Tell us about this design.
I created it as a mash-up of the two most self-deprecating pop icons.
Where are you from?
I was born in Monterey, California, but hopped around the globe every few years as a Navy Brat. I spent most of my time in Maryland, New York, and Florida, but Maine and England were home to some of my favorite formative years. I call Denver home for the moment.
How did you get started designing t-shirts?
I created an original design in 2007 for my table at MoCCA, but the resulting screen print didn’t turn out and I was left holding 300 un-sellable shirts. It wasn’t until last October after my trek from NYC to Colorado that I revisited the idea of shirt design to fill some time between freelance illustration gigs. Teefury produced my first shirt, now lost to the ether.
What advice would you offer to aspiring designers?
Design something you’d want to wear. Eventually, one of those ideas will resonate with an audience.
What would be your dream job?
Cashing million dollar checks made out to me. Also, writing and illustrating children’s books. To that end, I’m self publishing a trilogy next year.
What is your favorite thing about the beach?
a surfer beach = the dude-ity
a secluded beach = the secludity
a nude beach = the barbeque
What would your ideal house be like?
The realization of my childhood secret superhero lair scribblings. It may be impractical, but jet packs and shark infested moats make up for the lack of a kitchen or bathroom.
Carnival vs. state fair: which would win the battle?
The carnival has the rides. The state fair has the prize-winning pigs. The Ren Faire beats both with its giant turkey legs and comely wenches.
What was your favorite as a kid: comics, cartoons, or movies? Was there a specific title you liked most of all?
I loved ‘em all. I grew up in the Saturday Morning Cartoon era with Shirt Tales, Mr. T, and Masters of the Universe. My first comics were garage sale DC tales and the black and white TMNT books. I went to the movies as much as I could. My favorite then and now is Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure, a movie that encompasses all genres and celebrates the medium.
