I would say this has to be explained much more than most shirts. If I wear a buffy shirt people may not know its buffy but I can just tell them its a buffy shirt. Same question here and I have to explain this long thing that means more to the artist than me.

  • Sharkysaid 33 weeks ago

As someone said above, too "boxy" for me... but I REALLY like it.

As for needing an explanation, why does it need one in the first place? Seriously. I don't like the "popular" shirts like Doctor Who and Star Wars. Don't buy them, never will. I don't care for them. I LIKE artsy shirts. Art doesn't need an explanation.

  • DesiredFXsaid 33 weeks ago

I agree: this one can't really be figured out by looking at it. Too much explaining required.

I can point out that my BrBa t-shirt is BrBa and those that know the show will get it. Same with my Dexter shirt.

This one would be "Well, see, the kid has a smart phone, and he's got an app on it that's supposed to scare off bears." Too much.

    Not that it's a bad gag...just not a great t-shirt.
  • dummyctsaid 33 weeks ago

wow, this looks amazing and totally reminds me of The Mars Volta's video to Televators *sigh* such a great & sad video

anyway: great stuff, amazing illustration skills.

and WHO on EARTH explains his or her shirts to ANYONE?! srlsy ... did you ever do that, ever?! because I own a lot of weird shirts and never had to explain a single one to anybody. it works like that: people don't understand yr shirt, people think they're too stupid "to get it", therefore people feel too embarrassed to ask ... done

But I LOVE BEARS!!! This one just fell into my basket.
  • cubanpetesaid 33 weeks ago

I agree about the explanations. Im not sure about iphone apps being 'popular culture' as such. Things like that are more for people who sit in front of a computer/phone all day.
A lot of the shirts on here I dont 'get' because they are niche things, like shirts relating to pubs/bars in films. Who remembers the name of the bar in some film (that was probably ok at best) apart from the anoraks who've watched it umpteen times. I hate to use the term 'nerds' but...
Shirts like the Flash camera are more popular culture because its er.. more popular. (im guessing it was Flash Gordon related. See? Pop-u-luar). Flash Gordon = timeless. Angry Birds = popular for a bit until the next game comes out. (In 3d probably). Its all so soul-less now. Flash Gordon will probably be remade soon. In 3D. Then turned into a trilogy (or more). Ker-ching! Then forgotten because it was smurf.

  • styggiesaid 33 weeks ago

"Bear Repellent: There's no app for that"

Seriously guys, is that really so hard to say? Because if it takes more explaining than that, it's not the shirt's fault, it's the people you surround yourself with. Move on, don't buy the shirt, you won't have to explain it, the sky won't fall in.

Explaining a reference someone might not get is not the same as explaining the overall concept of a design.
  • ianleinosaid 33 weeks ago

I love the tone and mood of this design, and the rest of the artist's work as well. Great print! Congrats!
  • vengrosaid 33 weeks ago

I don't get the explanation. How do we know it doesn't work? We only see him using it, not the after math. Plus, he seems really happy and the bears don't seem scary or angry. I'm also not really understanding how the illustration is connected to the phrase at all.

But with that said, the illustration itself is very nice. I think if the application drawing was clearer then it wouldn't even need the explanation at all and would simply be a visual gag. It's hard to get "no bears" from the app picture.
  • SmoothVincesaid 33 weeks ago

spunkycomics said: It's a bit square on the edges for me... I really enjoy the concept though!

While I love the design for it vibe and subtlety, it's indeed a bit of a shame that the center light source wasn't used to make the design more circular. Would've blended with the whole shirt real nicely.

I just think that the beauty of Teefury shirts is that your wearing an inside joke amongst a fan base that your theoretically a part of.

This shirt is like wearing a design that is an inside joke amongst one person. I am not hating the art. As an artist myself I get the technical ability put into it.

Art can be avant garde and only reach a small audience.

Wearable art to be worn and seen has to be designed to an audience for it to reach its intended goal. Clearly the artist can do that since everyone including me wants the Napoleon Sloth.
