Googled Kid Lcarus to find out a little more before I commit to buying this (because of the controversy I'm feeling obliged to have this ). Anyhow, I've read that the character was always under the same scrutiny and suspicion.     Didn't mean anything derogatory by the design. In fact, I've displayed the illustration in galleries and nobody has ever made that comment to me. The design of the character comes directly from the original NES game. The wizard turn Icarus into an eggplant with legs. As you can see on this link to a screenshot of the game.

    It's not racist. I played Kid Icarus 'til my fingers bled, and that is a great depiction of the Eggplant Wizard, who kinda looked like a big ol' "mammy" caricature, anyway.

    This is subtly brilliant. I ordered mine.

    Remember folks that the Italian word for eggplant is also a derogatory term for African-Americans. Moulinare or mouli's which makes it just a touch more racist seeming.

    How the hell is Eggplant Wizard racist?
    Kid Icarus even though being incredibly hard is a huge cult following game from NES and now is getting a new game made for the 3DS. Probably gonna pick this up , kudos to the cool Greek Design.

    They should learn how to spell Icarus.

    What's the matter? A bunch of people didn't know what the shirt was a reference to at the start and felt out of place, so they have to try to make a big deal over something that's not even there?

    Honestly, I waited this long to buy this shirt because of the yellow colour. I wish this was blue and white. Greeky. Purple would have worked well too. Ultimately, this is such an obscure 80s Nintendo reference that I had to forgive the colour.
