Tell us about this design.
This design combines my love of Gigers Alien with Jackass style pranks.
Where are you from?
I hail from a small town in the North East of England, caught smack between the North Yorkshire Moors of American Werewolf in London and the industrial wasteland that inspired local boy Ridley Scott when he created the cityscapes of Blade Runner. It's not nearly as exciting as it sounds.
How did you get started designing t-shirts?
I studied Fashion in Manchester, home of the legendary Morgue, and so my first job was creating Tee Prints for kids clothing at a factory in deepest, darkest Yorkshire. It was a grim place, but there amidst the gloom and grime I learnt everything I needed to know to rock a four colour print. Then Threadless printed my Corporate Zombie tee, and I realised the joys of putting monsters on a tee!
What advice would you offer to aspiring designers?
Unfortunately there are as many different roads to success as there are successful designers. However two pieces of advice I always subscribe to are follow your instincts and never miss a deadline.
What would be your dream job?
What I'm doing now, but for much more money! Drawing pictures for a living is a job I never take for granted, and not a day goes by where I don't count myself lucky that it's what I get to do. Once, at a wedding, someone asked me what I did for a living. It felt so good to say 'Illustrator'. Till he sneered and said "Well I suppose someone has to." I soon realised the uneducated ape obviously had no idea what an illustrator was. Lucky for him an Illustrator isn't a member of the deadly ninja commando team.
What is your favorite thing about horror movies?
First of all, I love being scared witless. Gore doesn't really do it for me, but Paranormal Activity, Blair Witch, The Shining - movies that really stay with you in the dark - just rock my face off. I also never had a VCR as a kid and grew up in a country with only four TV channels. The only movies I ever got to see on the small screen I had to stay up late for and nine times out of ten they were either Universal Monster movies or Hammer Horror.
What would your ideal house be like?
Probably Arnies house in Commando, but with less killer mercenaries stealing my kids. Or maybe the super 80's penthouse from '3 Men and a Baby'. Ho ho, men...changing a nappy?! Get outta here with your crazy comedy!
Squid vs. submarine: which would win the battle?
How big a squid are we talking? What about Old Boy Vs Octopus? Nasty!
What was your favorite as a kid: comics, cartoons, or movies? Was there a specific title you liked most of all?
Hrnnnnghhh...That was the sound of my mind dividing itself up and having a cage fight within my skull! Impossible to choose, but if I had to think about it movies got the greatest investment from me so I'd have to go there. I was the perfect age to get swept up by the likes of Back to the Future, Goonies, Gremlins and Indiana Jones so basically anything Spielberg brushed up against in the mid 80's.
What are a few of your favorite websites?
Topless Robot, Clutter Magazine, Freddy in Space and Strange Kids Club are my daily stopping points. As a freelancer working on my own, these are the only way to keep in touch with the outside world of likeminded souls.
