The Sonic Mark VI
About the artistArt curated by
Tell us about this design.
This design came about through a collaboration with my brother. I’ll admit the most I remember about the show is the old trippy theme and opening sequence (at least back in the 80s or 70s reruns, not sure which). But I’ve been intrigued by the show’s growth in popularity. Plus I like sci-fi, time travel and robots. But getting back to the design, we wanted to do something a little different. We decided on a product logo/ad for a sonic screwdriver. I chose this version and my brother told me it was the Mark VI. He basically wrote all the text and I ran with the art part of it. We hope you like it.
Where are you from?
The Great White North (although south of Detroit, but still in Canada). Living in Minnesota now, which could still be considered the White North, I guess.
How would you describe your style?
I think the best way to describe my style would be vintage. I like the old travel, propaganda and product posters of the early 20th century. They are a great inspiration to draw from (pun intended). It shows a lot in what I do.
If you could collaborate with anyone else, who would you pick?
I’m going to go with my brother again (cue the sympathetic ‘aww’ from the audience). I think we have a couple of good sci-fi ideas in the wings. Did anyone say Battlestar Galactica?
What historical figure do you most admire?
Answered by my brother: Snoopy. Because of his unrelenting pursuit of that terror of the skies, the Red Baron. http://youtu.be/rNremK0cBEg
If you weren't designing shirts, what would you be doing?
Working at my day job as a web producer.
Would you rather be a mad scientist or a corrupt business tycoon?
A mad scientist. There’s less stress and more laughter.
Unicorn vs. pegasus: which would win the battle?
Hmmm. The Pegasus has an obvious advantage with the gift of flight, but no real weapons - except for “hooves from above”. The unicorn has a built-in sword, but would have a tough time getting close enough to use it. I’ll choose the unicorn because what goes up must come down - sometime.
What is your favorite t-shirt color?
Brown or black. Or dark gray. Something dark.
What has been your favorite vacation or travel experience?
Answered by my brother: Out of body is the only way to fly.
Any shout outs?
Of course. To my wife who supports my geeky endeavors. To my kids who ‘like’ what I do. To my brother who made this design come alive with his Who knowledge. To the RBA and RBC (you know who you are) who are a wealth of inspiration and know-how when it comes to the world of pop culture and parody art. And to all TeeFurians who keep this dream alive.
