every shirt on this site has to be explained to someone. that doesn't mean it's not "properly executed".
Leosageheartsaid 33 weeks ago
I completely agree with this. I get questions on my Flash Camera shirt. I look at them and just say "Think about it for a minute."

As for needing an explanation, why does it need one in the first place? Seriously. I don't like the "popular" shirts like Doctor Who and Star Wars. Don't buy them, never will. I don't care for them. I LIKE artsy shirts. Art doesn't need an explanation.

i think they are referring to the fact you don't have to be a fan of a specific show/movie to appreciate it.

I can point out that my BrBa t-shirt is BrBa and those that know the show will get it. Same with my Dexter shirt.
This one would be "Well, see, the kid has a smart phone, and he's got an app on it that's supposed to scare off bears." Too much.
Not that it's a bad gag...just not a great t-shirt.

anyway: great stuff, amazing illustration skills.
and WHO on EARTH explains his or her shirts to ANYONE?! srlsy ... did you ever do that, ever?! because I own a lot of weird shirts and never had to explain a single one to anybody. it works like that: people don't understand yr shirt, people think they're too stupid "to get it", therefore people feel too embarrassed to ask ... done

The concept is cool, too, but is also nice 'cause it can be left open for interpretation.
But I LOVE BEARS!!! This one just fell into my basket.
cubanpetesaid 33 weeks ago
A lot of the shirts on here I dont 'get' because they are niche things, like shirts relating to pubs/bars in films. Who remembers the name of the bar in some film (that was probably ok at best) apart from the anoraks who've watched it umpteen times. I hate to use the term 'nerds' but...
Shirts like the Flash camera are more popular culture because its er.. more popular. (im guessing it was Flash Gordon related. See? Pop-u-luar). Flash Gordon = timeless. Angry Birds = popular for a bit until the next game comes out. (In 3d probably). Its all so soul-less now. Flash Gordon will probably be remade soon. In 3D. Then turned into a trilogy (or more). Ker-ching! Then forgotten because it was smurf.

Sloth Bonaparte will be a shirt in the near future.
styggiesaid 33 weeks ago
Seriously guys, is that really so hard to say? Because if it takes more explaining than that, it's not the shirt's fault, it's the people you surround yourself with. Move on, don't buy the shirt, you won't have to explain it, the sky won't fall in.
Salamanderlich, love your style! Particularly love the way you drew Leo. I hope one day you'll do a hippo!

Explaining a reference someone might not get is not the same as explaining the overall concept of a design.
ianleinosaid 33 weeks ago
vengrosaid 33 weeks ago
But with that said, the illustration itself is very nice. I think if the application drawing was clearer then it wouldn't even need the explanation at all and would simply be a visual gag. It's hard to get "no bears" from the app picture.
SmoothVincesaid 33 weeks ago
While I love the design for it vibe and subtlety, it's indeed a bit of a shame that the center light source wasn't used to make the design more circular. Would've blended with the whole shirt real nicely.
mdbellatrixsaid 33 weeks ago
yah i agree! maybe as a poster but i dont think i would actually wear this. maybe its because it looks like you have a weird square on your chest. if the artist had made the picture fade out better i might consider it. and as always... I MISS THE DR WHO SHIRTS

Or you could just say "Its a bear scare app". It's that easy.
Don't hate on the artist because their proud of their concept. They are just trying to shed more light on their design because of the work they put into it.
Just because it may not be "convenient" for you to answer a question about a shirt you're wearing doesn't mean its a poor design. The best things aren't always in plain sight, sometimes you have to dig a little deeper. So get over it.

You should totally make a Shadow of the Colossus shirt! That game still captures me, no matter how many times I have played it.
I notice you like Kingdom Hearts as well. I have a heartless tattoo ;)

I agree. There is no way I would get "BearScare App" from the icon of a cute bear wearing an X-Men outfit.
But the image is pretty cute, in and of itself.

Yes, it's not immediately obvious to the uninitiated what this is all about but it is still a beautiful piece of artwork. I think I'd rather have it on the wall than on a shirt though but congrats on the print, you are clearly very talented. I look forward to seeing more from you.

I just think that the beauty of Teefury shirts is that your wearing an inside joke amongst a fan base that your theoretically a part of.
This shirt is like wearing a design that is an inside joke amongst one person. I am not hating the art. As an artist myself I get the technical ability put into it.
Art can be avant garde and only reach a small audience.
Wearable art to be worn and seen has to be designed to an audience for it to reach its intended goal. Clearly the artist can do that since everyone including me wants the Napoleon Sloth.
